I see that Walworth Road, which is similar to Rye Lane in terms of businesses and footfall, is very clean. There?s been an effort, I think, to scrub it up and keep it like that (eg. hardly any litter; shop shutters scrubbed clean). How come this is not the case on LL and Rye Lane, where many businesses pay scant attention to how their properties look once they?ve shut up shop? Was there a special campaign by the council to concentrate on Walworth Road? If so, could the same be done for grot spots nearer to where EDF readers live and work? Too many businesses (Lloyd?s in N X Road, the pharmacy at the GG roundabout do nothing to clean up their act and ought to be helped/persuaded/compelled to do so.) Over to you, Cllr.

Adults of a certain ilk thinkg that because they are eitehr carrying tot (precariously but cutely) or shepherding them, they can ride on pavements, be it at night, day, when it's busy with lots of pedestrians or where it's a particulaly narrow stretch. It is called entitlement, selfishness or hubris, epithets they'd likely chuck readily and with a certain amount of venom at politicians, etc. whose own disregard for the rules somehow is different from theirs.

Has the council mucked up with its Xmas tree collection?
Nigello replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
How about buying a tree that is 5'6 next year OR buy a saw to go with a 6' + tree? -
Abusive people in Dulwich Park just now
Nigello replied to Angelina's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I didn?t excuse them. Read what I said and tell me it doesn?t criticise the abuser. ?The person was abusive and should not have behaved like this,? 🤷♂️ -

Alexthecamel I am sorry that I don't meet your requirments vis-a-vis how I should think and respond to a public post on a public forum in a democratic country. Also, as I stated explicitly in my post, I agreed that the abuser was wrong and should not have behaved like that. and that I could hold this view but also note that 17 years old is not common parlance for a child. Yet you decided to ignore that and demand that I Think Like You. Please be more adult (16+) and enjoy the freedom that comes with having your own thoughts, some of which may be contradictory but do not necessarily have to cancel each other out. I also pointed out that the person may have been neuro divergent yet you chose not to acknowledge that possibility (even though the OP did herself) and not give me credit for looking for a reason that may have helped the mother of the young adult come to terms with the name calling. -
request to avoid log fires today as pollution level high
Nigello replied to McMurphy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The REAL problem, ie. one that makes much, much more of an impact, is people buying stuff that they don't need, wasting food, using cars or taxis when really their own two feet could do a much cleaner job of it, having lots of kids, etc. etc. but it is MUCH easier and satisfying to ask a few dozen (at the very most) wood burners in and around a section of SE22 to not light a (pretty likely kiln-dried wood fuelled) fire in their already EU-compliant burners for an hour or three. So, if you are THAT keen on not having pollution, think very, very seriously about pledging to not waste, not drive as much, not have your three planned children and make do with two or one, because those choices will pay off much, much, much better dividends. AND NO FRANCO MANCA PIZZA FOR YOU, FOREVER! -

To be consistent don?t buy pizza from places thar use wood-burning ovens. -
Abusive people in Dulwich Park just now
Nigello replied to Angelina's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Agreed mainly, but 17 is really not a child. 17 year olds can drive, go to war, etc. etc. (I can hold this fact and opinion and also agree that the person was abusive and should not have behaved like that so please, no online haranguing because it is not warranted.) Also, the person may well be neurologically diverse and not act in the same way as other adults. If this is the case then my sympathy is mainly with them because they have a way harder time of it than most other people and may well not know that what they said is "cruel". But we don't know (though you did allude to the possibility). -
Has the council mucked up with its Xmas tree collection?
Nigello replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think you are too kind in your estimation of some constituents, Renata. Some simply CBA to do the right thing and just dump them, thereby blocking pavements and parking slots. Better by far for the council to do daily rounds with a portable shredder or for there to be drop offs - why not use The Plough, etc. or other sites that sold the damned things as a mulching site? The current situation isn't tenable, but thanks for the information anywya. -

Good job (as in well done but for middle America) - makes me cringe and annoyed at the same time. -

Nigello replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There are piles of four or five in two places along Goodrich, taking up parking spaces. Tons more in Dulwich Village and peppered about SE21. Not impressed with either those who are dumping them or the council for not collecting the ones that are "legal" size. -
Didn;t the EU insist that VAT be applied to gas and electricity?
-
They are endemic so just take care. We cannot rely on the police (remember them?) to stop those breaking the law on e-scooters. Hard Paddington stares and brisk tsk-tsks are all we have in our arsenal...

I see scores of abandoned trees, blocking pavements and parking spaces, and no evidence of collection, either by the standard refuse vans or the ones that used to patrol the streets looking for the trees. I have complained online about ones near to me but they are everywhere. If you have a collection of trees on your pavement or in your road, please do complain under fly tipping on the website. If they get a lot they may finally understand what is (not) going on! https://www.southwark.gov.uk/street-care/fly-tipping

I am not switching on the heating till later in the day, and only then for about 90 minutes downstairs before putting it on again in the early evening. My gas engineer said it is best to set the thermo low and not switch on upstairs rads. till needed, and keep the downstairs ones only at 4, not 6, on their individual thermos. at least until it gets warmer. I think the gov. will go with helping those who most need it (elderly, on benefits, etc.) rather than dropping the VAT so most (not all) of us here, I reckon, will be taking a hit. Put that extra cardi on!

James has been helpful in dealing with the process of collecting the full bins but not picking up spilt litter around them, in Dulwich Village. (Perhaps the bin-bag collectors and installers are forbidden from picking up litter that was already there, likely from crows and squirrels? If so, this is lunacy!) I wonder whether it is a good idea to approach the chains (Costa, Gail's, etc.) to ask them to supply a worker a day (not in their own time, of course) to collect stray cups and wrappers in a 200m distance from their shop? McDonald's do that.

They are coming to LL also - I think there will be a bay near to Superdrug.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Nigello replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have two councillors. One nearly always responds to emails and follows up. The other does not even acknowledge them, so I now only go to one of them. Other councillors in the area who are not for my ward (but they do not know that when I email them as I do not put in my postcode) have never replied. They are either rude, stupid, high-handed or dead. -
If you are away and your bins are being left out, ask a neighbour to put them back inside your front yard, etc. That way you will be doing something to deter those who are marking houses for potential burglary but also keeping the footpaths clear for those who are less able to see or negotiate them. (And fit deadlock/alarm!)

But that is eradicating history, whether it is good or bad. Think about it - you are helping to erase actual facts when you get rid of street names and the like. That could mean that the future generations, and probably only one or two down the line, could have fewer daily reference points from which to learn about the bad and the good. Talk about defeating the point! Life is not that black and white so leave things alone, on the whole, and provide context and use it as a pointer to a wider discussion so that the supposed righting of wrongs doesn't end up erasing the history that the righters are so concerned about being exposed.

Is there a reliable and local (2 miles or so) testing place for travel-related antigen tests? It is for travel to a country that takes either PCR or antigenr or LAMP. Cheaper the better. Thanks
-
I think it is a bit small, but who knows. Also, what about deliveries and the like? We all know we need more mid-range dining options lest we starve and start to go mad with boredom...!
-
The old ones seemed not that old and fit for purpose - providing shelter and bus information - so how come the need to spend more on new ones? Our local riffraff will still spray and carve their names on them in a bid to seem big and important...
-
The old ones outside the post office on LL and on Barry northbound, after Whately, are being removed and new ones put in.

The absence of the final "ed/d" in words that have, until about four or so years ago, very definitely had them.
