Keef if you want to try the natural route, then I would recommend trying Sesame oil. It's been used as a healing oil for thousands of years and is known in Ayurvedic medicine as the 'Queen of Oils.' I know someone with terrible psoriasis who swears by it. You need cold pressed, organic oil - it's anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti viral. It's a very light oil and is easily absorbed so you don't feel at all greasy. Google it and I think you'll be amazed!

How much should I pay my childminder?
prdarling replied to Tessa99's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Childminders earn about ?5 per hour and they take care of their own tax and NI. I pay mine 4 weeks holiday. -
My first son went into a bed 6 weeks after turning two. He continued to have a lunchtime nap in there for another 8 months. If you decide to move him into a bed I would advise a baby gate across his bedroom door - this will solve the sleepwalking issue, plus it becomes a big playpen for when you are trying to get something done and it makes life so easy when you have a toddler and a baby. Second son is now 2 yrs 2 months but a different kettle of fish. Not to be trusted! Tried him in a bed but he just kept getting out and getting in with his brother (they share a room). Will try again in the new year but no real rush

Cranial Remoulding to Treat Flat Head Syndrome
prdarling replied to fairylamb's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Fairylamb both my sisters sons were in helmets for around 4 months at the age of 6 months. Both had pretty severe misalignment. The difference is remarkable, in factr they use one of the boy's stats as a case study at the Starband clinic she attended in Leeds. Neither baby had any issue with the helmet...they really don't notice it's on. In her opinion ?4.4k well spent. If you want to ask any questions I can get her on here...just let me know -
Tyrrell Road..is this in the school black hole?
prdarling replied to prdarling's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Not put off Toast, already here in Ryedale, just looking for more space. Want to stay around here, so Goodrich or Heber - this side of ED. Not sure what happens if I put Goodrich first and then actually wind up closer to Heber? God it's a headache. -
Giving birth - hospital recommendations?
prdarling replied to sandy_rose's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I was nervous about Kings after the horror stories you read on here but I had a positive experience both times with the fabulous Oakwood midwives, one in 06 and the other in 07. Back then you could choose a hospital birth and the Oakwood midwives would look after you at home then come with you to Kings to help birth your baby...am I right in thinking they will only do homebirths now? Am tentatively considering number 3! Anyway, with both babies, the midwife phoned ahead to see if Room 12 was available (the big one with the pool) and both times it was free, so far from having the baby in the broom cupboard/on the table etc etc, I had the room of my choice. Babies were delivered with just me, the midwife aand my husband in the room. One of my sons was born mid September which is apparently one of their busiest times (Christmas fun and games) so I don't know if I was just very very lucky, but I can't really say a bad word about it. The antenatal care is excellent even though the waiting times can be horrendous and it's a bit like a scene from Little Britain up there most of the time, the postnatal care is not so hot, but it's pretty poor everywhere - not enough staff. Take your own painkillers or better still , if all is OK get discharged from the delivery room as I did with baby number 2. I was at home in the bath with a glass of champagne 3 hours after I had him! The Oakwood midwife came to see me at 5pm. Perfect. My experiences are obviously tinged with the rosy glow of time and it might be all different now but like others have said, you can start at home and transfer if you need to. I was told that the hospital midwives tend to leave the pool rooms to the community midwives such as Oakwood, so if you do transfer in you may have more chance of a pool room. Hope it goes well either way - best of luck prdarling -
I got a full size sin- gle bed from Ikea, which apart from being cheap, is also very low to the ground - less than a foot. My son has come out of it twice in 18 months but stayed asleep both times as it's so low down. I fail to see the point of a toddler bed. They look hilariously small at first but grow so fast!

