Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible
poppet27 replied to Grotty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Agree, and what are agents actually doing for their fee? If properties are selling themselves, an estate agent's life must be a walk in the park in the current climate. -

My bad - by 'the super rich' I did mean those with 6 figure incomes/ can buy a ?1m property. I guess that's not so shocking in London anymore. (Off to smash open my piggy bank and move to Weston Super mare) -

So what will East Dulwich et al look like in 4 years? Those who bought when ED was less chi-chi & have stayed First time buyers who are over stretched on their mortgages? And the super rich who don't mind paying over the odds. -

I'm no economist but the behaviour feels like mass hysteria, akin to the gold rush. Surely the lack of supply and high demand has to plateau at some point. I have no need to move (yet) so I'm watching the hysteria from afar but it does strike me that this isn't sustainable. Or maybe it's because I have friends who went into sealed bids and paid ?19,000 over asking price because they were 'scared not to'. Insane -

Sorry to reopen this wound. Just sitting with the Sunday papers which are now saying prices are likely to be up 8% again this year. What do you all make of this? Is now the time to pack up the rugrat and the dog and move, lest we're not able to ever again? And are people in East Dulwich *really* paying those crazy-assed prices that I see in the estate agent windows? -
That's a great post. Overhead a few conversations recently with people moaning about kings (particularly ante natal care), including complaining is not as good as private (!) I do think NHS staff get a hard time from joe public, yet are some of the most dedicated selfless people work for them. Danny Boyle got it right!

Best travel route to Goodge Street at rush hour?
poppet27 replied to poppet27's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks all. Uncleglen - in my view, the tfl journey planner is not always the most intuitive, and doesn't match up to peoples' own experiences, eg reliability of lines like Thameslink. I will be attempting the journey on 2nd so thanks for all your help. -

I have a travel card so not fussed about how much it costs. The quicker the better! *Sigh* I wish ED had a tube.. -

Da Silva - and you didn't get bus sick? I was worried that the bus would just get stuck in traffic. Louise C - Oddly, Google Maps is now telling me to go on the 185/176 to Waterloo then hop on the Northern line. Is there a reason you preferred Victoria? Thanks so much! -
Woah, yes! Same thing happened to us last week, also on Underhill Road. I will PM you..

My lawn is in full sun but suffers from moss creeping in from all sides. We even pulled it out last year and resowed with grass seed, but this year it's back again. The soil at the borders is also really poor: pale in colour, terrible at retaining water and only daffodils will grow. The thing I can't understand is why the lawn also suffers from desertification in summer. Huge crevasses appear across the middle and must be 8cm deep. I have ordered a soil pH testing kit but any green fingered advice welcome!

Hello Has anyone been to either the Rafts and Rascals session and/or the Parent & Toddler session at East Dulwich leisure centre? I'd like to take my 3 year old to the leisure centre next week. She has some experience of swimming and splashing and whereas I don't envisage a formal lesson (I'd rather it be fun), neither do I want her trampled on by older kids. Thanks

I just went past Camberwell Old Cemetery on Underhill Road and noticed significantly fewer trees. What on earth has happened? It used to be dense, now you can see right into the cemetery. I thought Southwark Council had implied tree felling wasn't to be done without consultation/ for some time/ not heavy handed?! Very, very sad loss of further green spaces and habitat.

Suspicous Person in Underhill Road - 640am

Please, please report this to 101. I seem to recall someone posting on here about a person dressed as a Virgin contractor peering through his/ her window then becoming really aggressive when confronted. -
Thank you - incident near Actress this evening

Well said James. You often appear to be a scapegoat, and unfairly so. I agree that the community should continue to be helpful and look out for each other, and please report crimes, even if you *think* that nothing will be done. -
Hello Just logged in to see a spate of posts about terrible crimes in ED! It makes me so mad that our only police station has closed down, and I'm wondering what the best course of action is to at least raise our concerns. It's all very well saying 'no point..' but it's the same principle with voting: even if you think your vote doesn't count, nothing would ever be changed. Any ideas? Write to Ms Harman? Southwark? A petition?

I agree with Dulwich Fox. Please, pleae report these things to the Police, even if you think they won't do anything. It's important the they are recording the number of crimes. I remember a poster a few weeks back who said she was threatened and followed/ chased on Forest Hill Road one evening. Are they all isolated incidents? Who knows. But vital that they are being recorded.

Old Moo Too, Sew East Dulwich Shop 45 Lordship Lane
poppet27 replied to IanSE22's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As a relative newcomer to East Dulwich (well, a year), I wonder if the reason may be more simple: I for one had no idea what Sew East Dulwich sold. Maybe one argument is some of LL's shops don't fill any consumer need. I often wonder what that colour me happy shop is actually selling/ doing, and the one that seems to sell patterned lampshades. I don't say this because I enjoy seeing people fail, but Ms Portas herself would urge shopkeepers to let people know what you are actually selling! Only then can you exploit latent demand and increase footfall. I pray that it won't be another estate agent/ coffee shop/ betting shop/ metro supermarket/ Indian restaurant. Failing an independent trader, a Boots wouldn't be a bad idea. Space NK sounds nice but the demographics don't seem to fit in my lay opinion. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
poppet27 replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi James Apologies if this has already been covered, but I am aghast at the proposed tree felling in Camberwell Old Cemetery. Is no tree safe in Southwark? I live near there and have seen hedgehogs, woodpeckers and finches - I can't see the justification for loss of habitat, the environment (in a very polluted borough) as well as ruining the view for the houses on Underhill and Overhill Roads. Can anything be done to oppose this? -
A fellow with a similar description let his black and white border collie enjoy his morning poo this morning on the Rye, much to the disgust of the passengers on the 363, who got a full view whilst the bus was stationary. Shame on you.

Call me crazy, but has anyone else noticed a strong smell of dog poop coming from Honor Oak Mansions on Underhill Rd? I'm sure the lovely residents are not contributing to E.D's unfortunate image of dog sh*t capital of London, so wondered if it was a plant. It smells so bad I have to cross the street. (Slow news day)..

Yes, I live right across from said trees and we haven't received so much as a letter or flyer from Southwark about this. Good to feel part of the community ...
