  1. you could try getting two stain shades - e.g. pine and mahogany - and try blending them to get the right colour. I managed that on a pine bannister rail to match the older ones.
  2. 10 print "As a driver, I can't believe that pedestrians and cyclists..." 20 print "As a pedestrian, I can't believe that car drivers and cyclists..." 30 print "As a cyclist, I can't believe that car drivers and pedestrians..." 40 goto (10) RUN
  3. If I'm around, I'll make them a cup of tea. If I'm out, I'll tell them to help themselves. It's a bit cheeky if you didn't offer, but not unknown. Did they wash up the cups and spoons? Toilet depends, on a big job with many builders I'd expect them to source their own. The worst I had was a builder who chain-smoked my cigarettes. That was easy to solve though, put them in a drawer.
  4. On the number 12 bus this week: Shakira
  5. Once it drops below 80 years it becomes increasingly more expensive to renew. We took into account the maximum it would cost to renew our 77 year old lease when buying using the calculator at http://www.lease-advice.org/calculator/ and this was deducted from the asking price...although that was years ago... Anything 80+ should not affect the house sale price in the current market. Warning: once it drops below 65 it's virtually unmortgageable.
  6. I kinda agree with you steveo (kosher/halal slaughter excepted if it's done properly). There are millions of battery chickens in appalling conditions. Cattle and pigs kept in pens. Dirty fish farming practices and the spread of disease to native stocks. Intensive dairy farms. Personally I find it hard to hear an anti-fox hunting view from people who buy battery farmed eggs/chicken and pay ?1 for four pints of milk.

We just re mortgaged through Nationwide, and the surveyor valued the property at 15% less than the EA's maximum. Which was still 1/3 more than we paid for the place in 2011.

Right...so you're saying that anyone affected by noise (traffic, neighbours, air planes, children...) should take drugs or seek counselling? So for instance, you'd be happy for me to come to your house, sit by your bed and keep you awake all night; and all you need to do is pop a few pills or seek some counselling to recover?
  9. Ground rent sounds high but not excessive (the acid test is are you happy - as can be - to pay it, given the price of the flat?) One the maintenance side, if you come across a place which is cost free to maintain let us know :-) so yes that's normal. As inanc says, your solicitor should be advising. Who pays the buildings insurance? Is there a service charge or sink fund?
  10. "Do please let me know how you would like my posts referenced in future, personally I prefer 'Harvard' but I will consider other reference styles. " ED Polytechnic? None of these links state that CBT is effective in eliminating sensitivity to noise. When you can demonstrably state that it does, do let us know!
  11. "I am not a CBT practitioner but:- " Then I'd argue you're not qualified. If you can point me towards evidence supporting your theories, happy to read...
  12. Well if you can tell me how (a) CBT will help these people (b) you would illuminate the many people who have joined HACAN and other organsations © they are going to afford it; ?60 a session? How many sessions? And if it doesn't work?
  13. Actually, from an acoustic point of view, it's quite interesting. Some people are more senstitive to sound, some are tone deaf, and some are practically deaf. On top of that, some people have different sensitivities. I'm completely immune to someone dragging their fingernails down a blackboard for instance, whilst some people's spine tingle just thinking about it. Aircraft noise is real and affects people. Advising them to take CBT is not realistic...

Really? Hope they've got deep pockets, that site seems to be cursed for redevelopment, been going since when, 1983?

Point taken on your second!
  16. Inbetween yes and no - you simply don't know, haven't contacted the Rye, and are posting unsubstantiated rumours on a public forum. You haven't been sent a new card, or PIN? Which suggests it's an error on the bank's part, otherwise they would have stopped your card? Poor form...
  17. Is this British Military Fitness? Surprised that people will pay to be shouted at and pushed around. Must be a great job!
  18. I called them today, the chap knew all about the problem. Only way of resolving apparently is to check the box, sign and return.
  19. Those camera cars make money for the council...if people are so stupid as to stop on zig-zags, then it's a good income stream. I for one am also happy that these cars are operating late at night; maximising their revenue potential. (What the council do with the money raised is an entirely difference matter...)
  20. Our confirmation arrived yesterday and had the same error (bar address). I too always opt-out.
  21. You need to treat every device as a suspect device; could be as simple as a loose lightbulb. If no suspect devices, then get an electrician in.
  22. It's at least half a day's work, so at least ?300...but as Foxy says there are so many variables the best thing is to get some quotes. Peter Bennison gets good reviews. Have you tried bleeding the current radiator?
  23. You can have wood with underfloor heating as long as it's done to the manufacturer's guidelines. I looked into Amtico/Karndean and found that laying real tiles is roughly the same price per m2...
  24. But who ever actually needs to make this right turn? Surely it's easier to go up Lordship Lane and turn left instead? Or am I missing something?
  25. Yes, immediately, so that they have a chance of catching him. If he's innocent and was meant to be at 86 he'll be able to prove this to them. Dial the non-emergency 101.
