Goose Green councillors - how can we help?
Siduhe replied to jamesmcash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
For the background as to why no hire cycles in Southwark see here - https://www.citymetric.com/transport/why-south-east-london-doesnt-have-boris-bikes-805 The scheme involves elements of council-funded ?pay to play? (or at least did in 2015) - and the reported figures that other councils have paid to get the scheme extended to their area aren?t small. -
We regularly get woodpeckers, collared doves and jays in our and our neighbour's back gardens - Underhill/Melford/Wood Vale. I think it's quite regional even within ED.

I don't have snowy's level of knowledge but there are ways that charities can contribute to the election of a candidate in the US - just particular ways they go about it which aren't seen to infringe the letter of the law. For example, a charitable organisation can run an ad campaign which supports their charitable interests and highlights that a particular candidate has the same views, but without making a donation to the candidate themselves. They can also specify how any funds are used in a way that supports their charitable purposes (e.g. funding volunteers to drive certain categories of people to the polling station). The rules are a bit stricter in the UK but political activity is still allowed so long as it supports the charity's purpose. There's some detailed guidance on this but the highlights are:

It?s all being done under the guise of emergency Covid-19 measures on a ?temporary? basis with the possibility of being made permanent in future. I?m all for sensible, thought out measures to benefit the ED community as a whole but this feels like a total subversion of the democratic process.

Foxy, you do know that's a spoof video, right? ;-)

Are you within the Peckham West CPZ area https://consultations.southwark.gov.uk/environment-leisure/peckhamwestparking/? If so - this was consulted on and approved back in 2019 and came into force a week or so ago. There's a few threads on it but you'll need to get a permit if you're within the area.

Major fire/incident this morning in Underhill Rd/Melford Rd
Siduhe replied to IlonaM's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just to say that this story has a happy ending - Theo has been found and rescued by his family. With huge thanks to all the lovely neighbours around Melford/Wood Vale and Underhill who got in touch with possible sightings - there are a lot of black and white cats in the area - but one of the sightings paid off. Thanks again. -

Snakefilth - on the off chance you?re not just trying to provoke a reaction - the family have lost everything and their immediate neighbours are similarly affected. Roof, floors, stairs in the house - all gone - horrible and terrifying for everyone involved. Have a bit of basic human empathy. And yes please keep an eye out for the cat - thanks purple01. Black and white - answers to Theo. Likewise happy to help catch and care for him so he can be reunited with his family - if anyone sees him. -

We live close by. Everyone got out fine and no injuries but serious damage to the house so Melford between Wood Vale and Underhill likely to be closed most of the day apparently. -
It's worth looking at the comments posted on the Council website Covid-!9 Healthy Streets map - lots of people want their roads closed to through traffic - there are comments re Bellenden/Adys/Nutbrook/Townley/Calton Ave etc - including my own street (not by me!). What that says to me is there's absolutely a discussion to have about traffic calming measures in our area, but on an area basis, not street by street. Those people who want the roads closed to through traffic must accept that they can't have that in isolation (so they get all the benefit while others who don't get their roads closed take all the extra pain), so what compromises are they willing to make? Are they willing to forego deliveries at peak times or not be able to use their car at peak times at all? That seems extreme, but then so does closing roads which are used not just by people passing through our area but by all of us to get to A to B. You'll also note the Southwark site asks people to confirm they would be happy to keep these changes in place after the Covid-19 emergency ends, so this is clearly being considered as a driver of long term change. For my own part, I'm absolutely on board with making sensible changes to traffic and streets in our area to minimise driving and promote cycling and walking, but it has to be as part of an actual plan, which includes improving public transport, rather than something piecemeal that benefits those who shout loudest for their own personal interests over the majority of people who live in this area. We've seen with the approach to CPZ that Southwark's view is that it's better to put through radical change in a few areas so as to force nearby streets to move in a similar way. Maybe they are right that is the best way to drive effective change, but I'd rather have a thought through plan that everyone gets a say on. https://southwarkstreetspace.commonplace.is/comments

The issues said to be affecting Melbourne Grove and others equally apply to many other streets in our area. But again we see this sort of one-sided proposal that takes no account of other nearby residents. I?d be more supportive of this sort of approach if there was a quid pro quo - agreement by residents not to have deliveries in peak times or closing the street to traffic entirely, including residents. Which, of course, would be totally unfair and unrealistic to expect those residents to put up with. I?m disappointed to see this proposal come back again, in this guise, with so little detail and opportunity for others to comment. There?s absolutely a debate to have about traffic access to residential streets in ED. But a proper discussion, informed by data and with everyone getting a say.

