Emily, you seem to be annoyed that the council are doing something that they should be doing, which investigation parties who have flouted planning regulations. You're having a go at the policewoman not the criminal. Why don't you have a go at Caffe Nero? They are the ones who broke the law and so it's their fault the council have to waste your money. Is this true councillors? Has the CPZ been introduced elsewhere and been a massive income generator for the council? In fact, has it been introduced anywhere and been beneficial for the area? Even more annoying aircraft noise?!

I see one of the protesters against the Heathrow expansion on the roof of the House of Commons today was from East Dulwich, or as the Daily Cookwank calls them "the new pin-ups of the green movement" "Olivia Chessel the youngest of today's protesters (bottom left), was also involved in that campaign. She was pictured today with one arm raised aloft in triumphant salute. She lives with her mother Karen, 59, in East Dulwich." http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/02_04/protester1_800x567.jpg I prefer having the picture of that tennis girl scratching her bum pinned up on my wall, but maybe that's just me -
The comparison to a crack dealer was just to show that your argument that "a business that is self-evidently hugely popular with local people" and should therefore be above the law seemed a bit silly. Rather like a comparison to a crack dealer. And I think that Nero should stay, it sells things that people want and I agree it is popular but I would like them punished for breaking the rules, they can afford it and that money should be put back in to East Dulwich.

Fined ?75 for dropping a cigar butt - fair?

please can we see you complaint letter? -
not sure, they didn't follow planning regulations, which one is that?

That crack dealer on my street corner is really popular, especially with young people, I think it's unfair for the police and authorities to waste our taxpayers money hassling her as she's providing a service to lots of people. Yeah, I know but I'm just making a point. Fine Caffe Nero ?233,000 and put the money back into the community. Or ask them for a voluntary contribution of that amount to show they care about the the community.

Do You Know Anyone Who Has Been Mugged Recently?

It's a shame to hear about those incidents you listed in those areas Gerry (and of your friend Oglandia) and I hope everyone's OK. I may be wrong but surely making kids think mugging a normality is one of the worse things we can do, they should be made aware that it's wrong and should be acted upon, it's up to us as adults to help educate them on what the actions are, be they preventative, during or after the event. I'm guessing your original question came from me questioning your statement yesterday "school kids and adults are mugged every day in East Dulwich". Personally I have a dislike for statements that I see as scaremongering and false. Admittedly you seem to have connections to a greater number of people than most who have been mugged so it is something you feel strongly about and I'm just trying to redress the balance. Please don't think I don't live in an lovely rose tinted ivory tower, I've had a loaded sawn-off shotgun shoved in my stomach, been standing next to my friend when he was shot by a drug dealer, been in my local pub when there was a machete and gun attack and I also have friends who have been mugged (one of whom even poohed his pants). None of these were in East Dulwich. As I see it the best thing do is help people be prepared and support them. You've probably noticed that I've been banding around the East Dulwich Safer Neighbourhood Team Telephone number: 020 8721 2447. I've recently discovered that they're the people to call when you're not feeling safe but it's not something you want to call the Police about, like if you feel threatened by someone or a group. East Dulwich is a relatively safe place going from my experience and the experience of most on this thread and I believe it's better for people to feel safe (but aware) than scared which is why I reacted to your statement. -

Now the police are giving out fines for dropping cigars are they? What is the world coming to? If only the police would set up a partnership scheme with schools so make pupils and teachers feel safer, perhaps they could call it the Safer Schools Partnership. -

I don't have a box myself so I'm not sure what you're talking about. Anyway as I mentioned on your other thread about your friend being picked on, there is the Safer Neighbour Hood team, they deal with things like that, so there is effort being put into the right thing. I'll copy and paste it here again: Safer Neighbourhood police teams - taken from http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourCommunity/Dulwich/lookingafterDulwich.html "There are three Safer Neighbourhoods police teams in Dulwich in addition to other policing teams. Each team is made up of six police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). Their aim is to find out what affects your daily life and feelings of security and help find lasting solutions to these problems. Teams are permanent ... See this site http://www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods/ for more details" Put this number in your phone: East Dulwich Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team Tel: 020 8721 2447, they're good for reporting non-police type incidents to. I hope that helps -

seanmlow I think it's a bit crap of you to refer to the people who fined you as "dim-wits", "fools" and "not very bright individuals", they are people doing their job. You did wrong, not them, get over it. added: ps it's a minimum of ?60, maximum ?1000 fine and three points on your licence for jumping a red light, just ?60 as you mentioned earlier [edited once] -

I think ?75 is rather harsh for dropping a cigar butt but I'm guessing you ain't going to do it again. I rather like the idea of giving litter droppers the option 1) pay the fine or 2) give them some gloves and a high-vis jacket saying "I'm a litterer paying my dues" and spend 30 minutes picking up litter in the area. People could throw eggs at them too but then someone would have to clear them up so probably not worth it. -

You don't feel safe, call them and tell them about it. There was a need for people to feel safer in their neighbourhood so they set whole department to help people feel safer, I'm just saying use them as that's their sole purpose. The police have other things to do, image if you were being attacked by these girls and called the police but they were delayed because someone on the other side of the 'hood had reported seeing a trouble maker outside a shop. -
