Anyone seen the lost unicorn signs in Melford Rd?
Siduhe replied to Fuschia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Further up the road, there is a "Lost:Crocodile" sign in a similar vein... -
According to someone in BT's security division (who told me a couple of weeks ago there is a spate of incidents in South London at the moment): Open up a BT access point (manhole) or dig down to the cable, cut cable, attach a vehicle to the cable and then drive off to pull it out. He reckons thieves particularly look for recent roadworks that have been filled in because a) it's easier to dig down through the recent tarmac/filler to get to the cables and b) if queried by anyone they can say they're fixing a botch in the previous job.

Would you support a car club space or two on Grove Lane?

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Siduhe replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, if you are in touch with the traffic department, can you ask (in respect of that same stretch of road as Al&Em mentions), if there has been some recent re-phasing of the traffic lights on that stretch? Approximately from the Harvester going towards Forest Hill. Traffic has been really bad for about two weeks and for no obvious reason as once you get past the Tesco garage, the road is clear (this was before they started digging up the junction where the Harvester is). It's made driving in and out of Wood Vale, Melford Road, Overhill and Underhill Roads quite tricky even outside of peak times as the road has been solid and people aren't especially inclined to let you out. Just wondered if it was connected to the appearance of the new sign. -

marcos, have a look here. Been discussed at length and a very poor approach by Thames Water imho... -
I did the Adult Bikability Training offered by Southwark Council via Cycling Instructor Ltd (not sure if they still do this with all the budget cuts). It was fab and a huge boost to my confidence - we focused entirely on dealing with heavy traffic as that was what made me most nervous. If it's the same thing, definitely worth doing.

The UK has no clear legal concept of "fair use" - i.e. the ability to move music from one format to another for your personal use or to take a backup of electronic media. However, since at least 2006 the BPI has publicly stated that no action will be taken against someone who copies CDs they have validly purchased into electronic form for personal use, or converts electronic music into other format. Where a CD is protected by DRM, it is a breach of the licence you have purchased to listen to the music if you break the DRM and take an electronic copy. The act which implements the EU Copyright directive in the UK is The Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003, which includes a section on electronic rights management and extends additional rights to copyright holders if someone advertises or tells someone how to break the DRM, does break the DRM or shares media from which the DRM has been removed. However, this remains entirely a civil matter - the rights holder still has to sue the infringer in a civil court, not a criminal one and certainly not theft - which is a strictly criminal matter. The emphasis of the CRRR 2003 is also very much on people who share media in breach of copyright - rather than on someone who is seeking to use material they have legitimately purchased for their own personal use - no-one has ever been sued for breaking the DRM on a CD or game unless they have also distributed it as far as I can tell. Siduhe (who currently has about 9000 songs in high-bit electronic format, all legally purchased and with the original CDs retained where relevant. I don't condone illegal downloading in any form, but I very much espouse the "fair use" concept for music I have purchased.)

Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket - do we want one on LL?

Maybe it depends which M&S Food you go to? The one I occasionally use in the City definitely sells fresh (unprepared) meat and fish and veg, along with rice, pasta and other staples, not just ready meals. Granted it's not the biggest selection, but does come in handy. -
What are Southwark Councils Priorities (in East Dulwich)

We had this earlier - you may need to clear the snow off your dish, esp the receiver (long handled window scraper did the job for us). Been working fine since.

Once you've got it set up, you may also want to check out http://sharemyplaylists.com/ which is a site of Spotify playlists that other people have put together and published. I'm not totally familiar with the Spotify implementation on Sonos, but you probably need to download the Spotify client to a PC/laptop, use ShareMyPlaylist to load the playlists you fancy into the PC/laptop client and, providing you have the same login for Sonos and the PC client, it should transfer across to the Sonos player. That's how it works on my Squeezeboxes anyway. I think it's a great way to find new stuff via Spotify - there's so much stuff on there it's easy to miss the good stuff.

A few of mine have already been mentioned, but of those which haven't: Close second and third, simply for the way they sound, are "termagant" and "defenestration"; Top of the list is probably "mellifluous" both for sound and meaning.

new gates for Camberwell Cemetery
Siduhe replied to tamblynhirst's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The original application for funding and planning permission for the gates was made a while ago - maybe 2 years for the funding and about a year ago for the planning application? The wooden gate was a temporary solution. I think they're great. As one of the consultees, I felt a lot of thought had gone into the proposal - including being sensitive about potential unmarked graves in the area of the gates and increased foot traffic over them. -
Yes, quite a bit. I use an alternative system (Squeezeboxes) and both have pros and cons. Sonos is very much more plug and play and has a proprietary wireless system (so you don't tend to have problems getting it to play nicely with your existing wireless network). The remote is a thing of beauty and it deals with "zones" very well (i.e. if you have more than one player you can "zone" your house). On the down side, it's more limited in terms of advanced functionality than the Squeezeboxes, less configurable and quite a bit more expensive. There's a big user community of Squeezeboxers and the software is open source, so lots of plugins and fun things which you don't get with Sonos. Sonos also used not to support some of the more recent lossless codecs like FLAC, but has done a fair bit to catch up recently. If you're not that inclined to tinker with your setup that much and can afford it, it's a great option. HTH

My understanding is that obligations relating to provisions about benefits under employees' occupational pension schemes do not transfer under TUPE. However, there are broadly equivilent provisions under the Pensions Act 2004 (sections 257 and 258). Basically, if the previous employer provided a pension scheme then the new employer has to provide some form of pension arrangement for employees who were eligible for, or members of the old employer's scheme. It doesn't have to be the same arrangement but has to meet a minimum standard under the Pensions Act. Again, it's very fact specific and you may need specialist advice from a union or solicitor - depending on where your pension arrangements sit and how they are organised, you may not be covered by the Pension Act provisions.

lordship lane post office 20 mins

I use the same facility on Tudor Street...it is a bit odd when you first try it, but fine for basic postage when everything is working. -
I recently treated my better half to dinner at Galvin La Chapelle. Definitely only for high days and holidays at those prices but beautiful food in a fantastic setting. The overall experience topped off by the wonderful, foodie staff who couldn't have been more helpful or charming - including giving us a great table but with a view of the pass so he could see into the kitchen (which he loved).

We got a 40 bus home tonight and had the bizarre situation where all the 40 buses were being stopped at Goose Green due to "Health and Safety concerns" (yes, really) whilst the 176 and the 185 were merrily travelling up Lordship Lane along the same route.
