former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Nigello replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for the bin at CPR bus stop. It was there last week but I only just remembered to post. Now - trees: there are tree pits along Goodrich Road that need replanting, such as near to No 97. -

James, There used to be one at the Crystal Palace Road bus stop but it's no longer there. Shouldn't most well-used stops have a bin, or even two? -
What is replacing the Old Garden Centre??
Nigello replied to guernseyman's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The only way is up, folks. People complain about digging down, people complain about sprawl, so what other way is there to go? Five or six storeys would be completely in keeping with the council flats across the road. The flats where the cinema used to be are pretty tall but not overpowering. -
I recommend the Delaunay at Aldwych. You can book for breakfast/brunch or just turn up and they'll put you in the ante-room (not the cafe at the side).

The best you can do, Alex K, is just do it and hope that your actions will encourage others. That's it - nothing more. This goes for leaf clearing/litter removal/fly-tipping reporting/hedge trimming, but expect to be deprecated as a busy-body by some.

A cab driver I spoke to (black cab) said drivers are in favour of pedestrianisation of Oxford Street because they can get to most places on it via side streets and because it's too full of buses. A hop-on-hop-off free tram or trolley bus would be a good idea, he said, but I am not convinced. I doubt central London (Notting Hill to St Paul's, Euston to Waterloo) could ever become car-free, even on Sundays. Fewer buses at non-peak times would help a great deal in de-clogging the roads, but I'm not sure who would be brave enough to sell this to the public as an improvement.

Lady N, I salute you. I doubt you'll get many acolytes but it's worth a try.

I agree with Mustard. If you're infirm, disabled in some way or even just have a load of bags/dog on a lead/children it'd be annoying and possibly hazardous. What's wrong with common courtesy and thinking of others?

Barry Road, and its parallel road, Friern, sees cars and bikes (motor-) that fair rip along. It's not on, but I do not know what to do to help the situation, save waving maniacally at the perpetrators.

I see the same, and a reluctance to stop at zebra crossings (though thi is not as pronounced as the general speeding).

It's likely the address will already be in "English", by which I really mean in the Latin alphabet which is used to write Chinese in "pinyin" for foreigners (and for youngsters learning Chinese). Eg: Beijing, Shanghai, Renmin Lu (People's Road) etc. There will also be a postal code, so I'd not be too concerned. You could always search for the address in characters, on the university's website for example, and print it out and put it on the envelope too.

Time Out's local award winners in SE22 / SE21

Fowld's is good but small. I don't know how it will cope when the weather is bad and the seats outside are not as inviting as in the summer. I like decaf only, so purists might well not pay attention to my preferences, but Small White Elephant on Choumert Road has good coffee. -
Plant it, tend to it, love it, let others enjoy it, but please trim it!

Trees-trees-trees in East Dulwich
Nigello replied to Lee Scoresby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I would love a mini-copse on the GG roundabout: it's a great idea. There are pits aplenty that need filling: at least three on Goodrich Road and others that I've passed. Which person to lobby? I got trees planted near where I live just by ringing up the council and asking. I think the person in the job would be different, though. -

I find it hard to believe that the junction of Goodrich and Lordship is any less dangerous than that of NX and Lordship. Cars speed down the hill there, not having any crossing or lights between Dulwich Library and Townley Road, and visibility is poor coming out of Goodrich. -
Southwark Council proposals for LL/NthX Rd junction
Nigello replied to maxxi's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Goodrich/LL junction ought to be looked at and improved ahead of NXR. It's really hard to feel comfortable even when creeping out of GR. James, any thoughts? -
I just noticed that the branch of William Hill on Forest Hill Road, next to the launderette, is closed and has whitewashed windows. Is it being done up or has it closed permanently, I wonder.

Fly-tipping in SE22 -- bang to rights!
Nigello replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Stop! The message was written on the spur of the moment, it was four sentences long, it said something like "be a good neighbour/citizen. Do not fly tip. The council will be informed" - you no longer have it so don't embellish. It was not aggressive or threatening, not even "potentially"; it was to-the-point. You were in your bed, so I didn't knock (it was way before 0800 on a Saturday). Your cleaner or someone who has access to your house had dumped rubbish. I never knew who you were before I "bragged" on the forum, so please don't take it personally. I still don't. Noone knows who you are or where you live - it's an anonymous forum, remember - so you can't take offence when people say "nice work" etc. - they're not talking about you because they don't know you. They're talking about a person in their imagination. I wrote- without any suggestion as to where exactly the "culprit" lived - to show that there is a problem with fly-tipping and to encourage others to not just walk on by. There's way too much of that in SE22. Get a new cleaner! -
Fly-tipping in SE22 -- bang to rights!
Nigello replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
DunstansChap, I came around early one morning, but all the curtains were drawn, hence my message - which was not aggressive: "Be a good neighbour. I have reported this to the council. Do not fly-tip." I wasn't going to leave the bag there without action: far too many folk do that, and given that I was on my way out for the day, I didn't want to leave it to come back to later. I'd do the same again if I came across the same but I still wouldn't rap at the door to have a go if all the signs were that people were in bed. -
I saw a large bin bag left (fly-tipped) on the corner of Goodrich and Upland. I peeked inside and found empty Amazon boxes with the names of two residents of a nearby address. (I'd love to put the details of the offenders - or at least the cleaners who work for those people - but think the admins would not like it.) I took one of the boxes out, wrote on it "do not fly tip. I have informed the council. Be a good neighbour" and then took it round to the address and put it on their porch. Any other fly-tipping success stories out there?
