  1. We get a regular delivery from Riverford who have swapped plastic nets for nets made of beech wood. They have a pretty measured view - some packaging is always going to be needed and some of that will be plastic, but where other options exist they use them. It?s about reducing overall consumption not banning plastic entirely. https://wickedleeks.riverford.co.uk/opinion/news-farm-plastic/wooden-nets-and-sustainable-packaging
  2. Absolutely agree, and don't pay for the service by all means. But then don't use your neighbour's bin who has paid without asking or offering a contribution! Most people have kept their bins and subscribed where we are, but I know of a couple who are sharing by agreement. If someone was in difficulties, I'm sure the OP would be happy to come to an arrangement if asked. People just need to show a bit of basic manners. I think you're safe there, unless they change the law. Councils have a statutory duty and legal obligation to remove residential waste including recycling without separate charge (i.e. within council tax). It's only because garden waste is specifically listed as an additional service in the relevant regs that the Council is able to charge for this.
  3. They definitely had a power/fridge issue a while back which meant they had to throw away a large amount of raw ingredients (although I think that was earlier than July), but not sure if that would have affected the bread. +1 for asking them direct on social media - the owner is very active there and seems to be very hot on things like plastic-free packaging, so I'm sure will engage.
  4. The same green truck, staffed by Veolia contractors is now reversing, yes reversing, the wrong way down the bus lane on Lordship Lane opposite the Lordship Estate towards Dulwich Library, picking up bins as they go. The single most stupid piece of driving I?ve seen for a while. And yes people have tried to tell them it?s dangerous but are just being waved round.
  5. DF, what you were told is half right - you can now only buy the bags from Southwark, but once you have bought a set you can then book a street collection of the bags when they are full on the Southwark website (or take them to Devon Street yourself as you mention). What Veolia won't now do is collect paper bags that have been left out if you haven't a) paid for them and b) booked a collection. You don't need to have subscribed to the general service or have a sticker. I'm not sure it's a more efficient system than the old one but it seems to work ok for me so far.
  6. Looks like Eyeful was an American pin up mag in the 40s. Some of the pictures in the links below may be (mildly) not safe for work. https://dangerousminds.net/comments/how_to_train_a_wife_retro_sexist_silliness_from_vintage_girlie_magazine_eye
  7. Has one of your neighbours put up a bird feeder? The only time we?ve ever seen rats regularly running through the garden was when our neighbours did just that - the rat (female and pregnant by the looks of it) was coming several times a day to eat all the seeds and bits knocked off the feeder by the birds. As soon as they got rid of the feeder, the rat disappeared.
  8. You can't delete a thread - you can ask Admin to delete it or you can just edit the test and replace it with "." or similar and save it, so the original wording can't be seen any more.
  9. first mate Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If it exists could someone post a map for the > proposed ED CPZ? I am unable to get onto the link. first mate - I've done a quick stitch together of the maps - it's not the best job but may help. I'll say this, Southwark don't make it easy to work out...
  10. You can recycle them at the Devon Street waste facility - just make sure to delete all your stored settings first.
  11. I've tried a few times over the years to cycle more locally and do more shopping by bike and public transport in the local areas. Buying a pedal-assisted electric bike has been the thing that's swung it for me. I'm not that young and not that fit but it does three main things: * makes it realistic for me to get up Underhill/Dog Kennel with a full pannier; * means I arrive at my destination not a sweaty mess (and no lycra required); and * means I can get away from the front of traffic lights at a speed so that I'm not holding up cars/having cars drive round me or being pushed past by other cyclists. As a result I'm a far more confident and regular cyclist. Appreciate that some cyclists see them as "cheating" and there's obviously a cost involved, but I would definitely recommend getting an electric bike for people who just want to increase the amount of local cycling and commuting they do, regardless of age. E-bikes are much more commonly used on the continent by normal people - not just the elderly or those with restricted mobility.
  12. Two new posters, both created at pretty much the same time, both have made a couple of innocuous but irrelevant comments on other threads, then one resurrects an old thread and the other post spam links. This is about the fourth or fifth time this week (different posters, different threads). It's spam, just a bit more ingeniously done. 13. MM's post reminded me of a point that James Barber raised a few pages ago - what the exact legal basis is for Southwark and other councils charging for collecting garden waste. It took me a while but I have found the piece of legislation that allows them do so this, and it seems pretty clear: It's in Schedule 1, section 4 of The Controlled Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2012 http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2012/811/made
  14. There are a couple of recent "appeal refused" ETA cases in respect of DKH which seem to confirm that a motorist can cross into the bus lane to turn left where the solid white line becomes a broken white line (which is what I always understood). https://londontribunals.org.uk/naslivepws/pwslive/f?p=14952:70::INITIALISE:NO:70:P70_CAS_REFNO,P70_PCN_REFNO,P70_RETURN_PAGE,P70_AST_CODE:1360404,2682954,60,APPEAL&cs=3wx5eAE4xA7T_dYJZNmt3NRX6CSelUwQIDwcPK8nS3m_engr9k6PagflJifcBMNZjeMdXJtjeuF0M3zb-KBgoTA
  15. I would definitely report this to the police - in particular there is a known scam whereby criminals divert bank calls and text messages using a new SIM, so if your side gate was forced and post like a bank account statement was taken, this could be connected. As it's all be reported to the fraud team, you should be protected against that now, but if your mobile stops working for any reason be prepared to get in touch with your bank. https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/alert/fraudsters-are-emptying-bank-accounts-by-diverting-calls-and-text-messages
  16. Callie, photos of the folded bag package attached - basically they are exactly the same bags you used to be able to pick up for free at the libraries. Let me know if you want to see one unfolded. To be fair - the delivery of the bags was super efficient - next day delivery after ordering. However - the package of bags won?t fit through a standard letterbox and it appears they want you to sign for the delivery. Luckily there was someone at home today but there normally wouldn?t be - so not quite sure how that is going to work for those households where everyone is at work during the day.

