20 MPH Limit Lordship Lane
James Barber replied to Earl Aelfheah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi P68, A set of posts had talked about speeding cars close to Plough Lane. I've poijnted out the nearest traffic count to that location where many would be breaking or accelerating due to the traffic lights. Indeed the 20mph proposals are further north. Hi Dapacouly, The worst junction along there for recorded crashes is Lordship Lane with Heber Road. Mostly pedestrians crossing the road to/from the bus stop I'd guess. BUT by far the highest number of collissions and crashes are between Melbourne Grove and Goose Green. -
The key is to keep a noise diary and engage Southwarks Noise Team. Renata kindly provided a cut and paste of the Southwark Noise page which explains what noise officers expect from residents to avoid their involvement: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/412/noise_problems/377/be_a_considerate_neighbour " Be a considerate neighbour Advice on how to keep your noise levels low at home Remember that neighbours sharing party walls, floors and ceilings tend to be worst affected by noise, and that noise can cause problems depending on: ?how loud it is ?how long it lasts ?how often it occurs ?the time of day it happens. Late night party goers ?If you're having a party or barbecue, remember to warn your neighbours in advance and tell them what time it will finish. ?Keep the music turned down low and don't stand outside on balconies or in gardens late at night. ?Ask your guests to go home quietly. Noise outside ?Don't operate noisy appliances or equipment such as lawn mowers or power tools late at night or early in the morning. ?If you're playing music outside, try to keep it at a level that cannot be heard outside your boundary. ?Make sure your children don't cause too much noise, especially by kicking balls against the neighbour's walls. ?If you have a marquee, remember that it has no sound insulation and all the noise you make inside will be heard outside. Radios, stereos, TVs and musical instruments ?Keep the volume as low as possible and if you have bass control on your stereo make sure it's turned right down. ?Late at night you should use headphones or listen to music on a personal stereo. ?If you play a musical instrument avoid practicing early in the morning or late evening/night. ?If the instrument has an amplifier, turn the volume down or preferably use headphones. Household repairs and improvements ?Let your neighbours know beforehand if you are carrying out potentially noisy operations, using power tools or working on party walls or floors. ?Carry out noisy operations during the day keeping the evening for less noisy work such as painting and decorating. ?Don't leave DIY equipment running - switch it off when not being used. ?Remember that hired equipment, e.g. mixers, generators are often more powerful and noisier than DIY versions. ?Use hand tools wherever possible and complete the work as quickly as you can. Domestic appliances ?Noisy appliances such as washing machines, spin dryers, freezers and fridges should not be situated next to party walls. ?Washing machines and spin dryers should stand on a solid floor or placed on a carpet or rubber mat to reduce vibration. ?Don't operate noisy appliances late at night or early in the morning. Vehicles and repairs ?Try to do noisy repairs during the day (avoid Sundays) and if possible carry out work in a garage. ?Don't rev the engine excessively and keep in-car music levels down and the windows closed. ?Remember to close doors quietly and use horns only in emergencies. Dogs ?Don't let your dog bark or whine for long periods or leave it alone. ?If your dog barks constantly when left alone or disturbed keep it indoors. ?If your dog still barks when indoors make arrangements to leave it with a neighbour or friend or get someone to call in. ?Leave its' favourite toy or put the radio on at a very low volume. ?If it's a real problem consult your vet for advice about training. Hi KalamityKel, You do use unusual language to make such a point. Huge amount of angst for and against M&S arriving and the planning applicationactually submitted. Officers told me and emailed other residents that the application would be refused. None of those communications had embargoes and I've never seen such a decision take so very long to be recorded on the Southwark Planning portal. We differ. I think I've been reasonable and measured. You think I've jumped the gun by telling people news officers have told me and other residents in realteively timely manner - funnily enough I delayed by a week as I was on holiday. -

Traffic surveys have been undertaken on Lordship Lane between its junctions with Barry Road and Friern Road. http://maps.southwark.gov.uk/connect/index.jsp?tooltip=yes Sept 2012 southbound mean av. 26.1mph speed 85th precentile 31.3mph 10,044 vehicles per day on averahge. Northbound 24.9mph mean av. 30.9mph 85th percentile 8,495 vehicles per day. Very similar data from traffic counts Sept 2010 and Sept 2011. So it is entirely likely that proportion as suggested will be travelling at 40mph or more. -

Hi EDlove, Yes it does look much better. And yes I'm hopeful they'll now stick to a proper litter picking regime on the Network Rail land but have chased again for proper details of the proposed ongoing solution. -

Hi first mate, The response I've had is that the officer concerned was redirected to more pressing work for a booked committee and that they expect it to be logged on the website early next week. I'm not holding my breath. -

Hi KalamtyKal, I was emailed that a decision had been taken and I reported it. I've never experienced such slow Southwark planning portal update. Sorry but I can't second guess when officers will complete the processes they have to follow. If you ever think a councillor has leaked something then report them/me to Southwark Council monitoring officer. I can assure you yet again that I've not leaked anything. hi First Mate, I'll chase again for the M&S decision to be formally logged on the website. I've never had this experience before and sorry for the angst its causing you, me and others. Hi tiddles, This does seems bizarre. And no I've not had an officer explanation yet. What's particularly frustrating is that resources are tight and other trees desperately need trimming having been left for many years and causing a piblic nuisance. -
One way streets usually result in faster traffic. Faster traffic is often a deterrent to people cycling and walking. So the aim of reverting to two way operation is in my opinion good - assuming encouraging walking and cycling is good. When I'm cycling I avoid the area even though it avoids Dog Kennel Hill. So I rarely pass Bellenden shops. The current roads to me a confident cyclists feels dangerous. But I don't live on these streets and it does soundalike the consultation hasn't been done well. So how would people make that area safer and calm traffic and ideally remove one way streets?

