  1. This website is good for searching all available care homes. Care homes From various elderly relatives & friends' elderly relatives: The Hill House, Sydenham Hill. In the home for over a year & seems to be receiving very good care. Peartree Nursing Home Sydenham Road I've only visited it once from what I could see the care was good, very clean and lots of activities. Castlebar Sydenham Hill - did have a bad reputation but I have heard it has improved The Elms Barry Road. This is a church (Baptist) home so they take residents from a christian background only. Very good care.
  2. From Southern's website - might explain the fewer carriages Updated 7 December 10:00hrs We are running a normal weekday timetable today, Tuesday 7 December. However, we are sorry that some trains will have fewer coaches than normal this week as some coaches were damaged in last week's snow. Our engineers are working hard to get all our trains back in service as soon as possible. For details of any cancellations and short-formed trains, please see our live running pages or journey check.
  3. Just back from Sainsburys. East Dulwich Station is still closed - they've put the Southwark bins in the entrances to stop people going up to the platforms. A 40 & 176 were parked facing south at the bus stop end of Ondine when I set out but are now gone & coming home I saw a 40 picking up passengers at the station stop (going into town) virtually empty. Better under foot than yesterday, more snow & slush, less ice
  4. Was on the same 7.05 delayed to 7.20 as others. When I looked at the departures board at London Bridge there didn't appear to be much moving. Am now in office overlooking railway lines and there are a few trains coming in & out but only a few. I guess bus may be the best bet as traffic seems light.
  5. There was a whole bunch of the salesmen (about 8) on the train from London Bridge yesterday early afternoon. They got off at Peckham Rye. Their leader was going through how wonderful the company was & how much they would all be earning, I did hear mention of talk talk. They were quite nauseating with their macho posturing. I had a salesman at my door a couple of months ago with the same pitch of had I got the leaflet, I shouldn't be paying for broadband because of an exchange upgrade etc etc. A very strange aggressive sales technique. They have obviously sent out new batch of freshly trained sales people.

Your neighbours will have a smallish brown bin because there house is divided into flats. It seems Southwark, fairly sensibly, have delivered just bags to houses that are not divided into flats and have a large brown garden bin. So food waste can go into the large brown bin. Where houses are divided into flats or where there is no large brown bin they have left a small brown bin for food waste. The kitchen caddy is about half the size of the small brown bin and does have to be ordered.
  7. As I said I think you're normally ok with furniture & white goods although if ordering on the internet always check the delivery information and also the terms & conditions. I've found that most companies selling, for example, flooring (tiles, wooden floors etc) only offer kerbside delivery and this is sometimes hidden in the terms and conditions. I used Waterloo Plumbing for my bathroom and they were great, storing all the items until I needed them (not much room in a one bedroom flat for a bath, toilet and sink).
  8. I think it's normally okay with furniture but I'm coming across the dreaded 'kerbside' with things like flooring and tiles so definitely something to look out for when doing a refurb.
  9. Yes thanks GG that's what I'm doing but unfortunately it now seems the norm with most companies. I know it's an insurance/cost issue but that doesn't help get the items in my home! I will continue searching for a company with a bit better customer service. Funnily enough I had the opposite experience with Ikea a couple of years ago when a 2 man team happily unloaded a whole kitchen and stacked it all neatly exactly where I wanted it.
  10. What's with this new 'delivery to kerbside'. Why when I want to order something large/heavy/awkward do I have to accept 'We only deliver to kerbside, our drivers are not insured to enter your premises'. Is this the usual 'elf & safety rubbish. I can just about accept that 'delivery will be between 8am to 6pm', I'm lucky I can work from home but how am I meant to have a couple of strong persons on hand ready to leap into action just when the uninsured nondelivery person arrives. When I order goods I give my house address not kerbside of my house. This is discrimination against the elderly and lone home dwellers and I blame the internet (& I'm only half joking!)
  11. Don't know about the East Dulwich one but Peckham has started staying open to 8pm on Wednesdays.
  12. A map of Southwark's constituencies, wards, polling districts and polling stations is now on the Southwark website. Consitiuency map
  13. Got a train at 7:01 - not sure if it was the 7:03 early or a late train as I just managed to catch it. At London Bridge it says all Southern & South Eastern trains into London Bridge suspended due to fire between South Bermondsey & London Bridge. But from my office overlooking the railway lines into London Bridge I can see some quite a few trains coming in on the East Dulwich side (platforms 12-16)
  14. There's been a flock (20+) of fieldfare in the crab apple tree in my garden (Ondine Road) since sunrise. Think the tree will be stripped bare by the end of the day.
  15. Home after getting the 16:03? from London Bridge to East Dulwich. Trains all seem to be running fine and even better the ramp down from East Dulwich station was clear. Thanks Barry!
  16. Jeremy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Barry - please tell me where on the southern > website we can see updates on the ED - London > Bridge routes. Southern site seems to be down at the moment and even when working isn't giving live info. National Rail site was up a few mins ago and was giving live info National Rail
  17. Just got into work at London Bridge. The 7:14 from East Dulwich was spot on time and looked like the next few trains would be okay. The worst part was the pavements. Very icy outside the station and garden centre. The ramp up to the station wasn't too bad. Tried to look up my trains on Southern website before I left but came up with an apology that there were no live train times. Three no 40 buses waiting on Grove Vale, not sure why as Dog Kennel Hill looked fine. Saw a 185 coming down the hill.
