  1. TFL wishes to change the bus stand outside Christ Church which is operational from 11pm - 8 am to a 24/7 bus stand making this the 4th bus stand in the area (LL/Friern/Friern/Etherow Street) There was never any incorrect signage it was always meant to be night time only to reduce the number of buses standing in Etherow Street at night. Please read below;- Thank you for your email. The Barry Road bus stand was sited at this location with the intention of being used as a normal bus standing point, during the day and night. Unfortunately, we have until now been unable to use the stand in the manner for which it was intended as the signage installed at this stand incorrectly advised that it would be in use from 23:00 to 08:00 only. As cars, vans and other vehicles began to use the stand, it was not possible for us to have the clearway enforced since the sign advertising the stand?s hours of operation was incorrect. While the incorrect sign remained in place LB Southwark parking enforcement officers have been unable to enforce the stand if they found vehicles parking within our operation times. This effectively prevented buses from using the stand outside the hours shown on the sign since the stand was regularly blocked by parked vehicles. The new signage that we are looking to place here is aimed to correct this historic error. It will enable the parking restrictions to be enforced and allow the stand to be used as it was originally intended. While we do appreciate the comments of groups who have, until now, used this space to park, this site was and is intended as a bus stand and our agreement with LB Southwark to site the stand here was based on the understanding it would be in use at all times. Over the last 12 to 18 months, as development work has continued at an unprecedented level across the Capital, our available bus standing space has been severely impacted, as older stands have been removed or made unavailable for prolonged periods of time. We have had to route buses to other nearby locations, which has increased the pressure on our remaining operational bus stands. It is important to note that by using the Barry Road bus stand at its intended capacity, we will be able to accommodate more vehicles in the area, reducing unnecessary diversions and ultimately maintain a more reliable bus network. This is of undoubted benefit to bus passengers. I appreciate the concerns over the road width at Barry Road. However, I can assure Caroline that as with all our bus stands, this location was inspected thoroughly by both ourselves along with representatives from LB Southwark and the police to ensure that the area was suitable. Provided that the stand is used appropriately we are unaware of any issues with its use. If the constituent, or any residents do observe an issue, we?d be very grateful for the full details (including date, time of day and registration number of any buses involved) so we can raise it with the relevant operator. With regards to welfare facilities available to drivers; I can confirm that what is referred to as a portaloo at Friern Road is a permanent, robust toilet unit with running water and electricity that is connected to the public sewer. It has been in situ at the Friern Road bus stand for more than six years and is cleaned daily by our cleaning contractor. We also have dedicated maintenance contractors to attend to electrical and plumbing faults. I have made our maintenance team aware of the concerns raised by Ms xxxx and they will visit the facilities to ensure they are up to the required standard. Regarding the concerns raised about the traffic signals at the junction of Barry Road and Lordship Lane; I can confirm that we have checked the operation of the signals and found them to be working as expected without any faults. However, we are aware that at times it can become very busy with high traffic flows on opposite approaches to the junction, in addition to heavy pedestrian flows. In October 2015, to help balance the needs of all road users we installed our intelligent signal technology SCOOT at this junction, which uses detectors in the road to allow signal timings to adapt automatically in response to traffic conditions in real-time. During the implementation of the SCOOT system, our engineers monitored the performance of the traffic signals and observed that the timings were configured appropriately in order to reduce delays as effectively as possible. However, once the school half term is finished and traffic levels have returned to normal levels, we will revisit this location to ensure that the right balance is being achieved and investigate the potential to further alleviate the congestion that Ms xxxx highlights. I hope this is helpful. Kind regards Andrew Hatch Communications & Engagement Managing Director's Office
  2. Many people 'volunteering' in charity shops are doing 'Community Service' following a court appearance - some who have poor 'customer service skills'. Although this does not make up for the rudeness to others. I would have just confessed my mistake and saying I was having a senior moment if I was serving and apologise. Hubby volunteers in a charity shop and is incensed when people try to haggle with him wanting a ?2 item of clothing for 10p - tells them all the money goes to the charity and if they wanted something that cheap he suggests that they look around for jumble sales. At the same time he laughs at the things people donate - out of date packets of food, worn pants and bras, dirty kitchen utensils, packets of tampex (unopened)
  3. My eldest daughter was 13 when her sister was born. Was very excited at being a big sister and would occasionally baby sit for us ( we paid her and did not do it regularly). She loved taking sister out to see all the Disney Films as an excuse for seeing them herself. Little sister cried and very upset when the older one went to Uni. They are now 43 and 30 living in Orpington and Worthing with their partners and text and email each other regularly and meeting up during school holidays. The eldest has 2 children 17 and 12 who although argue etc are very protective of each other - the 12 year old boy loves cooking omelettes for his sister. The younger one has a 2.5 year old and 9 month year old time will tell on this age gap
  4. Where about are you living?
  5. Most of the GP practices have catchment areas and are strictly keeping to these.
  6. It was last night - family stayed with us last night as had to get to Heathrow by public transport very early this morning. They have checked their car and all bags and feel the passport may have fallen out when unloading the car. We were all up at 4 am searching for it. They even drove back home to Kent to check their house and ended up paying ?60 for a cab to the airport. Both hubby and I checked the drive, and I checked all the bins. Son in law is still in England - rest of family are in their hotel in Berlin hoping that the passport be found and he can join them.