Hi fazer71, I popped along and spotted about 6 puddles in 15m stretch. Council officers have visited and assured me it will be on next year maintenace schedule. Many thanks for pointing this out. Hi fazer71, It clearly includes lots and lots of property overheads unrelated to East Dulwich. It's probably a divison of thE Met Property divison fixed cost structure. I think the driver is more the land sale opportunity. I'll PM you some other bits and pieces. -

Hi Fazer71, Somehow the police think East Dulwich station costs them ?277,000 to run in electricity, gas bills. I've been the. It's not that hot. The good thing about a local Police base is that officers minimise travel time - minutes to walk to a local area needing help or advice. But the Boris plan is to base our local officers in Camberwell Police station. As they won't have their own vehicles they'll reach us via buses. They'll be going a frying by bus. So much of their time will be spent unproductively. That isn't a good use of our tax payers money. Cross party Dulwich councillors are supporting a local interim police base at the Dulwich Hospital gatehouse. This looks increasingly likely to happen. The East Dulwich councillors eventually hope a permanent police station will be built on part of the current olive station when it's replaced. -
Fire at Elephant and Castle
James Barber replied to ironjawcannon's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ltest communication I've recieved " Update at 1120am The fire is still burning and the fire brigade remain in control of the whole complex, including the library. As such, no council officers have been able to enter any of the premises. The council's building control is currently on site and the insurers are engaged. Wardens will remain around the site for reassurance purposes. The initial assessment is that the whole building complex, including the library, is likely to be out of action for months. Every attempt will be made to bring services back on line from that building as quickly as possible, but the damage is extensive. Arrangements are already being made for an alternative One Stop Shop to open nearby. Until then, customers are asked to access Peckham or Bermondsey and also use on line services. There is likely to be some disruption to the call centre due to technical equipment and telephone routes within Walworth town hall being affected by the fire. Technicians are working hard with customer services colleagues to minimise any disruption. The library is closed and is likely to remain so for some months. This is because of expected water damage in the basement and also because the fire door leads in to a courtyard where there is severe damage from the fire. Again, a full assessment can't be made until council officers gain access. The borough archive is in the basement and there may have been some damage. Again, the full extent won't be known until the council has access. In terms of museum artefacts, there are three galleries and artefacts have been recovered from one by the LFB and taken to nearby council premises for storage. Please note that at any time, only around 1% of the Cuming collection is out on display and it is believed that those items that are in storage should be ok, although there may be water damage. A full assessment will not take place until council officers can gain access. The council has a contract with disaster recovery assistance specialists and that has been activated. Museum staff are currently working from Tooley Street and where the rescued artefacts have gone in to temporary storage. Some staff are understandably very distressed and counselling has been made available and any personal possessions lost in the fire will be replaced. In terms of the cause of the fire, the London Fire Brigade will not begin their investigations until the fire is out. Thank you letters are going to local businesses who were very helpful and supportive of the council's response yesterday. No buses remain on diversion. The building will be made secure once the council is given back control. " -
Boris has decided to close East Dulwich Police station. As part of his changes we'll see far fewer officers in our local Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Those few officers remaining will be based in Camberwell Police station and will spend a high proportion of their time traveling to and from East Dulwich. But this will allow Boris ot pretend Police numbers are high - if spending much of their day unproductively. So the senior Southwark officers saay they have no need for an operational police base on Lordship Lane. Local officers are desperate to keep a local base so they can maximise the time they spend policing.

James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
My understanding is Boris is closing it and very nearly disband all the local Policing teams. That Southwark top Police see no reason why they'd need an operational base localled having largely disbanded local policing Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Extremely depressing and completely avoidable. So Boris will talk about maximising Police numbers but they'll spend much of their days travelling from centrlaised bases and back agian - ie. much more of eahc officers day will be unproductive. -

20 MPH Limit Lordship Lane
James Barber replied to Earl Aelfheah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi P68, The council doens't receive speeding fines. Not sure where you got this incorrect idea from? The survey I was assured shows drivers going faster than 20mph day and night. Not many cyclsits going faster than 20mph and yes some cyclists and car drivers jump red lights. I which I'd prefer to crash with. I agree the lights could work better for everyone - we had asked for zebra crossing but TfL blocked that as we have Puffin crossings because council officers think they're safer than Pelican crossing. Yet to be shown any evidence of this. -
I've asked for re inspections. Getting a zero of 1 star from an inspection means they're very likely to be a health risk to our community. UncleBen. Your comments don't apply when a business gets a zero or 1 star rating. I'd like to have been able to ask for the 2 stars to be reinspected as well which clearly need to be improved but I can't.

Hi DJKQ, The proposal is for 20mph between Goose Green and Melbourne/Whateley Roads. I've never talked at taking it along to the Plough. Average speed cameras do work exceptionally well even in urban areas. Even with stop start normal drivers will still be concerned they don't get a ticket. This then impedes those trying to play the numbers. -

Latest update I've recieved at 17.10. London Fire Brigade have advised Southwark Council that it will be several days before the building is returned to Southwark. My interpretation is that this could mean the Walworth Road is closed or largely closed for several days. Please avoid the area. It's unknown how much fire damage has occurred and will remain uncertain for a day or so.