Please Help! Can't post in "What's On in East Dulwich" Forum?
Siduhe replied to RAINSTICK's topic in The Lounge
It's likely because you are using a banned word in your draft - they are added to stop spammer posts or people posting multiple times on the same thing. The words can be a bit random ("kitchen" was one for a while, "bump" still is I think). Try rewording the post and see if it will let you post. -

Fwomble Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I?ve been offered a test thru this app & booked > one at Greenwich, but confirmation > does not give full address of site. This does not > seem to be available online either. Can anyone > help? Thanks There is a drive through testing site at one of the car parks at the O2. Sorry - no idea if that's the one being referred to but it was on a news a few weeks ago when it opened. -
Stock is definitely better both at DKH and Bell Green, but I really didn't enjoy my last Sainsburys trip at the weekend, because of the customers. There were plenty of people wearing masks (good) but almost no attempt at social distancing from the majority of people in the store (bad) - lots of pushing past other people to get at stock and blocking aisles so people couldn't move past at a safe distance. It really felt to me like people were getting back to normal shopping habits and/or felt like wearing a mask made them invulnerable. There were also lots of couples (of all ages) and groups shopping together, which I didn't think was permitted. I generally have been fine going out to do one big weekly shop but this was the first time since lockdown started that I felt really uncomfortable being out in public (even with a mask).

I thought this was a very good way of explaining it visually and it's certainly done the rounds on social media. We could do with more communications specifically aimed at young adults to drive the message home.

tomskip, that?s completely fair - but plenty of other photos showing smaller groups sunbathing, so I understand the frustration. I haven?t left the house since Thursday pm (as I didn?t need to) until about 40 mins ago when I was stir-crazy enough to need a quick 20 min walk round Dulwich Park to get fresh air. It?s the same story - lots of people following guidelines, being respectful of space and others and then a minority blocking pathways in small groups, not respecting space and generally treating their time in the park like it?s a normal day out. Which it just isn?t. I will say that almost every jogger and cyclist we saw was in the ?fully respectful of others? category. Would have been 100% if the young woman looking at her phone had realised we?d all stopped to let a family out of the park at a safe distance so hadn?t brushed right past that family and my husband and jogged on obliviously.

For those who are questioning the decision to shut down Brockwell Park - there were some pretty shocking photos on Twitter including this one from 4 April: https://twitter.com/persephone_west/status/1246723644920942592/photo/1 Edited to say that I can see people are questioning if this is genuine photo actually taken on Saturday - which I don't know but there are others on there too.

Lots of neighbourly clapping by Underhill/Melford/Wood Vale - really good to hear and made me feel quite emotional.

For me that's exactly the point - people should be taking steps to put society first, and their own personal preferences second. I wouldn't dream of calling out someone who is taking reasonable steps to keep 2m apart from others while jogging in the park, but someone who is running around without any care of the people around them, expecting them to get out of his/her way is something else. And I'm absolutely fine with someone taking a different view of the risks to their own health of the coronavirus, but much less fine with someone who knowingly chooses to put other people's health at risk, so as not to be inconvenienced in their daily life. That's what functioning as a society means to me at least.

Interesting article in the Economist today which analyses data released by Citymapper to show how people moving around different cities it operates in have changed from normal patterns. It seems to confirm that Londoners were out and about this weekend far more by foot and public transport than in other European cities. Appreciate that the demographic that use Citymapper may be skewed but presumably it's a fair comparison of its users across different cities. The article is behind a paywall and is copyrighted, but the key conclusion is:

I?d also suggest - for those of us that can, shopping outside peak hours. I just did a late evening trip - store was being restocked - got everything I needed, was much quieter and had the advantage of freeing up peak times for those who need it more (e.g. people with young families). That said, Sainsburys at Bell Green is reducing its opening hours from 8am to 8pm from tomorrow - not sure if DKH is going to do the same. Was also pleased to see Sainsburys enforcing the item limits strictly including via the self scan app. Someone was trying to buy 3 x 12 loo rolls and a staff member was explaining nicely but firmly to him why he couldn?t and offering him different options (2 x 9 pack) to get him what was permitted.

The army in Clapham photo is over a year old and shows cadets on parade. The people who are circulating that and other similar photos on social media, suggesting that we are about to go into a military curfew, are totally irresponsible idiots (Monica not suggesting the person who circulated it to you is - mean the people who deliberately tried to start this rumour).
