I hope Forest Hill Road finally turns that corner and ends up more like this parade. The closure of the William Hill and the laundry and now the French cafe isn't doing it any favours.

Sunray Gardens - time for a spruce up?
Nigello replied to Afternoontea71's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, Is Rebecca the person to talk to re overgrown trees on Barry Road (e.g. outside 174 but also all along the road)? The trunks are very thick and when the branches and twigs grow out it can really obstruct the most nimble of folk. -
Bermygirl - agreed, but then I think about whether the person can either afford to or can physically deal with tending their garden. There are some right shockers (like the one on CPR with the blinds that never open) but who's to say whether the owners of such gardens are unable to do the work or simply just CBA.

Does anybody have any idea about what the old laundry, former William Hill and ex French cafe on Forest Hill Road will become? The laundry has suffered from vandalism recently.

Beautiful tree wrecked in Ulverscroft Road
Nigello replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Whether or not the tree was right to be there, to destroy it - and to leave the remnants blocking the street - is not acceptable. I hope the person will be caught and fined. -
Imagine yourself as an infirm/blind/handicapped person or someone with a pram/naughty child/dog/lots of bags and then think just how far your bush ought to protrude. I think all of them ought to be right back to give as much room as possible to the pedestrian. It's only fair.

You are about to be horrified. Foxtons coming to Rye Lane
Nigello replied to Louisa's topic in The Lounge
Personally, I'm looking forward to a small area of the pavement which won't be an obstacle course of piled up rubbish. Spot on! The lane is long and busy enough for a variety of businesses. -
It's there to be provocative and whilst I get the idea that "this is the centre of the world" etc it shouldn't be an excuse for people to settle for (sometimes) poor transport and (general) overcrowding. A case in point: loads of new houses are going up along Walworth Road and near Camberwell Green (which is good), so will the bus firms be putting on more buses?

Pick it up and throw it back inside. Or, pick it up and put it in your own bin: being gracious can often feel better than being vengeful!

Great idea, Broadbean, but I doubt it will catch on around here. You have only to look at the state of some people's privets/trees etc to show how little some people care about their environment.

You still may have to pay to receive calls on your iPhone in the USA--up to 90p a minute on Tesco Mobile, for example. Wifi is great for FaceTime Audio or Viber etc.

Beer Drinking in the Goose Green Playground
Nigello replied to DearBBC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
DaveR is right. Having a beer while you "supervise" your offspring in an urban kids' playground is naff, sad and potentially dangerous. Can you imagine your chagrin, gentle parent, should your child come a cropper whilst your slightly buzzed and similarly distracted? It'd eat you up. -
Thanks for the update, IngridB. DALeast looks like a good candidate. Is there anything/one local to the area that could be the subject, however obliquely - Enid Blyton or Boris Karloff (born on Forest Hill Road, according to a plaque there) or Phyllis Pearsall of A-Z fame could be a good start. Or what about a portrait of Alleyn, complete with Jacobean ruff: http://www.henslowe-alleyn.org.uk/history/images/pubimg/full/edward_alleyn_portrait.jpg

Peckham Rye - new summertime, new garbage
Nigello replied to Lee Scoresby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Cllr Hamvas, Good to see some action, so thanks for that. Expect to be held to account, though: it's an issue that really (and rightly) cheeses people off. -
Please explain the reasons why we ought to stay in the EU and why getting out would be bad, Loz.

Underhill road - what's it like?
Nigello replied to konradc101's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It is lovely around there. Depending on where you want to get to, I would recommend taking the 63/363 from Forest Hill Road as your gateway Peckham and the station and then to Old/New Kent Roads and Elephant and then Blackfriars etc. It is true that the transport in SE22 and around is not as good as it could be, but by walking and making use of TfL's app etc you'll get the hang of it. -
I disagree. Banning all food and drink - except water or baby milk - would really reduce litter for a start. Cold food can be smelly and offensive as well as hot food. Public transport is a shared, public space; the best way to act in such a space is to adopt neutral behaviour, so no smoking, drinking of alcohol, playing music out loud etc. Such behaviour is civil, respectful and desirable. (I practise what I preach.)

There is no NEED to eat on the go, unless you have a blood sugar problem. There is only DESIRE to do so. Nobody needs to peel an egg and drop the shell on the floor on the 12; nobody needs to scoff fried food on the short distance between London Bridge and Peckham Rye. Long distance trains - the ones that have trolleys and a bar etc. - are the place to eat "on the go". Commuter trips are definitely not.
-
Well, good for trying. I wish more people would do so. Any more examples from the shy, retiring Forumites of tackling litter louts on our (already not that great) public transport in, to and from SE22?
-
Did you say anything at the time? I doubt a petition will work, even though I share your concerns. It is much better to tackle it at source. (I have done it myself, so I am not asking you to do something I haven't done.) Just say to the offender "Please don't do that. Take your rubbish with you." Yeah, you may feel a bit of prat and you may get a bit of abuse but at least you will have done something.
-
So why not challenge them, Lizbot? You are not in the wrong, after all, they are. The council takes vegetation and even provides paper bags and a permanent brown bin so there is no excuse.

Phobic3000 - It might look nice and - to you and others, smell nice - but smoke can really make some people's lives a misery. Those who are sensitive will find even the smoke from a small fire irritating and potentially damaging to their health. I suppose that is why there are laws and rules. Your neighbours may well be understanding, but on the other hand they may also be asthmatic, bronchitic etc.
-
BBQ smoke is usually short lived and less noxious. Perhaps the charcoal briquettes burn more cleanly? In the interests of being a good neighbour and not breaking the law, I wouldn't have any fire (other than a BBQ).
