  1. indeed, germany were awesome, and more to the point were joyful, something that's been lacking in this tournament. Why anyone wouldn't wish germany to win the whole thing is betond me, unless one fo the teams really pulls it out of the bag tonight. Holland have occasionally amazed, but have been too cynical. Argentina have been too cautious and relied on a couple of players, but it would be nice to see Messi get in the hall of greats on this stage I guess.
  2. it was surreal, Brazil had been unimpressive, but they were just awful, after the first goal they just seemed to run around randomly, i've never seen anything like it outside of a school match.
  3. read an article that, rather stating the obvious, moore's law doesn't apply to batteries. So we have a choice of functionality and speed versus life. in reality we'll just be surrounded by more wireless, solar, cycling, walking sources of charging in a desperate bid to squeeze a few more seconds of life.
  4. A misunderstanding is cleared up. Hardly the worst thing that's happened on the EDF.
  5. Daver, indeed as far as anyone knows it's just Cyril but there have been hints recently that it goes a bit deeper and there were others who either knew or helped facilitate. But rumours are often baseless so we'll just have to wait for any more detail. For the record I doubt public school would have any greater correlation to sexual abuse except insofar as grooming people for positions of power means you'll end up with more people in positions of power, with concomitant opportunities for its abuse in one form or another. We might as well say that public school causes expense fiddling :-)
  6. if you can say 'sod's law' chances are its ironic.
  7. I'm sure that song has been unfairly maligned, though some of them were defintely annoying rather than ironic.
  8. it was nothing to do with the debate, just an aside regards first mates pondering that if westminster was found to be a hotbed of sexual abuse in the past, might that have some connection to the fact that almost all of them came through the public school system. It didn't seem an entirely unreasonable hypothesis. You then had a go at him for homophobia and equating homosexuality with paedohpilia, neither of which did he do, you just misunderstood the word fag. At no time did you say 'oh yeah whoops my bad'. I just thought you'd given the chap an unwarranted bashing.
  9. xpost, as usual people saying things more succinctly than i do!!!!
  10. Thinking about it the fag system is practically an archetypal pederastic one, as done by the ancient greeks. Using homoerotic means he was (or may have been, i'm sure he can speak for himself) specifically talking about the fag system where a sexual and or emotional involvement was the norm (and they most certainly existed) as opposed to maybe one of physical abuse or the pseudo militaristic batman/personal aide flavour of the system. Anyway, what Jeremy said, it wouldn't be the first time you were unaware of the synonymous nature of a word that can be used as a homophobic term.
  11. this has been the stock-in-trade gimmick of near future sci-fi for about 50 years. Such things are an inevitablilty I'm afraid. It will eventually be less shit than google glass of course.
  12. 'fag' is something different in public schools. somewhere between batman, slave and bullying target, which in some cases can involve sexual abuse. The connection is perfectly valid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fagging
  13. it'd help stop me calling everyone mate and luv for starters!!
  14. wow, that's the last time i share anything on facebook. I may have wiped out the chicken industry with yesterday's post!! xpost rosie!!
  15. shes improved hugely, but then Talk Shows arent a great launch pad for public adoration, unless you're Jerry Springer. I think the timbre of her voice is inherently annoying, that might account for much of it too. back to rolf and his art (or glitters' etc) http://www.independent.ie/opinion/columnists/ruth-dudley-edwards/why-there-are-no-winners-in-the-squalid-saga-of-rolf-harris-30408989.html
  16. that was non-sequitur i agree, given its a drum hes often banged i guess he was just using the world cup as a useful focus. Stike while the irons (or lack of three of them) etc
  17. I'll admit to undertanding about 20% of this article, but it was an interestinhg viewpoint and i enjoyed comments such as "The main advantage of component systems is that the dealer can sell ridiculously expensive cables, hand-knitted by Peruvian virgins and soaked in snake oil, to connect it all up. That some of these are supplied with arrows denoting the direction of signal flow defies description. Fortunately, the electrons can?t see the markings and behave normally." or "Despite [omni-directional speakers'] clear advantages, they remain uncommon because when time accuracy is needed and high frequencies are to be radiated all around, internal computing and equalisation is necessary and carpenters don?t know how to do that." http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/07/02/feature_the_future_loudspeaker_design/
  18. is it because they've mostly OKed the selling off of school playing fields? Past politics aside it seems worthy to get some investment to replace these lost resources and the premiership's filthy lucre is as good a starting point as any surely?
  19. "In the wake of England's early World Cup exit David Crausby MP has relaunched a campaign to save grassroots football. The petition was originally started in 2013 to force the Premier League to put more of their ?5 billion TV revenue into the children's grassroots game, with Crausby calling for 7.5 per cent of that money to be ring-fenced for the cause. Crausby said: "I want all children to have the chance to play football in a safe and organised environment with good quality pitches. Money pours into the very top of the sport, the Premier League, and it's time that was reinvested into opening up the sport to everyone." " http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/66835
  20. From a paper that staged photos for a story, trial by media is one thing, trial by mirra ...
  21. Bah, pointless debate.
  22. Great nil nil
  23. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/chippy it's old!
  24. B&B?
  25. see also beeb impartiality, by failing to please all people you will inevitably annoy lots of people. headliner == established so already annoyed youth (unless ironic appreciation of ancient stalwart) music taste != myMusicTaste == piss of everybody else. the answer is obviously to just bloody well go to the conert of the band you like or a festival that caters for your taste. Green Man has an excellent line-up this year and hammerfest a terrible one...seewadidithere?