Moving House and Primary Schools

Ko - as the crow flies means literally the straight line distance a bird would take to fly from one point to another. New school routes do not take into account how many twists and turns you have to take to walk there -
Dulwich pre-school - positive/negative experiences?
prdarling replied to LT's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think Buds is lovely. Definitely true that they are not too hot on admin but the children are well cared for and love being there, so I don't really care about the other stuff. My son is 3 and a half and has been going since he turned 2. I have just upped his hours to 9-3.30 x3 days a week, he was going 9-1, but I need the extra time now. They don't have sleeping facilities so if your child is only 2 and still needs a daytime sleep you may need a real nursery as opposed to a pre-school. It depends what you are looking for - if you want them to be hot-housed and learning Mandarin then this is not the place, but for a fun, warm, friendly environment with caring staff and lovely kids, then you can't go worng -
Newborn in parents room or in it's own room?
prdarling replied to Gimme's topic in The Family Room Discussion
DS1 slept in crib next to our bed for 6 weeks but had daytime naps in big cot in own room - worked a treat, slept like a dream. DS2 was in attic bedroom and I felt nervous about him being on another floor so slept in there with him on blow up mattress. Also was Oct/Nov so couldn't be bothered to traipse up and down in freezing cold. End result was he was a terribke sleeper, liked to have me there at all times, didn't sleep through the night for 18 months. The 2 may be unconnected but if I have DS3 I know which route I'll be taking (and I'll be aiming for a Spring Summer baby - the dead of night in winter is a bloody awful place to be) -
Advice needed:Starting on cow milk
prdarling replied to nicolemodesti's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Mine both switched at 1, I just changed one milk for another overnight and neither of them noticed...ditto going from whole milk to semi skimmed. I think they were on one bottle in the morning and one at night. Mine are both milkaholics and would drink the stuff all day if I let them so they don't seem to care as long as it's white -
Just in case the lady in question is a forumite, a big thank you to the lovely lady who kindly gave me a couple of bananas to pacify one screaming toddler and one runaway toddler while I had to put all my shopping back as my brand new card failed at the checkout and I had no way of paying. The humilation of being on hands and knees unloading it all from the bottom of the pram while my 2 year old was puce with rage and about to topple headfirst out of the pram will not be forgotten. Being offered such kindness in that situation brought tears to my eyes (well, more tears to my eyes...I was already over the edge). Thanks again

How utterly revolting. There is no excuse for this, she should absolutely have been asked to leave. I am a mother of a toddler and a baby and I am appalled. It's people like this who give mothers in ED the name of arse. We are not all mentalists who think it's perfectly acceptable to express breastmilk in the front window of the Bishop, let our children run riot around tables where people are eating or indeed change stinky nappies in a public place. I am impressed Domitianus used 'heroic courtesy and understatement,' I'd have been much less restrained.

...the one opposite the DIY place. Anyone know what's going on with it? It's been boarded up for the 4 years that I've lived on Ryedale but there seems to be something happening. Any insider info?

For 2 months, there was a car parked outside my front door with a flat tyre and a non-local parking permit. I called ED cop shop (as was fed up with parking my 2 small children up the road) and was told that if it had a valid tax disc it could park where it liked... didn't even bother to check if it had been stolen, which I found a bit odd. A couple of weeks ago I came across two policemen perusing the makeshift car lot at the end of my road (Ryedale) and asked them if they'd take a look. It hadn't been stolen but was registered to someone in SW9 so a bit odd. They said that if it turned out that the owner had form, they would get it moved. Hey presto it was gone the next day. Not a great deal of help to you unless you have a couple of friendly rozzers walking past but there you go...

Not knocking the cash, but throwing (tiny amounts of) money at the problem isn't a solution. It a shame i couldn't even spend the fiver on anything useful like bread, milk or potatoes. It reminds me a bit of the shops you used to see in Moscow in the 80's.. hordes of people queuing for non existent staples with empty shelves all around them!!!
-
Fuschia, I contacted the Co-op (when it was in its former incarnation) about lack of pushchair space, perilously stacked boxes, lack of basic stock and the general impression that the shop had just been ransacked as it was so scruffy. They sent me a ?5 voucher to spend in store. So that solved everything......

Totally agree. Even more difficult to negotiate than before. I can't get past the front door with my twin pram. I have to leave my little boys by the door while I dart in, inevitably to discover that they have run out of what I want (normally something ridiculous like bread or potatoes.) And while I am on the subject of stock control.. for the love of God, does it take a genius to work out that if you run out of organic milk 20 minutes after it has been delivered then you need to stock more. The queues are horrendous and there is now less space to stand, bearing in mind that 1 punter in every 5 has a pushchair and there are still unpacked pallets piled high at every turn. They have managed to make it dark and dingy as well... oh and I got charged ?2.50 for two baking potatoes. Give me the lovely Turkish shop by the Forest Hill Tavern any day. Still a bit tight with a twin pram but the lovely man sends one of his colleagues to stand with my boys while I go in. Better selection of everything and loads of 'exotic' items you won't find in the Co-op like garlic and parsley. It's a no brainer.

???? if you are in East Dulwich and in reach of the Oakwood or Brierley midwives (I think there is one other team beginning with A?)it's like having an independent midwife on the NHS. I had both of my boys with the Oakwood midwives but gave birth at Kings. The midwives work in a team of 3, all routine appointments while pregnant are held in your home and the 3 midwives take turns in seeing you so you get to know them all, then one of them delivers your baby either at home or at Kings. I can't fault them. I know this is a thread about Kings so i will add that you don't need to come across hospital midwives if you use the above system as the Oakwood midwife (or similar) stays with you until baby is born, but you will meet the Kings midwives on the post natal ward which is beyond a joke for all the reasons already stated. If you have to stay on a postnatal ward, sort your own food and painkillers out, it's a lot quicker, but ???? the midwives in ED are amazing - private atyle care for no extra cash.. pretty incredible
