  1. Also consider train from Brighton to Clapham Junction (45 minutes), then Overground to Denmark Hill (15 minutes) Off-peak that may be quicker.

The blackberry is switched off and work email disabled on my personal phone. Granted, I could say "I am currently out of the office, the blackberry is switched off and work email disabled on my work phone. I shall return on x date, but may or may not check email a few days before going back in, depending on how I'm feeling. If you really need me, try calling - good luck, as I'm on a remote farm in Wales with no reception, and no inclination to go into the village until the booze runs out".
  3. "limited" means I'm at a conference/training/all day meeting, so I won't get back to you immediately "No access" means that - I'm on holiday thanks, work phone is switched off (or work email disabled on personal phone). If you're luck I'll check it a few days before I go back into the office. If it's really urgent? Call me!
  4. I wouldn't try and intervene either! Not worth the risk. Best just to call the Police as soon as possible (999 if you see it happening, or 101 after the event).
  5. Actually Fox, frozen and *really* fresh are equal. But it has to be really fresh - like only a few days old. As for taste and texture...well there is a difference, and if you don't mind it, then that's fine. But there is.

Louisa what is this obsession with driving everywhere? The obesity, slothfulness and inefficiency of this country are exactly why the UK is going to the dogs. Getting my groceries delivered - price matched to Tescos - is efficient, economic and keeps traffic off the roads. In addition, I walk 5 miles a day to and from work. Every week I walk to Peckham and back, buying up garlic, spring onions, okra, herbs, meat, fish and a myriad of other bits and pieces - because it's better quality and cheaper. But Ocado beats them on price for wine, tinned goods, some greens (broccoli, spinach). And you have no idea of the principle of a car being a necessity. Try living in the wilds of Scotland (I have!) and you'll soon find out. No-one needs a car. My 90 year old grandmother lived car-free in a house heated by coal fires and did all her own shopping - carried home.

Whilst you heave around the district in your beaten up Nissan Micra, loaded with slowly-defrosting frozen peas and lamb shanks, others enjoy having food delivered to the door (and the net-curtain twitching from neighbours as they tut-tut at the extravagance of Ocado). Meanwhile, I'm sitting on the sofa counting the cool grand a year I save by not having a car - whilst the oil companies, Government, parking attendants, garages and car dealers continue to relieve you of your (hard-earned?) cash...
  8. Go on then Louisa...who is it you write for? Daily Mail or The Telegraph?
  9. Wonderful if you like driving in the metropolis. Personally, I use the money I save by not having a car to (a) shop at Ocado and (b) take a decent fortnight's break in Tuscany or Marrakech (based on monthly car running costs including depreciation of ?100 or ?1200 per year). And still have some money left over to fritter on hand-made pasta and hipster beer on the Lane...
  10. Why on earth would I go - to the Old Kent road of all places - to buy food? When Ocado can deliver it to my door? And I don't need a car!
  11. Well there's reams of evidence out there that point towards lower emissions at 20mph, as well as against, so call that a draw. It's quieter for residents. And I don't think anyone will disagree that it reduces fatalities, especially amongst children? So, the problem is acceptance and enforcement (really, if all red routes stay at 30mph, what is the problem? How much time would you really lose?) (BTW, ideal fuel efficiency and lower emissions is driving at a steady 50mph, good luck with that!

Agree stressful...but I get the same all the time in 30mph zones -in fact I was overtaken yesterday by a nutcase who must have touched over 40 on the south circular going past the school
  13. I would leave at 0630 at the latest and expect it to take 2 hours (it should actually take 1.5 at that time). If you leave later the traffic will just be murder, personally I prefer to sacrifice a little sleep and arrive in plenty of time...but
  14. Pipe smoking
  15. What's a CD player Grandad?
  16. Depends on the timings (if you can get a good connection at Peckham Rye it should be quicker), but generally speaking yes go to London Bridge...
  17. Every 2 - 3 minutes on the core section (London Bridge through to King's Cross) After the core section south of the river there are several branches (e.g. Wimbledon, Brighton and via Peckham Rye) So in 2018 when it's completed you may see a small increase to maybe three trains instead of two per hour. But I wouldn't bet on it! But you will get new trains from 2016!

Suicide attacks have been going on since the dawn of time..look at the Kamikazes of WW2. Nothing new, just more effective these days with explosives.
  19. The 08:09 from ED was 1 minute early arriving into LB this morning - and I got through the barriers within 2 minutes. 1 journey out of 9 this week went ok!
  20. They don't really sit with ED's changing demographic, so I suspect they may close...

And we all lose. Au-contraire; I see exactly where you are coming from. Doing so will also turn some moderates against the system, justify - in their minds - the terrorists actions, and even upset the portion of newspaper readers who don't share the sense of humour. This is a situation which requires a little thought be put into the response. And no, I don't quite know what that should be at this stage...

  23. Is this the Post Office next to Sainsbury's? By all accounts the Landlord is a real shyster. Good blokes who ran that shop too they have their own now just on the corner...
  24. History lesson! I actually joined it in 2007 for all of three weeks, scared the hell out of me and never been back since.