  7. My son in law has lost his passport. May have dropped out of his pocket/bag in Barry Road - Plough Pub end. British passport. He parked his car in our drive but nothing found. He was due to travel to Berlin today with the rest of his family - they are now in Germany and he is hoping if passport found to be able to get a flight today of tomorrow.
  8. I refer to previous entry re stealing on goods All the charity shops usually have notices asking people not to leave items outside the shop but to bring them in when shop is open. Since most charity shops are open weekends as well as weekdays there should be no excuse not to deliver during opening hours. A relative who volunteers in a charity shop tells me that they receive soiled and torn clothing, broken toys, china etc - and they have to dispose of these items themselves. So please when you donate to a charity shop make sure that the goods are clean and in reasonable condition and not left outside a closed shop where they can be 'stolen' or ripped to pieces by foxes.
  9. 3 of us went to Reyna Turkish Restaurant in New Cross on Saturday we all had starters, main and dessert plus soft drinks. Bill was a few pence over ?60.
  10. TFL have written to some local residents stating that from 20th November, they propose to change the 'night bus stand' - it operates from 11 pm - 8 am outside Barry House and Christ Church to a 24 hour stand. This means that disabled people using their cars to get to Christ Church, Fair Trade Centre and Bread of Life Caf? - will no longer be able to use cars. TFLs reasoning is that the crews need to use the welfare facilities which were installed in Barry Road when the bus stand was put in place. There are no 'welfare facilities' for bus crews in Barry Road. There is a portaloo at the Friern Road stand which serves the stands in LL/Friern, Friern and Etherow Street. Bus drivers use the Plough Pub, Christ Church, the Library and Barry House. Neither of these premises are obliged to allow crews to use their loos as they are not customers or visiting the premises as part of their daily business. If this stand goes ahead - will mean that the square of LL/Friern/Etherow/Barry will effectively become a large parking lot with additional fumes and noise pollution. Increased traffic as witnessed yesterday 2 buses waiting for lights changing in the stand area, another bus on the bend of the road, effectively blocked the road and a 197 turning from LL could not get through as insufficient space - the traffic was down to Goodrich Road. If you wish to object to this idea please email [email protected] with heading Barry Road Bus stand by 6th November. Those parents who drive to St. Anthony's school will be affected as will users of Christ Church and St.Thomas More churches
  11. My mum used to keep a plastic tea set, picture colouring books and pencils, glitter and glue which came out regularly when her great grand daughter came to stay.
  12. Setting the table for meals with cutlery. Wiping down table with damp cloth, putting recycled items in the appropriate bin/bag/whatever. Washing up (standing on chair or stool washing up unbreakable items) Helping to make sandwiches i.e. buttering bread. One of my daughters loved using the hoover ( she soon grew out of this when became a teenager)
  13. The original ground floor was for a new Grove Vale Libary
  14. 1st test when I was about 20 - Norwood Test centre - 3 blokes got in the car - examiner was being tested. Failed test, Retook it several weeks later in Hither Green- showed the examiner the paper showing why I had failed, he was very surprised and stated that nobody failed on those points. Told him about my extra passengers - he agreed that previous examiner wanted to appear strict in front of his own examiners. We did the parts where I had failed on, an emergency stop, a few questions re Highway Code ( well in was early 1970s) - whole test took 15 minutes compared with over 30 minutes of previous. Passed.
  15. The Council can order shops to keep their forecourts in good order - but obviously need to have ideas from local residents/visitors of the problem. Remember some years ago that following a number of complaints, Southwark council ordered a row of shop keepers to repair their forecourts or council would do it for them and charge. The shop keepers/owners failed to follow this through and Southwark did as threaten and charged for the work. Since then, those shop keepers have been more careful.
  16. I watch it as I like to see those who have no common sense. They are too far up their own a**e to understand how pathetic they come across. Thank god my kids feel job satisfaction is far more important than making loads of money
  17. Both of my girls went there many years ago and went on to university to study. Good standard of education
  18. Cords are cool! Love a man in a pair of good fitting cords - fortunately my husband likes them as well. Go the whole hog and get a matching corduroy jacket as well.
  19. My granddaughter was 23 months old when her baby brother was born. Was the first to hold him after Mum and Dad and was fascinated by his daily routines and wanted to help. He is now 8 months old and a little bit of jealousy is apparent at times but on the whole - she is his 'slave'
  20. I am retiring next month - 6 years after reaching state pension age. If it was not for my arthritis which affects my walking and standing ( which are part of my job) I would stay on as I love my work. Every week my boss asks me if I had changed my mind and wants me to stay, I have compromised and stated that I will join a professional agency and if the team needed short term or part time workers I would come back as a temp. However I have already signed up for a short term university course which will allow me to branch into the more academic and teaching side of my profession which will keep my mind active.
  21. if your will is not complicated you can get a Will Form from WH Smiths/Stationers and do it yourself and get 2 independent witnesses
  22. The Gardens have a very defined area - if you look on their web page you will see the boundaries. DMC in Chadwick Road seems efficient
  23. All depends whether you are going via Bromley Town Centre and up Bromley Common Road. Also are you driving from Peckham via Sydenham to Beckenham, or going up the Bromley Road. I drive from Dulwich to Orpington (the station end) regularly and out of rush hour takes me 45 minutes. Around midnight it takes 20 - 25 minutes. I would allow a good hour plus.
  24. My PCN was from Southwark
