  1. The insurance company will always offer something desultory, so do your homework, get a good market value, and be prepared to haggle with them if you decide to claim. I know many people who've accepted the first offer the insurance co. have made and lost hundreds. For the ?1100 one, print it, make sure it's a close match, and prepare for a few weeks of negotiating; you should get something close. And be ruthless - they are, so should you! Good luck - hopefully someone with recent experience will be on soon to give more advice.
  2. Am I the only one who doesn't like the stuff? Smells like burnt flesh. I like every other type of meat, but not pigmeat....

The technophobes do seem to find Apple easier to use. (And supporting Apple products in a domestic environment is bliss compared to Windows...)
  4. Agreed, you need another dimension - like the political compass. Labour and Conservatives are very similar http://www.politicalcompass.org/ukparties2010

Please, you have to tell us what happened next - did he make it? Or did he go via the ramp?

As it happens, I'm affected by the other parts too (no Charing Cross trains stopping from Jan 2015 to August 2016. Closure from 20 December to 4 Jan.). But no-one seems to be able to give me a concrete answer to this one question.

Just tell me when it will stop - some say 2014, others 2015, now 2018. The staff I've asked at London Bridge don't know. I just want to be kept informed...

The Jubilee line extension was something like ?330m per mile Whilst I agree that the Emirates (?35m odd) is a white elephant, but coupled with the Routemaster cost (?35m depending on who you listen to) would buy you less than a quarter mile.

I've complained that it can take over 5 minutes to get off platform 15 in the morning peak, and that the crowd can be quite tight. Not heard anything back...and apparently it's going to be like that until 2016?
  11. All good links. To add, tobacco; not cigarettes but snuff (relatively harmless) using machinery from the Napoleon era: http://www.samuelgawith.co.uk/default.asp
  12. Jains don't eat it, but never heard of Western vegans avoiding it
  13. Can't make it but interested! Do you have a list of local stockists?
  14. My parents still run a Baxi Bermuda from the 1970s. If you have the cash sitting in an account earning 0.5% then why not go for it, otherwise I would just leave it...
  15. I heard KP on radio 4 this morning (or was it yesterday...) and I have to say I believed what he had to say - and he came across as fairly down to earth bloke.

Thanks for finding that out and sharing - I'd just assumed it would be very short term! Oh well.

It may have been economically beneficial for India, Ireland, USA, Australia etc. to have remained part of the British Empire, but some people have this mad emotional need to run their own affairs. That's why this referendum is really about your personal feelings, and is in a sense politically neutral.
  18. Never use the trainline, they add on surcharges. Go direct to eastcoast who run the route and they give you an extra 10%. Book in advance and try very early/very late mid-week trains or at weekends. http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/ Oh, and it's August - peak holiday season and Edinburgh festival is on, so east coast services will be rammed and cheap fares scarce
  19. Platform 15 - does anyone know when it will be widened?
  20. China. The price of rice never rises, and the property market never falls.

As per the links above, you have six years in England Wales to force the manufacturer to repair it free of charge if it breaks down.
  22. Unless you're prone to losing/breaking your phones or having them stolen then insurance isn't for you (I've never had it in my 15 years of phone ownership). As vgrant says you can try and get it repaired if it's under six years old...be prepared to put in a bit of effort depending on the retailer! http://blog.moneysavingexpert.com/2013/10/22/how-long-do-you-have-to-take-faulty-goods-back/
  23. Land Registry publishes it, you're not permitted to redact. Exclusions are commercial sales and those not for full price (e.g. reposessions). Full list here: http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/market-trend-data/house-price-data-exclusions
