  1. Would be surprised, the last one (the closing down gallery now I think) lasted 2-3 yrs. I think it would be highly risky for SE22 given the 10's of ?1000's in business rates and property leasing. There's already a stall on saturdays down the market which covers reggae, ska and funk - good 'wrecka stow' IMO.
  2. you'll always get on the train you just have to be persistent in asking the folks to fold up their papers and move down the bloody carriage.
  3. FYI - I spoke to the blues guitarist today, he's playing at the Plough again in May, when I get the date I will say. His name is Niall Kelly and before arriving at the Plough last Saturday he got hit by a bus which almost wrote-off his guitar. He's now also opening a night for me at the 100 Club in August.
  4. The blues guy and his harmonica player at the Plough were realy good, I thought of praising them to the guvnor but he wasn't around - does he/the Plough have a handle on here, the ED Forum, that I could send a note too ? Did anyone else see them and would you go back to see 'em again ? Is there blues / live every saturday at Plough (I didn't realise it was on, just popped out wiv mate for a quiet one) ? One thing that would have made me leave ED was the lack of live music and now it's all over the place, absolutely top.
  5. It's a sad state of affairs that members of the public are allowed to not only own large / dangerous animals but take them into reach of other members of the public. How insane a state is that, especially in a large City ?! I have witnessed a few dogs being pulled-off live humans they are eating, mainly in SE Asia, and from what I've seen a process for getting a dog off is to blind it (use a pen or a stick) then throttle it with rope. I did see someone extend the blinding bit to pushing the stick right into the dog's brain and guess what the situation was concluded immediately Sounds harsh, looks harsher, not as harsh as someone bleeding to death from a torn artery though..
  6. It's not rational to assume all small businesses will succeed (they don't, by a vast majority). This is a problem with so many aspirational small business owners/investors. What is rational is to make judgements informed by various conditions affecting the operating environment. The judgement may not support the aspiration (i.e. success) and if it does not, some serious decisions have to be made. A judgement predicting a failure is not a negative judgement, though the failure itself can be regarded as negative (assuming the business was started for profit reasons). Also the person making the judgement is not necessarily BEING negative. I haven't read ????'s other stuff or all the comments on here but his basic point was fair.
  7. This is very scarey indeed. Is it actually legal that you can turn-up at your car and some guy is clamping it ? Isn't there supposed to be some notice in writing to your door via Royal Mail or recorded delivery ? Can't believe this guy's car was clamped like that.
  8. Bit harsh to take food away from the foxes, at least it would stop them tipping our bins over.
  9. Ate there yesterday for Sunday lunch and food was fine although could have been slightly warmer. I guess all our 3 x dishes weren't ready exactly same time and something had to wait. Overall was good experience - give 'em another chance.
  10. Not sure if 'ordinary' bombs / ordnance count on this thread but..... I understand the hairdressing suppliers site on Crystal Palace Rd (few yards South of CPT) was hit by bomb(s) in the war, demolishing those houses and causing extensive damage to the 3-storey terraced houses in the block opposite. I hear the top floor of that row of terraces (the ones which face the premises directly) were rebuilt as a result, which is why the skyline goes from straight-rendered parapet to up-down zigzag style (following the roofline) about halfway along the terrace.
  11. He is making a lot from it but he is also paying a shedload of tax on the sale, well into the ?100,000s. How sick is that.
  12. I got hassled for money by a bloke yesterday evening (Tuesday) around 1830 at the same bus stop by the DIY shop opposite ED station. Not sure if it was the same guy - this guy was around the 6ft mark, slim or athletic rather than fat and had a very confident look in his eye. I provided a confident look by return and said no mate, he went off, but I waited for the bus the remaining time facing the pavement where he walked off towards the Vale bar. I would not have let him walk behind me put it that way he seemed definitely up for it. It's a shame so many folks are feeling uncomfortable just trying to get to or from home.
  13. That bloke who runs it has been there most his working life, it was his Dad's business and I think his Dad (or Grandad) built the big shed/shelter from cut timber in the 1920's (so he told me anyways). He's helped me for 15 years as I needed timber and advice while I renovated my house and is a kind and gentle helpful man with a wealth of knowledge - I shall be sad to see him go and will surely pay my respects before he departs. He's had developers sniffing round for years obviously.
  14. Well I done got that freeview box now and used the old set-top aerial I normally use for my terrestrial telly and hey-presto I have clear pictures. The usual 5 TV channels are actually better than I have ever seen before at home ! Mark - I really appreciate the offer from yesterday I did not see it until just now but thanks anyway, that would have been a good test. As it turns out I got a box with the slot for Setanta and have it all working now. All the best, KK.
