  1. East Dulwich Community Centre - see their website
  2. The Elms Care Home in Barry Road are having problems with motorists parking too close to, and slightly over their dropped kerb making it difficult for ambulances to access the building. They put a friendly note a offending car a little while ago asking for a little consideration, the note was removed but the vehicle remained.
  3. Why not mention this to the senior librarian - perhaps they will have a designated section for buggies etc. Or if you child is not sleeping, prams/buggies need to be folded. Buggies etc were a problem in the Bread of Life Caf? (Christ Church) so they had a separate area set aside for the prams.

  5. Although not a labour supporter, I knew Tessa well as we appeared at various community events. I even had to share a platform with her for some question and answer event. I remember that well as I was in old casual clothes and was part of the audience when she spotted me and called me up. very embarrassing. Tessa was good at remembering people's names, I spotted her at Dulwich Hospital one day cutting a birthday cake on the ward ( I was on the ward in connection with my work) she called me over and introduced me to the birthday person, I think I went up a notch with the nursing staff that day,! She was also very involved with Christ Church Barry Road.
  6. When we had dogs, apart from the designated dog walk area, we could let the dogs off the lead only on what was known as the cricket field. ( Right hand big field from Court Lane gate) everywhere else was on leads. Mind you that was some years ago. The problem I have is those dogs on extendable leads, some owners seem to walk about 10 feet behind especially in crowded area. I feel they are a trip hazard especially for children and those who are not nimble on their feet
  7. Went in there yesterday to get a take away sandwich - no menu on outside and managed to squeeze in the shop (several people waiting for service) all I could see was bacon sandwich ?3.90 all the other sandwiches were ?5.90 What was in the I could not see as writing too small to determine from the distance I was from the board. Friends also went on launch day and said they were very busy and some orders got muddled up.
  8. I worked some years ago with a homeless man who was admitted to hospital but had nowhere to rehabilitate. He was placed as a temporary resident in a local care home as it was the middle of winter and since he was in his 70/80s it was the only solution available at the time. Even though he knew I was contacting various agencies (St Mungo etc)to find him a hostel place, he decided that after a few days regaining his strength and having 3 meals a day, he preferred to live on the streets. An outreach team agreed to keep an eye on him.
  9. The new Hari's Kitchen is now open. Friends recently went there and found cost of food quite expensive but good choice. Mug of tea ?1.50 (Bread of Life caf? ?1).
  10. Why not test out the councillors knowledge etc and their willingness to local residents.
  11. James so shocked that you were not re elected - the ward boundaries changes have cost us dear. For those of us who know you personally - I hope you will still be around in ED. Always welcomed in our house.
  12. I think people had to resort to Sainsburys' to get bread, we did (reluctantly). If Badgers could have guaranteed an adequate supply of fresh bread daily, we would have continued to shop there. They made lovely bread pudding from leftover loaves.
  13. We used to be regular customers at Badgers for many years but noticed that when they branched out to selling meals, they stocked less and less bakery products especially bread. Hubby would go in early morning to find all sold out of bread, other times he was given a loaf free as it was left over from the day before and they were not allowed to sell it. One server admitted that they rarely had more than 10 or 12 loaves each day and this included bread which they used for sandwiches. Food was good - friends who used the Bread of Life Caf? in Christ Church, used to go to Badgers at the weekend for meals when BoL were closed.
  14. From what I can gather, the company that originally ran the Harvester are still paying rent for the premises. That Dulwich Estates want to build flats on the site as they wish to get the income from developer. Dulwich Estates are not interested in low money making schemes!
  15. It does depend on what exams she wants/needs to take. Kingsdale always had a good reputation for music. Sydenham Girls school originally had a good reputation for Art and Drama (not sure what their speciality is now).
  16. Many of my granddaughter's friends in a state primary school applied for an were accepted at private and independent secondary schools, all of which required them to sit entrance exams. One friend left Newstead Woods school after achieving 12 GCSEs and transferred to a state secondary school as Newstead did not offer the A levels she required for university.
  17. You may have been informed of your lack of entitlement to Child Benefit by the DWP by letter, so this could be useful to present.
  18. Daughter in Worthing goes to a specialist Children's hair dresser - they have rockets/cars etc to sit the kids in. Pays ?10 for each child (2 and 4) say it is more expensive than local hairdresser who charges around ?6 but the extra is worth it as kids tend to sit quietly and do not moan/cry etc.
  19. Look up in the 'Which' magazines - they regularly test kettles for noise. We have a Phillips - a little noisy but not too bad.
  20. Having Auburn hair, my eldest daughter, when at university dyed her hair black, it did not suit her, went to a hair dresser to get the dye out some time later. Hair never returned to the beautiful auburn colour and went and stayed at non descript brown. Her daughter, a strawberry blond, did the same but did not use a permanent dye, so her hair returned to a pale ginger colour - she now uses mainly red semi permanent dyes of different shades. Youngest daughter with very dark brown hair had no desire throughout her teenage and university years to change colouring. Now a mum of 2 is currently red, previously aubergine. I suggest highlights or low lights as a compromise for a full head colouring. Ward of warning - schools can come down heavily on changes in hair colouring.
  21. I am afraid it is not as easy as you think, GPs have catchment areas and if you are outside these areas you will not be permitted to join that surgery. Many years ago our family were not happy with the surgery we were registered with. ( I had been with the same GP surgery for most of my life but when the senior partner died suddenly the practice went downhill) We eventually registered with The Gardens. However, their catchment area has now changed and our road is outside the area, whilst we can still use the surgery, a relative who moved in in December has to go to another practice.
  22. Whilst I have no problems with boards etc on businesses own 'land' it is sometimes difficult to tell which is 'public pavement' and which is 'business' . Some shops you can see this clearly as the composition of the pavement is different. I vaguely remember something on the forum last year which states that permission has to be sought from the council as to the number of chairs and tables permitted outside establishments and that a charge is made by the council per table/chair. Cam anyone else remember this or is it a figment of my imagination? Especially at weekends when more people are about, I think businesses need to rethink where their boards are placed. Having pushed a wheelchair in LL at weekend, avoiding boards, broken pavements, tree stumps etc as well has people with prams stopping to chat mid pavement, can be a nightmare. You must also think of those who are visually impaired and boards may constitute a trip[ hazard.
  23. We have had cats for many years, all but 2 have been 'rehomed'. 2 were because new private landlord did not allow pets and family were also on the 3 rd floor of converted house. 1 was due to a relationship breakdown, 1 was due to the death of it's elderly owner (he had arranged with us before his death that we would take her). Another cat was rescued from an abusive owner by a friend, but did not get on with her other cats so asked us to take her. We currently have 3 female cats. All use the cat flap and rarely go further than 2 houses each side and the houses adjoining the back of house. Many people will take on a cat from the Forum if the owner needs genuinely to rehome.
  24. Some schools will not allow a day off for family funerals - our grandson had to go 'sick' in order to attend his great grandfather's funeral in Sussex.
  25. Just been informed that table Tennis can be played between 12.30 and 2 pm on a Thursday
