  1. This newsletter represents the topics that were discussed at our recent SNT Meeting at Christ Church.
  2. This was discussed at the Dulwich Hill SNT on Monday evening. Police would like to be informed of all incidents to get a picture of the areas targeted. If they can build up a 'profile' it may be possible for unmarked cars/ and non uniformed officers to patrol those areas.
  3. Discussed last night - Burglaries and theft from motor vehicles. Long discussion with lady from the School Patrol (parents who volunteer to be around at local secondary schools to prevent phone thefts/mugging etc). Also the recent concerns re scam accidents mopeds/bikes crashing into cars etc. Barry Road/Silvester Rds. Barry/Goodrich, Langton Rise/Wood Vale. A couple of people attending had this happen to them/family. Suspicious behaviour of a make hiding behind bike containers in Pellatt Road/CPR who may be involved. Police need to be informed of all incidents and locations. If activities identified around certain roads, police may be able to employ under cover officers in unmarked vehicles. Meeting lasted around 75 mintes.
  4. SNT meetings are very flexible - we start off with various crime figures for the last 3 or so months. This is broken down into categories. which give rise to questions from the audience. People are encouraged to discuss items/situations/concerns with the police team. There is no written agenda- everyone can raise a concern etc. There is also an opportunity to talk privately to one of the police team. Items/concerns raised at previous meetings cover car theft, burglaries, anti social behaviour, general safety concerns, mobile phone thefts. unsafe driving including speeding etc. If you are a resident living in Dulwich Hill ward or have a business in the ward you are entitled to attend the meeting.
  5. i did my child observation at a nursery in Camberwell. That was many years ago- not sure how young a baby would have to be to have access to a nursery. I had to do 90 minutes weekly for 6 weeks and keep a diary which later I transformed into an essay. One of my highest marks at Uni= 90%.
  6. Growing up in the 1950/60s in ED. Our street was designated for slum clearance twice. Two families lived in the house, We were upstairs and although wired for light, not for power so could not have fridge or electric cooker. No bathroom just kitchen sink. Outside toilet shared with flat downstairs - we had to go through their sitting room to get to back door. Mould in rooms due to flat roof and blocked gutters. My Nan lived a bit further along in ED- solid house, gas heaters, kitchen had covered bath, corrugated plastic roof covered walkway to outside toilet. Mum and I managed to get a private rented flat in Forest Hill in the late 1960s, still shared a bathroom with 6 other people but at least it was indoors. The house we lived in ED is still standing - Southwark never went ahead with the slum clearance.
  7. if like me you do not have a mobile phone- you cannot take pictures of the scene. I would probably not give my insurance details over, but on returning home would notify both police and insurance company of this scam.
  8. Yesterday driving down LL into Grove Vale on our way to Sainsburys, going slowly as a bus was about to depart from the Elsie Road bus stop when a young child on bike dashed across the road from Elsie Road to Kwik Fit. Child was about 3 or 4 riding a bike without pedals. Fortunately there was a gap in the traffic otherwise the child would have been killed. Noticed an adult (father?) on bike looking to do a right turn from Elsie Road- not sure whether he had anticipated crossing with the child by his side and that the child took it upon themselves to charge across the road. I am all for children learning how to be safe on the road but that struck me as irresponsible. I would have got off my bike and wheeled it on the pavement to the traffic lights outside the school so both of them could cross safely. It was around 3.30 pm with all the school traffic etc, Our 10 year old grandchild has recently graduated to a larger bike as her mother wishes her to cycle to secondary school eventually as where she lives in Durrington Sussex there very few bus routes to secondary schools. She rides on the pavements alone 'round the block' to give her confidence but her area is residential with light traffic and no shops, a far cry from London streets/traffic.
  9. This. Young children cycling on pavements cannot be expected to be aware and mindful of pedestrians so their parents should be vigilant on their behalf. I agree that children need to use pavements for safety reasons and it is up to the parents to ensure that the children are made aware of other folk around them. Children need to cycle in front of the adults so that adult can spot any impending 'danger' .
  10. Postman spotted in Barry Road this morning, nothing for us, but not seen this postie before. We had a regular guy for some months but have not seen him around, possible different route?
  11. As everyone has stated, Josephs might be expensive but in terms of sizing and quality, never had a bad meal from them. In fact they are so generous with their food that we order 2 fish and one portion of chips as servings are very large. Ordered food from them last week and got usual good quality stuff.

  13. With so many young children now riding bikes on the pavement, it is imperative that their parents/carers teach them to be aware of pedestrians as well. Spotted today in LL - mother ahead with phone in hand - youngsters on bikes several yards behind and people trying to move aside. On child was about 3 years old and riding bike without pedals. Having been out with our 10 year old grandchild over weekend with her new bike - we were more aware of the numbers of children riding about in area, some having little regard to other pavement users.
  14. This scam was mentioned in the I paper last week- it is all over the country. Police recommend that anyone affected immediately notify your insurance agencies. Also attend your local Police SNT meetings or Cuppa with a Copper informal sessions and report these incidents.
  15. About 8 letters and small parcel arrived yesterday. Bank statements were a week late.
  16. Years ago I was advised to book for Tai Chi at the leisure centre under their Silver user criteria. Was nor able to do it on line so went in person, they tried doing it on line but informed me that all spaces were filled. Turned out that as the participants came out of the class, they booked the next session on line using their phones before even exiting the centre. This meant potential new members never got a chance
  17. if you are a legitimate collector you are obliged to wear an ID badge with the organisation/charity's details on and if my memory serves me correctly- the police need to be informed. Recall some years ago there was a local charity collection in ED and the organiser had to inform the police of dates/.areas etc and show some form of authorisation.
  18. In Barry Road, it is not only the poor pavements and puddles, it is the dangerous tree roots which are hazards to buggies, wheelchairs/mobility scooters and pedestrians in general. My neighbour uses a mobility scooter and finds it difficult to negotiate the hump and uneven surface of the tree roots by the Plough PH (Barry Road side). I use a walking stick and some times a 3 wheel walking frame, and have the same problem balancing. A friend earlier in the year tripped over the tree roots of the tree outside St Anthony's School (Barry Road side) and laid there until someone could come t o her assistance. I would hate a treeless street but at times the council need to consider the needs of all residents. Although I am a car owner, I would not dream of parking in Lordship Lane etc - it is far easier to go by bus.
  19. Meeting will be held in the Church area of Christ Church in Barry Road. 6.30 pm start. If you are concerned about crime, unsocial behaviour or scams etc in the area, please come along.
  20. Hubby got fed up getting messages telling him that he had failed to attend - on checking it was a mistake as he had not booked in for a session anyway. With all the tech problems he cancelled his membership. Even though he has to pay more per swim, he goes to Forest Hill Pool where he can book in person at the time most convenient for him.
  21. I do not know of any Pet Plan that covers the above. Ours covers illness/surgery/death and loss. Try ringing PDSA for advice or Cat Protection.
  22. Have used this company for years in connection with our community centre and residents' association. Efficient and reasonable price. They also did the invitation cards for our silver wedding party.
  23. I go to Adam's Hair in Dartmouth Road Forest Hill (opposite swimming pool), Had lowlights cut and blow dry for £75 a couple of weeks ago. Last time I had this done was £65,
  24. Just had Niko around to fix some leaky taps. As always very reasonable re costs. Came around initially to check the problem and came back a couple of hours later with required replacements parts. All fixed in less than an hour. Prefers to be paid via cash.
