It sounds such a great deal getting a water meter - you save money, right ? On the IOW a few years ago, water meters were installed wholesale for everyone - a kind of trial before rolling-out nationally. I think at the same time the similar occurred in (parts of ?) Scotland. People used less water, so they could realise their savings, and after a year the average saving was like 15% overall. How cool. You pay less for your water. The following year, the water company increased the cost of water. By 15%. People curse the water meters now, when previously they were such an assured prospect for saving money. Good luck with your water meter.

Lukas Browne came back from a couple of bad knock-downs to KO Ruslan Chagaev and win the WBA HW title in a fight which gained pace towards the end and proved that Browne has massive balls.
-
In my view water meters are a con, especially when enforced on an entire area.

A fat spliff. Then the fry-up. Then a pint to swill the lot down.

People that race down the tube escalator stairs at 100mph, right up behind you while you are walking down, then stamp and sign loudly even though you're doing a decent 80mph yourself. Especially when you're only like 6fr from the bottom of the escalator anyway. Just FO and do one.

V1 & V2 Bombs dropped on Lordship Lane.
KidKruger replied to computedshorty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
healey - the row of 6-7 townhouse opposite suffered upper-floor bomb damage from a bomb, not sure which bomb though (my understanding it's the one that landed where the DMC / community centre is now). If you look at the parapet at the top of the block, it only runs part of the way along the block, about half way I think. The houses where the parapet is missing had their upper floor repaired but the parapet was never reinstated. It's possible I suppose that the bomb at fault was actually what levelled the houses where that closed-down shop currently is. Possibly ComputedShorty will know (hi CS !), I've never seen evidence of a bomb hitting where that shop is tho. -
"Why not just put it on a plate in the first place?" Louisa, I think you know why wooden boards, slates, etc. are used - it's to be cool / trendy. But if you're at any kind of venue and want something changed then it's up to you to ask for it, saying it's not fair on shy people is a whole other subject - not specific to plates v slates.
-
What's with the passive thing like you've no say in the matter, jeezuz. Don't see an unfixable issue here, if you want a plate ask for a plate, you'll also be implicitly giving feedback to the restaurant/pub, especially if you request this from the mgr. I'd be surprised if the mgr seriously wants to look you in the face and say 'we have no plates'. If you wanted your beer in a straight glass you'd do the same, right ?

It's obviously reasonable to choose to keep your cat(s) indoors on account of the fool attacking cats locally, this is a local and specific danger in ADDITION to the constant risk of traffic. It's not reasonable to regard the attacks as part of the usual risk landscape because they are patently not !

Dog barking in lordship lane at night
KidKruger replied to Tarro's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oh I think I know the house, the dog howls at anyone strolling past. If you're interested to know who the owner is just knock on their door as it's obvious which house. I'm not sure the dog is outside 24/7 though, so careful with your phrasing. -
"8 hours a day is plenty" lol Plenty of what, and for what ? Based on who's say so ?! It depends completely what game you're in. Doing a minimum hours day gets you just a day's pay, no progression. I guess it depends what you're working for.
-
"8 hours a day is plenty. If you can't organise workload to allow your staff at least a semblance of home/leisure life, you are the one who is failing, perhaps." Yes perhaps in an environment where there's no competition, no reducing margin and the luxury of thinking first what hours everyone would like to work, before you commit to deals. Under those conditions you're probably spot on - but I've no clue where that world is. "8 hours a day is plenty. If you can't organise workload to allow your staff at least a semblance of home/leisure life, you are the one who is failing, perhaps. Presenteeism is rife and wasteful: just sticking around so the boss can see you after your shift finishes is far from being efficient." I think if you measure your people well you know pretty soon who's just hanging around in the office to 'do stuff' but not really contributing. It's naive in the extreme to think that commitment can be faked by just being in an office for many hrs. But I've said a couple of times my examples are local to what I see and not general, they're people who I'm lucky enough to work with and the dossers have left the building. I'd love some balance in my team demographically, but I've gotta get the best job done that I can.

My impression of 'immigrants' at a personal level is very positive. This myth about coming here to scrounge is tired. The UK workforce has needed a kick up the arse for years and now it's got one (or a succession of ones). Good. Sick and tired of the fabled 'honest working class' BS. Incomers in my experience are more proficient workers, more appreciative of the job, faster, think ahead a bit or with a wider view about what they are doing, are more inventive and offer actual suggestions for improvements, turn-up at agreed times, don't feint at the prospect of longer hours or extra commitment / support required at times, are more ambitious and are more positive. It's meant to be discriminatory to regard people in a different way because of their background, but if one's going to generalise I'd take immigrants as staff all day long. I have quite a large team at work, 15 of them are in London, 13 are Indian, the remaining 2x white guys I've just sacked mainly due to their inability to do a decent day's work. There sense of entitlement for doing feck all is bewildering, slagging-off the Indians while they do as little as they can (in terms of hours and throughput) placing the burden of that uncovered work on their colleagues. It's only my experience, but I know how I'm going to deliver my projects now and the local guys just haven't cut it at all. It's embarrassing TBH. The immigrants come over here and must think locals are handicapped for not recognising that all you have to do is a decent day's work for a decent day's dough. This is all about my field and my projects, not the entire story. But from what I see, thank feck these guys are here because it means things are gonna get done !

I would have thought the railway own the land, after all (I believe) the builders yard was an unloading facility for wounded soldiers from one of the World Wars wasn't it (WWI ?) ? If so, I'd imagine the builder's yard could possibly be private (or leased from railway company), but not the lane.
-
There's nowhere else local to drop-off, that's the way it's been set-up - limited parking around that area - not a viable (and sensible [and workable]) option. The lane is a cul de sac, so no-one is being blocked or slowed-down by drop-offs. People drop-off outside / near my house all the time, big deal, it's London. If you want your own lane then live in the country. From the other posts above, it seems someone living on the lane has been bossing the situation with signs - is that right ? I can understand the situation might change once a development has occured where the garden centre site was, but until then, really, what else is the lane going to be used for ? Someone's quite little private oasis in the centre of Zone 2. lol
-
It's a lane adjacent to the station. How can anyone in their right mind realistically expect it not to be used for drop-offs ? Signs up saying don't drop-off are un reasonable. If people in the railway cottages are complaining, tought titty. It's a busy station in zone 2 FFS.

Someone got me the BB series for Xmas, which was a big surprise cos I'm a known non-telly guy. Watched 5 episodes over weekend and thought it was ace !

Chudinov out boxed Sturm all night last night and for his efforts he list his world belt and got his first '0'. When they announced the first judge as marking it a draw the writing was on the wall, but then to announce the remaining two judges favouring Sturm... Shocking corruption.

People saying "... then you'll just turn around and say", as if people are never actually looking at each other when they speak (or they are but then turn away [or all the way around] before they speak in reply). Shite use of language.
