Man collecting for breast cancer charity - Copleston Road area
reeko replied to R&A's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It may not be a scam, some reputable charities do collect from door to door. I actually became a supporter of a charity through a door step approach from a collector who was very knowledgeable and passionate about the charity. I became a supporter in part because I was so impressed by him. The danger is in getting agents in to work on commission - either chuggers or door-steppers. There must be a huge temptation for these people to use unapproved tactics to collect funds. If they have offical garb on it is likely that they are official collectors, they are just over stepping the mark somewhat. Again - please contact breast cancer campaign if you are concerned over their activities -

Yes breast cancer survival rates have increased massively. Most women survive five years or more. This is largely down to research into better screening and treatments. The breast cancer community have also been excellent at collaborating and sharing data. They get together every five years or so and collate all their data from clinical trials (a meta analysis), so they can have a much greater degree of certainly about the benefits of any interventions. Research works and should be supported, but all charities need to do this responsibly -

Ummmmm - I appreciate that all charities need to chase their income pretty hard these days, but they need to ensure that any agents working on their behalf do not misprepresent facts. If the fundraiser was referring to olaparib, this is currently only available to patients on trials, as its effectiveness has not yet been proven. Also any charity worth their salt will have on-line donation (Breast Cancer Campaign does) - it is by far the cheapest way to collect monies, and also provides an opportunity to expose people to more information about what the charity does. I recommend that you contact Breast Cancer Campaign, they are a reputable charity and I am sure they would not want fundraising of this type in their name. Kicking off by asking do you know anyone who has died of breast cancer is just not on. http://www.breastcancercampaign.org/contact-us -

I think he will have been referring to olaparib. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olaparib It is an experimental therapy, with potential for breast and ovarian cancer for women with a particular mutation. I think this is very likley to be a scam. I work for a cancer charity that had a hand in developing drugs of this type and it would be very unlikley that we would want to fundraise in this way. If anyone gets more details about what organistion this person is saying they are from can you let me know. If this is a registered fundraiser they are operating well outside their brief and should be stopped. Thanks -
Hey Otta, that was EXACTLY what that thread needed - someone chipping in with "I told you so" - completely raised the tone of the whole debacle.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
reeko replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't see that at all e-dealer. He is trying to prevent you from cluttering up this thread, which myself and many others find very useful, with your constant sniping. As he said, you are free to start another thread critiscising him to the hilt, leaving this space free for people who actually want to engage with their councillor instead of taking pot-shots. As I don't want to follow your bad example and clutter this space up even more I won't post again on this topic here. -

Touche, Mr Barber, Touche. -
Yes Waitrose will open up, respond to all sorts of requests from the local community, win everyone round - even those who cherished Iceland, but three months after opening it will become a morrisons overnight, with no explanation and the Halloween facepainting will be cancelled with no warning

Peckham Rye Zippos Circus & Protest
reeko replied to Tom Micklewright's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Is there much of a difference between horses performing in a circus and dressage as an olympic sport? Come Brazil horses will need to be air freighted over, which from the little I know (knowledge taken from a a 1980s TV movie) they find very stressful. Where to draw the line? -

My personal theory is that UDT is compiling a thesis on the benahiour of on line forums, their tolerance, what presses buttons, what types respond to his brand of provocation and what this says about our on-line social life. As it happens I think EDF generally came up trumps. On the other hand, if he was for real - well it doesn't bear thinking about. So I won't.

I completely get that he comes across as a bit of a dick - but this thread doesn't really leave the rest of you bathing in glory either. You might have managed to stoop beneath his level.

Bloke from work got two tickets for Saturday night to the athletics from the website at 12.30am on Friday, just above the press box right by the finish for the 100m. ?95 each. He thinks the website rocks. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hi Bloo noo this is a great opportunity, but if you are taking on additional responsibilities then you should expect to be renumerated for them - you are an employee - not someone on work experience! I have assumed you are female, and one of the reasons that women are often paid less than men for doing the same work is that we don't ask or fight for fair pay. I had to learn this in a previous job where all the men were paid more than the women simply because they played a better game of hard-ball. Don't give your employers an option as to whether or not to increase your pay, just ask how much the pay increase will be and if you don't think it is fair, ask for more. Good luck!

Derry City- I grew up there and it was a fab place for a youngster. Live music was endemic, the populaiton was young and up for a laugh - a small matter of the occassional riot, but added spice. Then an unfortunate side effect of the very welcome peace process was that all the scum bags got comfortable and the town centre became a violent cesspit of a weekend. Now the city is gearing up for 2013 city of culture. New and very beautiful bridge, riverside opened up, central square looking very nice, great and very reasonable new restaurants, and all this despite massive unemployment and general hardship. In short, was good, got a bit crap for a while, now looking like it is heading for good again. Well worth a visit - hands down more interesting than Belfast and much less expensive than Dublin. Do it people.

screw the moon cup snowboarder, i want to meet your friend. And I a not letting wyspi wipes anywhere near my lady palace

Also agree with the above, no matter how sensitively framed, there is a risk that some of the comments could be interpreted by victims of violent crime as blaming of the victim. I currently live alone and like most people cannot afford taxis to my front door everytime I am out after dark. I take sensible precautions, but I also have the RIGHT to walk the streets unmolested. I suggest we all show the victim some respect and cease proving suggestions on how she might have prevented what happened to her.

Oh e-dealer, was that last summer on the corner of Ady's road? If so I was the note leaver! Glad the bus company paid up. Either the driver was very lost or he got diverted through some totally unsuitable territory.

Heartbreaking to hear about this and I really hope the family get some solace form the amazing response. Just an idea but is there anyway to reach out to black cab drivers en masse? They are on the road 24/7 all over London. Hope you get your grandad back safe and sound as soon as possible
