  4. You can still work to a tight budget, yet be thoughtful about aesthetics. <<<< Solipsistic claptrap. An eight year old, unless s/he is precocious and of a prodigious design sensibility, really does not care about fineries of the building they're learning in (unless, of course, that structure is unsafe, dilapidated and uncared for, which the new school - despite its functional looks - will not be). Stop thinking about yourselves and how important design and aesthetics are to your life and think of the education, safety and development of the child. I love things of beauty, but I don't want the baby of good education to be thrown out with the bath waters of design-fetishism. Make the school strong, secure, well-lit and reasonably attractive and then fill it with great teachers to instruct enthusiastic children of parents committed to their education and bin the aesthetic-anxiety, please.
  5. Thanks Yes, I have a fern which has done well but never really gets past a certain size. At least it's healthy, so thankful for small mercies/small ferns.

  7. I really don't think the minds of four or five year olds are ready for the alleged inspiration a school building designed to an aesthetic so lusted after by EDF types. They want it to be clean, safe, secure, well-lit and with good facilities and teachers. The adults - of a certain kind, at least - want the added beauty, not the children.

  10. Try ringing at 0800 and asking for an appt on the day. You could ring later and ask for a cancellation, or you might be offered a consultation with a prescribing nurse. I saw one when I had a bad chest and she prescribed antibiotics. I have to say she was more attentive and thorough than some of the doctors I have seen in my life (at DMC and elsewhere).
  11. Why not phone the companies in question and let them know it's not a good idea to go that way? At least it's something that might work as you wait for a better solution.
  12. I've a few yuccas that do well outside, lots of ivy, jasmine, some holly as well as hydrangea and pyracantha but need a few more ideas for large pots in a relatively sheltered (no winds) but ultimately sun-free back yard. Has anyone an idea for others that might do as well, including climbers? Thanks
  13. Read back, Belle: the conversation went off on a tack, to which I responded.
  14. Pedestrians and cyclists do not mix, even in parks, unless the lanes are completely separate and not just a lined-off section of a walkway. Today in SE22 I saw two lots of magazinified parents - daddy up front with baby/toddler in a basket, mummy at the back and the other kid riding in between - on the pavement. Having a child cycle with you doesn't allow you to break the law. (They sped off too quickly before I could tell them.)
  15. Cindy Wilson/Kate Pierson + Junior Senior (don't laugh)! It's a breezy, upbeat tune a la Tom Tom Club, with a neat video too: or

  17. It is called "Magic Wok" and the sign I was going on about has been re-filled with pics of Chinese food you can buy inside. Wish it well.

    Flu jab

Got mine, after having waited a long time in the surgery, to be told that I'd've been much quicker had I taken up the offer from Boots! Was told it would be 90 percent effective but will still be washing my hands often and thoroughly.

  20. Report to the anti-social hotline at Southwark - 7525 2000. Record it on your phone and try to find out exactly where it came from to give you a much better chance of the council being able to do something.
  21. I like it. A man was working on the building earlier this afternoon. Hope they take down that redundant metal hoarding that used to have pictures of the Chinese fare on show.