  15. Wow !! Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm off to get my freeview box later today on account of your speedy and pertinent advice ! I actually want the box so I have a card slot to access Setanta for tomorrow's boxing (and other contests going forward) so speak now or forever..... if you know of any reason why I may have an issues getting Setanta. Can't believe how quickly my query was resolved...thanks again !
  16. I am a bit thick with technology so would appreciate some help with figuring out my chances of getting Freeview in SE22 using only a small TV-top aerial to pick-up the signal. I want to get freeview but just by plugging the freeview box into my TV and using the small aerial. When I text the freeview no. with my postcode to see if I will be able to get a signal I get a reply saying 'yes as long as your rooftop aerial is in good condition'. Have any of you clever people ever got away with watching freeview without having to fit an aerial on the roof ??? Reason I ask is I don't want to fork-out for the box and subscription card (Setanta) to find I can't pick-up a decent signal. FYI - I get the normal 5 channels no problem. Any advice gladly appreciated.
  17. Yeah I walk down the road most days. When the windows to their lounge are open or when they sit out on their front steps (i.e. during summer) is worst. They abuse people if they feel like it at the time, including blokes, women, kids, coppers, old folks and I even saw them swearing and gesticulating at a plane a few weeks ago. One time I walked past wearing a shirt which had pink bits on, i was on the other side of the road and they were nowhere to be seen then suddenly their window was open they were leaning out and i walked the rest of the way down Whateley road to the tune of 'Gay' and 'Queer' !! I walked past about 6 weeks ago with my lad who's 4 and got called a paedophile ! I don't care if they are handicapped or not, it's just their behaviour I am commenting on, it's targetted, intentional and from what I see at least alcohol-fuelled. It would take them less effort to say 'hi' to folks that walk by.

  19. Sue, agree with the widening-the-audience agespan bit. I can help out in someway hopefully, I've mentioned some of the things i may be able to help with already but also I have fair organisational skills and done some DJing (hence sound) and lighting (i.e. I did lights for Little Barrie at 100 Club last year). Let me know, if you've help already good luck !
  20. Sounds good. Be happy to help on the Folk DJ front I have my own rig (just need house amp and speakers) and a massive folk collection going back to 1920's. Also huge contemporary music and ska / reggae collection. That should save some pence hopefully. FYI I've seen Bert Jansch play at EDT upstairs twice in the past too ! (I can see the promo material namechecks already ....)
  21. Well done Sue ! If you need any help let me know I dunno much about organising but I spend a lot of time attending FCs around London (mainly Islington one and the Cellar Upstairs in Kentish town). I'll even get up and do one but I guarantee I AM crap so please don't laugh if I do, or at least, don't let me hear it ! So if it's being called a Folk Club, what's is it's scope music wise ? i.e. is there to be a 'frame' within which the prospective players need to fit ? UK folk or world ? One thing I've been thinking of trying for some time is an old-time night so maybe I could blag Tom Paley to come down.
  22. A few years ago when the patio area was built and they 'ternyised' the pub, a sign went up saying no dogs, no work clothes and no something else (can't remember). This meant a lot of local tradesmen (including my neighbour who'd being going there with his crew every weekday for almost 30 yrs) could not go in at the end of their day. I know they also felt a little resentment and therefore at weekends if they were out for a pint, went elsewhere i.e. the Hearn or the Castle. This is no dig at the bar or the owner/proprieter, just ONE of the reasons why there are less customers there than there were, say, 10 years ago. It's not on the high st, it's purely residential area so it's going to be mainly working folks living nearby.
  23. Fly out of there many weeks, ?26 with cab firm (dunnoe who they are - lost the card !). When being picked-up, the firm may advise in advance of a 'meet and greet' ?12 if they have to pay to wait in a holding bay (car park) for taxi drivers waiting for folks whose plnes are late). I have never paid it, tell them to wait 1/2 mile away from the airport they know where to do that they are cab drivers. Takes about 20-25 mins during AM but I always get a cab for 0600AM. Coming back same price (without M&G charge), takes @ 45-60mins. I got a lift back from a nice Bangladeshi bloke in a really

  25. Jah Lush's comment is basically what I was getting at - people seem to generally think that (even when musically very knowledgeable), it's just a stereotype that persists. But I would suggest the common perception of distinction between 'folk' and acoustic is traditionally oriented 'backward-looking' ballads and dance tunes (though clearly this view is only valid in the last 80 yrs or so) versus music that is generally not electrified (actually much acoustic stuff is what 'folk' used to be i.e. based on current life). The folk club is a top idea maybe we can get some decent players down there I know some guys who may drop in for the thrill. Anybody going to the Hippy Mother Club at Dulwich Hamlets bar on Friday ?
