  1. That is good news. I hope this one will thrive and that the bench will be back as soon as the council sees fit. Thanks
  2. I have pitched in, thanks for the prompt. I am also curious as to what others think, hence my post.(I also think that by raising the issue here I am highlighting it and may turn others' attention to it who otherwise would not have been thinking about it.)
  3. Licks
  4. Very, very few people were wearing poppies on and around LL this morning. I found it rather disappointing, even more so than the fact fewer business owners are selling them. (The sorting office at Peckham was the only place I saw selling them on Friday.)
  5. The dry cleaner on Forest Hill Road has them, including stick-on ones.
  6. Thanks very much for telling me how things work. Much obliged, Miss/Mr Locks! I will try harder to use a public forum in the way you think it should be! I strive to be educated and you ahve helped me know so much more! I am much obliged for your help on my journey of understanding and I will now do so much better.
  7. Yes, I am aware of buying online and I have made a contribution online. I was more interested in whether or not I was the only one to note an absence of sellers in and around here. I still think, despite the people saying they are being sold at X or Y location, there are much fewer places selling them.
  8. Since when am I imposing anything on anyone? It is a series of suggestions and thoughts, not thought-wave-carried compulsions. I think the council or other powers that be should take seriously the threat of obesity and of a sedentary lifestyle when thinking about traffic and travel provisions, as well as safety and security, as a matter of course. I don't think it wise or sensible that such acknowledgement be taken out of discussions when talking about public transit vs private mean of travel, any more than provisions for elderly, disabled, etc. should be ignored. Public money is for everyone and ought to work to the public good of most people, taking into account special needs, of course. So, if you are a bit fat and lazy, get up and walk a bit and you will be doing all of us a favour. If you are disabled and cannot, then I empathise, but I respect you and your position, and certainly don't patronise you by using you as a virtue-signalling shield against all suggestions and ideas that can work for as many people as possible.
  9. Oh, come on - many of us can manage a 1 mile walk. We are not bloody made of felt! I agree that SOME people have a disability but let's not overplay this. Perhaps those who CAN, should think about getting into the position of even ENJOYING a one mile walk. Please don't use concern for a small group of people who do require our support and empathy to exaggerate the number of people who cannot (rather than CHOOSE NOT) to walk a mile or less as part of a daily commute. (Banning private vehicles was never in my argument, so not guilty of that.) I do feel strongly that people are getting lazier and unrealistic about what is a reasonable amount of self-propelled transport. If we are able we ought to move more and sit less, and if that means a half hour less in front of the telly or in the Q for an over-priced coffee in a plasticised cup, so be it.
  10. Goldilocks - if walking fifteen minutes both ends is a deal ender, well, what a state of affairs. (I don't say that you think this is too much to walk or not, so don't have a go if not. If you do, then, see above!)
  11. There was a time, not that long ago, that practically every other shop or pub or civic amenity would sell them. Have we all got armed forces-shame? Are we anti plastic to such an extent that we won't buy them? Have the poppy pushers decided online sales for brooches, bags etc. with poppy motives are more valuable?
  12. I cannot find anywhere selling poppies - nothing at the library, no cafes in Dulwich Village, nor the post office there. Anyone else experienced this?
  13. 6 months, 1 week is what the government ministers said on Today, etc. a few weeks ago.
  14. Caustic? Check a dictionary, please! Sheesh I did offer advice - DIY, use your accumulated knowledge to forward your interests and do some good - but you saw it as a slight. 🤷‍♂️
  15. Heartblock - you were very interested in this so why don't you start a thread and get folk to put in their (checked) locations? It is so easy to say "why don't we" and then hope someone else will pick up on one's brilliant idea and do the slog! This could be your way to help someone for very little initial time invested. (I am not that invested to do it myself and never suggested it in the first place.)

    COP 26

Do you really think that is all they do? Do you not realise that every TV-facing high-up has many other delegates who do the real work? Obviously not.
  17. Would it not be best for them to be placed in properties that are likely to be open the longest hours, such as CoOp, EDT, M and S, the small Sainsbury's? Those places are also pretty corporate (EDT is part of a small chain, no?) and would have someone who would, I hope, be across the niceties such as upkeep and training, liabilities, etc.
  18. limited tools - ha, that could be read in a way it wasn't meant here!
  19. I think it could be just a small number who habitually litter and make a god-awful mess. I see people of all types using bins yet very few people dropping. Does it come from cars? (I have seen some people take out nappies and litter from cars and dump it in the gutter. One who did this got very sharp shrift and took it back!)
  20. They're a good idea, Annie5, but please adopt a DIY attitude if you are keen to help. Just picking up the odd can or bottle and putting it in a recycling bin yourself whilst on your daily walk or errands can make a big difference. I often pick up 7 or 8 items on a typical morning walk, mainly cans and plastic bottles (Lucozade and various lager brands feature most).
  21. I totally agree with Rahx3 - the closer your cheeks and jowls are to others' the more you should do to be a good neighbour. If you live in the wilderness, whoop it up and light fires every night, but don't do anything approaching that when you live in a densely populated city. As for fireworks, I would not allow them to be sold unless to licensed operators which is a complete turnaround from my previous take.