  18. Just home on the 15:33 from London Bridge. More crowded than usual but trains appear to be running fine. The most dangerous part was the steep path down from the platform. One man fell over twice so do be careful! Didn't see any buses and traffic on Grove Vale backed up to Kwik Fit with some spinning wheels.
  19. From Southwark Fire in Camberwell - January 6 Update - January 6 9am There has been a fire in Camberwell overnight. The London Fire Brigade was called at 0228 and fifteen fire engines, four aerial appliances and around 75 firefighters tackled the blaze in a building under construction on Camberwell Station Road in Camberwell. A substantial part of the building (four storeys) was alight at one stage. There are no reported injuries or fatalities and the fire is now under control. As a precaution around 150 people living nearby, including Mitcham House, were evacuated to a rest centre established in Flodden Road. The Red Cross were there with council officers to provide food, drinks and support. All residents have now been allowed back to their homes. There does not appear to be any damage to residential properties close to the site, but some nearby business premises do appear to have been affected. There was also some disruption to local transport but the bus depot and train lines are now running. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage and police have started their investigation.
  20. Got the 7:03 into London Bridge this morning which was on time. Noticed the 7:14 was going to be late. Saw a couple of buses on Grove Vale so I guess they were getting up Dog Kennel Hill, the main roads seemed clear.
  21. The latest from Southwark Fire in Peckham - Update at 2pm, Thursday November 26 The fire brigade were called at 0426 this morning to a major fire in Peckham. Over 125 fire fighters attended the scene which started in a building site on a private residential housing development in Sumner Rd. Because of the weather conditions it appears that the fire then spread to two adjacent residential blocks, 1-46 Carisbrooke Gardens (managed by a tenants? management organisation) on the Willowbrook Estate and nearby 1-10 Oak Court, a mixed development of council and housing association homes. A large number of people were evacuated and there are ten reported casualties, with most suffering the effects of smoke inhalation, although none are said to be seriously hurt and there no reported fatalities. The fire is currently being damped down. The two blocks have been substantially damaged by fire and the council is making arrangements for emergency accommodation for those who are unable to return to their homes this evening. The remaining part of Oak Court is being inspected to see if other residents can return. It is hoped that residents who have had to leave other nearby properties will be allowed to return at 1pm. The Health and Safety Executive, Police, London Fire Brigade and the council's building control are all on site carrying out their inspections. In relation to the site where the fire started, planning permission approved on appeal in 2005 following refusal by the Council on the basis of loss of community facilities. The development is for 39 housing units. The developers chose to use approved inspectors for dealing with the building regulations. Rest centre A rest centre was initially established by the council at the Elephant and Castle leisure centre, although local community groups have also opened their doors to assist with those who have had to leave their homes. There are currently around 260 residents in the different locations. All of these different locations are being closed at 2pm today as a new, and the only, rest centre is being opened at 1.30pm at the Damilola Taylor Centre at 1 East Surrey Grove, London, SE15 6DR, which is closer to people's homes. Residents currently at all other venues are being transferred to the Damilola Taylor Centre by Transport for London. The Red Cross and representatives from the health PCT will also be hand at the Damilola Taylor Centre to offer their support. The council's wardens are also compiling a list of displaced residents. Donations We have already received generous calls from the public offering their support and donation boxes are being made available in all one stop shops and the Peckham and Walworth cash offices. Those wishing to donate other items, such as clothes and toys, can take them to the Damilola Taylor centre. Helpline There is a dedicated help phone line for affected residents to call for assistance - 0207 939 3670. Chief Executive, Annie Shepperd, said: "Southwark Council officers are working with the fire, police and ambulance services at the scene of the major fire in Peckham. A rest centre has been established to take those who have had to leave their homes to ensure their needs are met. We will be making an assessment of the damage to the blocks as soon as we can gain access to buildings. We will be advising residents about the damage to their homes and we are monitoring the situation very closely. Our priority is to support those people who have had to leave their homes this morning as many are understandably shocked and distressed. We are grateful to the emergency services for their swift response and the brave fire fighters who tackled this serious fire. We understand that because the fire started on a building site, that this incident will also be investigated by the Health and Safety Executive."
  22. Just back from a weekend in New York where I was lucky enough to attend two of the best concerts Madison Square Gardens has ever seen. Bruce Springsteen performed the whole of 'The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle' on Saturday night and the whole of 'The River' on Sunday night. In over 30 years of concert going not seen anything to match the energy & intensity of those two nights. E Street Shuffle
  23. Revenues & Benefits (including council tax collection) has been outsourced to Liberata so I imagine that is one of their offices. They also run the one stop shops that are located in the borough where in theory you can go and ask questions and if you're very lucky get answers!
  24. > > > I would also be interested in knowing what time > the bin collections end each day - isn't it a > matter of the existing crew finishing a bit later > rather than an additional lorry being laid on? > I've never seen any collections happening in the > afternoon. > > Thanks I don't know how it works but I would imagine the dust carts have to finish their collections in time to get to wherever they unload. I guess they may have set times for dropping off the waste.
