Not surprised to hear this - the 63 bus I got on this morning at the FHT found going down the hill fairly difficult at 8am, and we gently drifted into the right hand lane (no oncoming traffic) before the driver got traction back by the church

If only this were a joke, my secretary has just asked if she can go at 2pm as she's worried about her journey home...to Orpington...
  3. Tate Modern - easy to get to from ED - if it goes well, walk down the South Bank, browse the shops in Oxo Tower or the secondhand book stalls - lots of nice places for a glass of wine or a bite to eat at the end?
  4. HonaloochieB Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Keep to the diversion I say it's quicker most > mornings. I have to say, I think the current diversion where buses only go one way down Rye Lane is a massive improvement. Bit more of a walk to PR station, and getting a double decker bus under the bridge on Consort Road needs to be done carefully, but traffic is just so much more freeflowing...
  5. The problem with putting a CPZ just around the station area is that it just pushes the problem back a few streets - I suppose that was the original thinking. What I'm still not clear on is whether anyone has demonstrated to a reasonable degree that the problem is being caused by non-residents. There have been a few comments that parking clears up early evening, but also some people reporting that it doesn't. At the same time I've seen articles in the press that say people are avoiding the massive increases to suburban rail fares by driving to places like ED and then getting on the train where fares are comparatively cheaper. If the squeeze on parking is being caused by non-residents parking during commuting hours, I can see where a limited CPZ (not at the weekends and only 12-2 weekdays might help). However, if it's caused as much by increased popularity of the area to live, then it won't. Does the Council do any kind of research specifically on this aspect? If so, how is it carried out?
  6. There's lots about it on the SA site and on Southwark planning - it is being retained by the SA and will remain a training and education facility. They are updating a lot of the existing accommodation (disabled access etc) and adding more. I thought the existing traffic works on that bit of Denmark Hill were part of the long process of replacing water/gas/electricity services which have been ongoing in SE22 for what seems like forever? Haven't looked too closely however. http://www1.salvationarmy.org.uk/uki/www_uki.nsf/vw-dynamic-index/646D93957B28B4068025754E0043547C?Opendocument http://planningonline.southwarksites.com/planningonline2/AcolNetCGI.exe?ACTION=UNWRAP&RIPNAME=Root.PgeResultDetail&TheSystemkey=9530610
  7. I'm in the same boat PGC and annaj. On my shiny new home laptop it all looks fine (Windows 7 and Firefox) but at work (ancient desktop, running XP and Firefox) everything is ranged right and no sign of the ads.