I ordered some recently, so will post a picture when they arrive. The ?15 includes the cost of collecting them, so nothing more to pay - you still need to book a collection separately and they will only collect from the household that ordered the bags.
  18. If they?ll take over the Grove Tavern, I?m in.
  19. Well it's certainly turning into a great way to spot the "recently registered, only one post with a spam link in it" users.

Maybe because people aren't interested in the dating website you are here to plug? Or because this thread is from 2009. One of those two. +1 for the lounge.

The idea that you implement this sort of service by putting a fully functioning webpage up and then changing it to "beta" and making it non-functional a few hours later is indicative of Southwark's totally half-a**ed approach to this whole system IMO.

Wow, so they are totally trading off the business and reputation of the Palmerston with that menu. That makes me even less inclined to go in, but appreciate you posting.
  23. There's a number of old threads which you may be able to find which discuss the planned demolition - here's one that has some useful links and background. /forum/read.php?5,999444 As I understood it back in 2012/13, the existing structure was found to be too expensive to maintain and renovate, as well as not being fit for modern use, so the decision was taken to retain the entrance way and replace the rest. /forum/read.php?5,999444
  24. The ability to order the paper garden waste sacks (for people like me who have an occasional need for garden waste collection but not enough to need a whole bin) is now up online. 20 sacks for ?15 and there is also a link to book their collection. Obviously haven't tried the collection part yet but have a pile of garden waste that has been piling up so will let you know how I get on. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/garden-waste-collection-subscriptions?chapter=2
  25. You may want to post in the "About This Forum" section if you want the Admin to see. It's a bit easier for the rest of us to follow if we have have one thread per issue, so that every can see the previous inputs/discussion - any reason you can't add your recent post to the old thread and bring it back up to the top of the board? /forum/read.php?5,2041950
