  1. Kford is correct. I remember when they were installed, when there were water works going on. Why, if they were meant to be temporary, are they still there? I am sure someone with knowledge of bureaucracy knows which person to email. Can anyone help?
  2. "Train station" Seemingly claustrophic/vertigo-suffering bus passengers who will not budge from the lower deck area between driver and rear door.
  3. On a side point - and this in no way casts aspersion on anyone mentioned in this post - I travel to work very early and amazed at the number of pedestrians and cyclists who don't wear any form of pale-coloured clothing, let alone reflective gear. It is really hard to make them out from inside a vehicle. As for this road, I too have seen speeding coming up to the junctions.
  4. I have written to Helen Hayes MP telling her about the general frustration with transport - especially bus and rail - in and around SE22, and alerted her to this thread. I will forward it to the GLA Transport head, whose name escapes me for now.
  5. That one - the one near the EDT - was vandalised about six months ago, so are you referring to that? I think they managed to fix it when it happened then.
  6. Which is that one? Was it recently?
  7. The recently re-done mural on the large house wall at The Plough's carpark has been vandalised. I let Ingrid B, one of the main organisers of the original Baroque the Streets street art festival, know about it and she says she will fix it.
  8. Rx3 is right: SE transport infrastructure is fair-to-middling at best. I can't see it getting any better what with all the extra (but welcome) housing around Camberwell.
  9. Think the best bet would be TfL, quoting the location.
  10. It's called vocal fry. It really is called that.
  11. Guided bus! Trams get the local politicians salivating because it means that their town too is going to be just like Manchester or Innsbruck or Stockholm, never mind the expense. A guided bus - a bendy-bus with a mini wheel that runs along a high kerb on a dedicated stretch of the highway - are relatively cheap and offer the same kind of frequency and capacity as the much more expensive and fashionable tram.
  12. Bil - I agree with what you say. I do hope that sense is seen. The best we can do is Tweet Boris and/or write to him in a more traditional way as well as lobbying our MPs. If Camberwell were to be reinstated as a Thameslink (or A N Other TOC) station, maybe some services could only stop there and miss out Denmark Hill and vice-versa to try to address overcrowding?
  13. James's remit does not extend as far as Bellenden Road, though he may be able to point you in the right direction. The pavements along LL, opposite the cinema, are forever ponding and ought to be repaired soon, lest another person be injured.
  14. It's a pain and it is likely to continue being a pain, though perhaps not as much if more is done to challenge the perpetrators. Ask the council to spray "Bag it and bin it" signs on the pavement and/or attach signs to lamp posts etc. Also, ring the enviro line (020 7525 2000) to report it and to ask for the bins to be emptied before they fill up and thereby deter owners from doing the right thing. There will always be rude, inconsiderate people so don't expect the problem to disappear. Instead, ask yourself what you could do to make it better and be content with that.
  15. Ban faith schools. If your religion is important to you, teach it at home and/or with the help of your (self-supporting) church/temple etc. Teach religion and faith in schools as part of a curriculum but, please, no more RC/C of E/Muslim faith schools which only serve to underline differences at a state level.
  16. ! I did not know that the blockages I saw were part of the actual design. Oh dear. If it was like that at 0600 goodness knows what it will be like when most people are up and about. I shall avoid till I hear more positive noises.
  17. I was in a car at around 0600 this morning, coming down the New Kent Road. It was slow, adding about ten minutes to the journey even at that early hour.
  18. Would the hostel at the top of Barry Road be of any use: it's not a walk, but a bus ride away and they could well drive to you. If you can't get rid of it I am sure your neighbours would love to have it, even if they may not be in need.
  19. It was a really good programme and part of short series about popular entertainment. You can watch again via iPlayer in marvellous HD: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b06r7xz4/what-a-performance-pioneers-of-popular-entertainment-1-music-hall
  20. Maybe if you (or your family members) have emphysema or asthma or another lung problem you would have a different view?
  21. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200075/pollution/1360/air_pollution/5
  22. Southwark is a smokeless zone, so you can't burn fuel or have bonfires that produce dark smoke. Some people don't know this; others do and ignore it! Plesae don't burn fuel that makes smoke: it's unpleasant for most people and dangerous for some.
  23. Your money would go further in Warsaw or Krakow. The latter is much better known as a destination but Warsaw has an excellent (if reconstructed) Old Town, great transport, Communist history, a museum dedicated to neon signs (yes, really), cheap vodka and great restaurants on a par with the best of London for about 1/3 of the price. The airport is only about 50 minutes on a (60p) bus ride away from the centre.
  24. I like the idea of a "beauty quarter" in some respects. In the way that (in this country) you used to get lots of shops selling the same kinds of things together (which still goes on in some other countries), this may be a way encourage competition and cooperation. However, I also think that there is a real danger of there developing silos based not on product or services but by class, ethnicity, language etc. so I'd say this idea is not a good one.
  25. While I agree that the station must be improved, I can't go along with the idea that it is somehow OK for people to run for a train and not use designated crossing places. I see that the crossing and/or bus stop are not best placed, but it really is incumbent on the individual to ensure they are crossing safely, even if that means they may miss a train. Way too many people - including mothers with children in their arms/on their backs/in buggies - dash across roads seemingly with a death wish. And as for pedestrian visibility at night, gah......!
