  1. This from phobias-help.com: One possible theory regarding the prevalence of clown phobia is as follows: Because clowns have permanent exaggerated expressions painted on their faces ? usually of joy, but sometimes of sadness, it renders the observer impotent in measuring facial expression as a precursor of action. Therefore, those who are mindful of their environment, possibly due to past traumatic events, are unable to interpret and accordingly predict what this strange creature may do to them. This fear is heightened when we observe the ?happy clown? performing some aggressive behaviour, tripping someone or spraying water from an innocuous looking flower in the lapel. It becomes too much to cope with and causes tremendous confusion and fear.
  2. Unchastened, I too was going to suggest the Withnail game, though I have always understood it to be more of a "consuming" game, rather than just a drinking game. Does take a bit of organising, but more fun I think. (Don't forget the tea and cake ordered from Miss Blennerhassett, and Green & Blue would be only to happy to source you the finest wines available to humanity). HB - there are many uses for lighter fluid: removing rust, getting gum out of hair, removing crayon marks, taking out cooking oil stains from clothes....the list is endless. Such ignorance can only mean you have forgotten to renew your subscription to Readers Digest, the bible of such handy hints. Let that be a lesson to you.
  3. With a finale of Iron Maiden's "die with your boots on".
  4. Book a private room in one of those karaoke type bars where they bring you drinks all night and get drunk enough to think it's a good plan to sing "the boys are back in town" loudly in public?
  5. You might want to suggest that you will be expecting interest to be paid as well if they don't get it back to you within the recommended time, plus your expenses for taking legal advice on the position, plus a posting on this forum that recommends others stay away from using their services in future....... Sadly I find all too often that until unpleasant threats are made, no one deals with a complaint properly. Shame, but that's my experience.
  6. There is a woman on Northcross road market on Saturday who sells Shea Butter - nothing else just that, on a very little stall. It is a pure natural product with nothing added. It worked absolute wonders on my 2 year olds dry cracked sore skin, so it might be worth a try? Other friends have told me that it has helped them or their children with minor skin issues too. Isn't motherhood just so glamorous!
  7. You could try whippersnappers music at Brockwell Lido - noisy boisterous music class with a puppet show, dressing up disco and african drumming. My very noisy two year old boy is in love with the thursday morning teacher! They have a website for more details.
  8. Both of mine love whippersnappers at Brockwell Lido. Dont have contact details to hand but you can google them, they have a website.
  9. Twinmum - maybe the sofa is the answer? My daughter refused to go up to her bed to sleep from about 2.5, but she still snoozes most days on the sofa at about 2.30 (she is nearly 4!). I would get her some milk, a blanket, a fav teddy, and cuddle up with her to settle her down and she'd soon drop off. I think the idea of going up to bed and "missing out" used to really annoy her, whereas the sofa is near me and her toys and doesn't feel like she has to stop what she is doing to go to bed. Might be worth persisting since she has taken to the sofa of her own choice?
  10. Only women bleed - Alice Cooper
  11. You can't blame a girl for trying ;-)
  12. Here you go: http://www.bunnyclock.com/ Good luck!
  13. There is an alarm clock (I think jojomamanbebe sell it, but if not you will find it on the internet) in the shape of a rabbit's head. When you press the button down the rabbits ears go down and it shuts its eyes. You set the alarm for, say, 7am, at which time the rabbits eyes pop open. You could get him the clock and tell him that he has to stay in his bedroom until the bunny opens his eyes, and if he does, he can have a [insert fav treat eg chocolate buttons - something small and cheap but tempting). If he doesn't you will take away his [insert fav toy] for the day. I know some will disagree with bribery, but desperate times........
  14. This exact same point arose with me in my last job (I am a lawyer, though not an employment law expert). My understanding is that the company cannot unilaterally change your contract. You were employed on the basis of your original contract, which stands unless you both agree to alter it. If you notify your boss that you are not happy to accept the new terms then you are not deemed to have accepted them just because you carry on working. With my company I raised the point, and in the end they moved me onto the new contract except in relation to the old maternity provisions, which stayed the same. Only those women who specifically asked for this exception got it, the others moved on to completely new terms. The company may not mind making this sort of exception for a few employees, they will still have most employees plus any new ones on the standard contract. I would raise the point with your boss and stand your ground. They aren't able to force you into it very easily.
