Crystal Palace Road (pre-1914 photograph)
Mark replied to macroban's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I reckon you're right mightyroar, that's probably the spire of St Johns church on Goose Green you can just see in the distance -
What's a "proper" pub? And what is an "honest" pint?
-
And don't forget The Gowlett on Gowlett Road, proper ales in there (and they only cook decent pizzas)

Heart rending plea... (by estate agents)
Mark replied to snorky's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So getting back on topic, it seems like estate agents are having a hard time and having to beg in various ways to get people to sell up with them. Saying that I haven't received a F**tons letter in the last 3 months (considering I got 6 from them in a 3 month period) so perhaps they don't need to promote themselves or maybe they're just being prudent. -
This argument's gone around before where you get what you pay for. I pay ?40 a month to use at Fusion by Goose Green and there's no one supervising people, there's usually 3 or 4 machines broken, hardly ever space for stretching or free weights and you have to put up with shit music. For an extra ?30 a month I wouldn't expect to put up with the above, I've had a look around the esph and I thought it look pretty tidy but right now it's not in my budget.

I thought that's what he was saying. Blimey, so the 77 BNP supporters round here keep the Iceland and a Somerfield going, they must be loaded. I expect they're the ones who over inflated the house prices too.

Personally I've never been a fan of avatars, they only tend to be used by a few and they get abused and people put in funny animated gifs which are rather naff and irritating when you're trying to read around them. The safest bet and admittedly the most boring option is to not have them at all.

Compared to the local competition for mens clothes I think it's ok.

I propose a 1 month ban on posting about Green and Blue
Mark replied to jollybaby's topic in The Lounge
Blimey, there's been two discussions about them in a month. There were four or five about the election, usually a few about F**tons, Le Chandelier etc and there's always ones about curry/thai/chinese restaurants... are you suggesting we ban those too? I think you'll find that Green & Blue team get a huge amount of support from the bloody moaning forum people, just because one person has an issue with the manager doesn't mean that everyone does (even though that's what you've seemed to have read into it). As for "Do we not have anything else to discuss on here?"... there's about 250 pages of topics, that's about 7,500 things for you to discuss. Or feel free to start your own but just don't make it about Green & Blue, like this one. Just trying to put a realistic perspective on it. -
I understand this is film of the 08:15 from East Dulwich to London Bridge this morning:

"East Dulwich skyline has been creatively enhanced" ???
Mark replied to Bony Fido's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"An enviable array of bars and restaurants on Lord-hip Lane" see what they've done there? They truly are masters of words and stuff. -
ok, so here's what Boris says (http://www.backboris.com) Crime and Safety: I will give support to the wonderful work of local community projects that get young people off the streets and give them purpose and a realisation of their value as members of society. I will provide ?2.6 million to fund hand-held scanners or new knife archways at transport hubs to hinder the mobility of those who carry knives and guns. I will lobby for an end to the stop and account form I will provide local neighbourhoods with New York-style crime maps, to enable residents to hold local police to account. I will double the strength of Safer Transport Teams, by releasing funding for approximately 440 extra PCSOs to patrol the buses and trial live CCTV. I will give revenue inspectors more powers to tackle fare evasion. I will provide funding for 3 new Rape Crisis Centres to help the forgotten victims of sexual violence Those who abuse their free transport privileges will be able to earn back their free Oyster by doing community service as part of my Payback London scheme. Transport: I will double the number of police officers to patrol buses I will provide funding for 50 extra British Transport Police Officers to patrol the worst train stations. I will phase out bendy buses and run a new competition to find a 21st century Routemaster that has full disabled access, runs on clean fuel and has conductors. I will introduce live, interactive bus tracking so you can see where your bus is and avoid long waits at the bus stop. I will look again at having an air-conditioned tube. We need to take the thumbs of the RMT off the windpipe of London commuters with a no-strike deal that gives both sides the benefit of an independent arbitrator. I will lobby government for powers to fine utility companies that run overtime when digging up the roads. I will provide ?2 million for safe cycle parking. I will work with boroughs to improve existing cycle and walking routes. I will fight for London's rail commuters and campaign for longer trains, more frequent services and Oyster at all stations. Injured veterans who live in London will be able to travel free on London buses. I will lobby for long-term projects that London needs, including the Oxford Street Tram, East London Line Phase 2, DLR and Transit extensions and the Crossrail to Ebbsfleet. I will allow motorcycles to use bus lanes in the city. We will continue to oppose the construction of a third runway at Heathrow airport. Environment I will support the Low Emission Zone to improve air quality. I will take a zero tolerance approach to littering and graffiting. I will work with underperforming [cleaning] areas to help them deliver cleaner streets for their residents. I will protect and preserve our beautiful open spaces by working with local councils to ensure they are safe and pristine. I will plant more street trees. I will work with local councils to improve our record on recycling so that it becomes a natural part of all Londoners' lives. I will continue to work in association with other cities across the world to tackle climate change. I will practice what I preach with a series of environmentally friendly measures to be adopted across the GLA family including: a ban on bottled water, a ban on internal flights, recycling, green procurement and sustainability. Housing We need to work in partnership with local councils to increase the number of affordable homes, year on year, in every borough. We must develop more family-sized homes with gardens, and we need to give more Londoners the chance to own their family home. Healthcare I will make it my moral duty to speak up for Londoners and help them by telling them frankly what kind of healthcare they are actually getting. I will beef up the role of the London Health Commission, allocating it a permanent budget to ensure that everything within the Mayor's remit, be it transport, housing or skills, makes reducing these health inequalities a priority. I will lobby for public health money to be safeguarded against being used to plug holes in NHS budgets. I will stand up against local hospital closures. I will make our streets and open spaces safer.