I think I posted this at the time, but I still think it was particularly sneaky of TFL to carry out the survey of the 63 and 363 buses on the Tuesday after a Bank Holiday and then to rely on the results to suggest these routes were not likely to carry sufficient extra users to need changing.
  10. I wondered the same when I saw the curtains had gone up - one of the windows at the top of the building was wide open (unusual) for several days previously. Then I saw they had put a satellite dish up and assumed they must be legitimate tenants (although Mr Siduhe is sceptical - apparently squatters organise this kind of thing as well). I've never understood why the owner doesn't just rent the flats out on short term contracts at a low rent. Even if he's losing money, he wouldn't be losing as much as he is with it empty or squatted and it would be easier to rent to others with a few people in it, notwithstanding the poor design.
  11. Just to echo what others have said, I think it's really important to make sure it ends up being "your" wedding. We kept ours small (30 people) but glam, and described it a "lunch party with a wedding attached" (4 hours at a nice restaurant in town, only 20 mins of which was the actual wedding bit). It was pretty stress free and everyone had a great time, us included. It helps if you're paying for it yourself, as we were, and that neither set of parents are the type to get offended or upset that we didn't involve them in the organisation. The key bit for us was that every guest was someone we just couldn't imagine not being at our wedding - there were lots of other people it would have been nice to invite, but we couldn't afford it, and just making that decision cut out a whole layer of agony (work colleagues, more distant family, people who invited us to their own wedding etc). And you know what, the people we couldn't invite were just fine about it (I think!).
  12. jamma - I was involved in something just like this when I lived in SE1 for three years. We were lucky enough to have a few very experienced cider makers otherwise the whole thing wouldn't have worked half as well - also lots of people (like me) who were enthusiastic but totally unskilled. Not sure if it is still going, but if there's serious interest, can see who from that group is still around. Certainly have contacts for press hire and stuff like that. A lot depends on the apple variety from memory - we ended up driving to the west country to pick up a whole load of cider apples to balance out the locally grown ones. http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/1267
  13. James, would be very interested in finding out about whether we (College Ward) can co-mingle glass/tins/plastics and paper or whether paper still needs to be separated out. If so, we would definitely swap to using a single blue bin rather than a selection of blue crates and blue bags.
  14. Not LL/NX, but there were builders clearing out the shop on the corner of Forest Hill Road and Dunstans Road (next to William Hill) this morning. That shop's been empty for ages, so will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens on the site.
  15. According to National Rail, there are direct trains from Victoria to Nunhead Rail at 22:43, 23:13 and 23:43 today - fairly short walk to the cemetery from there. Are these services not running for some reason, or am I reading the timetable wrong?
  16. Large slate chips over the top of your flower beds stop squirrels digging them up and are supposed to discourage cats from using them as a toilet too - B&Q stock them in various colours.
  17. I recently picked up a Samsung R530 on offer at ?350 - nothing fancy, graphics card isn't up to gaming, but has everything you list and more than fine for general use. Even at full price it would just under your budget. The red one has more cred than the standard silver and it runs Windows 7 Home Premium (which is a huge improvement on Vista).
  18. Just a word of warning in case the important looking letter is from a Court or bailiffs. We have a (very tedious) ongoing battle with a firm of bailiffs who are trying to collect a significant Court fine from someone who gave a fake address (ours) to the Police or Court. They know he doesn't live at our house and they have no right to enter our home, but that doesn't stop them from turning up and threatening to do so on a regular basis. So, I would definitely return the letter (unopened, if there's a return address) to sender with a clear letter from you saying you've not heard of this person and he doesn't live at your house, and keep a copy of it.
  19. Isn't the reason the garden waste collections (brown bin) are moving to weekly, because the food waste is going to be stored in the brown bins as well? So there is a planned weekly collection of biodegradable food/kitchen/garden waste and recyclables, and all remaining waste is collected fortnightly. I hadn't thought about things like nappies though - good point - can't see too many people being happy with a fortnightly collection of those!
  20. I very much agree with Vickster - when the lights are against the Forest Hill Road traffic, a few cars may cross out of the side roads. More often than not outside of rush hour, nothing comes out of the side roads and the Forest Hill Road traffic backs up. There needs to be a pedestrian crossing of some sort near the surgery - surely, this would allow traffic to flow out from the side roads when activated? I catch the 63 bus regularly to and from work and the main impact of the lights is to back up traffic on Forest Hill Road, for little corresponding benefit that I can see. The lights should go.

Is this the thread you mean? http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?25,521014,521014#msg-521014 My understanding is that the Admin will normally only take this kind of action where he has been able to verify that a person using different EDF accounts or the same computer or core email account (both of which can be traced) has posted fake recommendations for their own business (which is also illegal). If you ever did decide to take action, that evidence would have to be produced. Generally, Trading Standards take a much dimmer view of that kind of behaviour than they do of privately run, not-for-profit forums like this taking a view on who they will and won't allow to post. I also think you will find you've just advertised this issue well beyond where it would have been before your two posts.
  23. Whilst I remain of the view this is just one more wind up, Karrie's point about codes of ethics is an interesting one. The SPJ Code for example includes: Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources? reliability Avoid undercover or other surreptitious methods of gathering information except when traditional open methods will not yield information vital to the public. The problem with relying on postings on an internet message board is that it's difficult to do the first three of these, and I'm not sure that putting up fake postings to monitor reaction meets the fourth requirement either.
  24. This is borrowed but always makes me smile (and remains appropriate here, notwithstanding the big "reveal" imho)... http://madison.fastmail.co.uk/god-kills-kitten-troll.jpg

Yup - I stopped at these on Tuesday with two other cars in front of me, and the joker behind me pulled out and ran the [very red] lights.