  15. Glad it worked! If she likes dipping toast in sauces you could also try humous and guacamole?
  16. If you are a big fan of Alsace then we have three wine tastings specifically about that region coming up in August on 5th 12th and 19th. I think some tickets are still available - more details on our website: www.greenandbluewines.com/index.php/Tastings
  17. How about making your own pizzas? I cook up onions, courgette, peppers, carrots - whatever is in the fridge with a tin of tomatos and liquidise it all together. You can then use this sauce as the base and add other toppings she likes - make faces or pictures on the pizza to get her to join in. If you don't have time to make your own dough then sainsburys do an Annabel Carmel kids pizza which is free of rubbish, and in the shape of a teddybear. Again, add your own toppings to make the teddy face. You could even just use a muffin as the base if she'll eat those. If the weather turns nice (!) you could make your own ice lollies - just mix together fruit juice and water. Again I think there are some fairly cheap ice lolly moulds in sainsburys. To get fruit down my fussy ones I used to make fruit crumbles and smother them in custard - a dish known as "cakeyandcustard" by the kids which is fine by me if they eat it!
  18. I am pretty sure it is the case that you can't claim job seekers allowance if you have a redundancy payment or savings above a specific amount. I can't remember what the amount is but it is around ?16,000 I think. I would say this, being a risk averse lawyer, but lying about your savings or redundancy payment probably isn't a good idea. It is very easy indeed to check up on you, and you'll find it much harder to get a job with a criminal record for fraud! Take a look at direct.gov.co.uk for more information - there are several types of help available and several different thresholds for payments so its worth looking into a bit more.
  19. It might be worth taking the dog to a vet - they could scan the dog and see if it is microchipped. They are a very popular breed, do you have more of a description? Male/female, colour, etc?
  20. Hello Bozza - thanks very much for your post, some very interesting suggestions and I'll pass your comments on to the owners. Price is always tricky when you are trying to provide something niche or more unusual, and I can appreciate that ?16 isn't an amount you'd spend on everyday wine. If you look at our website, we do have more than 20 wines at ?10 or less which is slightly above the amount you have mentioned, but not much. It might mean trying a few things that you may not normally go for, but that might be fun too? We do also have some interesting beers and some very delicious cider that might be worth a look - lots more booze for your money! In the meantime we are always thinking of ways to provide delicious wine at a more affordable price so we'll certainly look at what you've said. If you PM me with your email address I'll make sure you are on our mailing list - not sure what has gone wrong there!
  21. annaj - delighted to hear that your trip to G&B was so successful, and just as importantly, I hope you enjoyed the wine. Keep the feedback coming, we know we can always improve!
  22. Quite right BN5 and it's not as if we don't already have pets.....I too am asthmatic (though not with cats) so am sympathetic to his pleas not to inflict moggy on the household. I shall think about it! TaraC thanks for all the advice, I'll get back to you if we decide to give it a go.
  23. PR - yes it is actually allowable to smash the windows. Cruely to animals is a criminal offence. In this country you are allowed to use "reasonable force in the prevention of a crime". I'd say smashing a window came under that category. I was at Hampton Court flower show last year when the RHS announced over the tannoy that someone had left their dog in a hot car in the car park and if they didn't come and get it the RHS would smash the window. So I figure if the RHS are allowed then so are we!!
  24. Thanks DD that's really interesting and perhaps a more likely solution that the ?4,000 kitten, which my husband seemed to find rather pricey. SO unreasonable! We do know for certain that it is cats he is allergic to (and horses actually but I won't be keeping one of those in my small back garden...) so that product may be worth a go. TarahC if we got one from you and the product didn't work would you take the cat back? Husband really does get very bad asthma so we just couldn't keep it if he stayed allergic. Also I have two chickens a dog and two children so we might need quite a brave but mellow cat. Is there such a thing?!
  25. Thanks for all the advice. I wish it was just a bit of sneezing, because he'd probably put up with that, but he actually gets very bad asthma......might have to wait and see whether the very expensive american allergy free cat ends up cheaper and over here!