why would people mention it if it "was completely libellous"?

Sunday 11th May - ED festival fair - Goose Green - Free
Mark replied to Fuschia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm afraid there's no forum tent this year, I've had words with the almighty and sunshine's been promised for Sunday May 11th so we can sit on the grass instead. -
It seems the Old Bailey Online site is now working so you can see details of London crimes committed between 1674 and 1913, here's a link to see search results for East Dulwich http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/search.jsp?form=_divs&_divs_fulltext=%22east+dulwich%22&ref=&_divs_div0Type_div1Type=&submit.x=44&submit.y=-22&submit=Search I haven't had a chance to look through them yet but here's a snippet: SAMUEL THOMAS, Breaking Peace > wounding, 29th February 1836. ... I left the vestry on the Wednesday evening, the 24th of February, on horseback?I went in the direction of my house?when I got past East Dulwich chapel, and the Plough public-house, I observed something on the road?it was half-past eight o'clock, and quite dark?immediately a voice called out to me, "Who are you?" or, "Who comes here"?I do not know which?I immediately drew up to the person addressing me, quite close?I could have touched him?I then saw distinctly who it was?it was the prisoner at the bar?I observed he had a gun in his hand?he said something, but I cannot recollect what?I was agitated and touched the more very quickly, and when I got a short distance I turned my head, and saw the prisoner levelling the gun, presenting a at me?I immediately threw myself on the neck of the mare, and hung on?I got about the distance of the mare, and then fell on the road?I immediately scrambled and got up and ran off?I distinctly heard the snap of the gun?I am sure of it?I then ran on as fast as I could to the toll-gate...

Seeing a driver insult another driver is not an excuse to bring in traffic calming measures. Anyway isn't the digging up of Lordship Lane for the next 3 months going to calm down traffic enough?

there's a planning application outside the amusement arcade to turn it into an apple shop wine bar.

A packed theatre is halfway through a performance when suddenly a man starts shouting "fire! fire!" Everyone runs out the building but it's soon discovered that there is no fire, so they ask the man why he shouted what he did. "Freedom of speech" he replies, "I can shout what I want". The point being yes you can say what you want but it's preferred that you don't say some things in certain circumstances. There are terms and conditions on this site but we generally leave it up to common sense. If an individual or business has asked the forum not to publish something for a good reason then we generally do so out of politeness because East Dulwich is a small(ish) place and it's not fair on those recognisable individuals or businesses. If someone thinks something is out of order then let us know and we'll act on it, they just have to ask. Sometimes they demand in an incredibly rude manner and shout and have tantrums and slag of the users of the forum but we do what we see fit and for the general good. Fortunately it doesn't happen often, about 4 times in the last 18 months. There's a good bit here about libel on the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A1183394

The Picture Room - 82 Lordship Lane - Closing

Of course you can say you don't like G&B benjaminty but I would say that it's better to say why as well, I know local traders read this forum and they act on people's comments. G&B and the Seacow are classic examples of people who care about what they do and take on board what people have said about them and act on it. Personally I think that's great business sense. And yes, I do know the whole story and I can say that it wasn't G&B who asked for the details to be removed. The party in question has asked for the issue not to be mentioned on the forum and so therefore the forum team have to respect that (and I know that is what the Administrator tried to do without stopping the discussion). The forum's had a few legal threats against it and I have to say (as the person who set it up) that I really appreciate the offers of help from forum users who work in area and can offer assistance. Oh, and if you come to a forum drinks sometime and I'm there, just ask and I'll tell you the full story.

Thanks for the tip Buzzard but it's not as simple as that and just because it's not illegal doesn't mean it's ok to do it. We don't want to embarrass the local businesses, it?s not what we do and it?s a bit rude to do that to someone local in the community. It?s their business and they have asked for it not to be mentioned so we have asked people not to mention it. Can we leave it there please.

It'll be sad if they have to close permanently (or even temporarily), I hope they resolve this issue soon.
