Does anyone have any recommendations for good sources of news, or more exactly, places to read news that's to my or your liking? I'm finding.. BBC - become too lazy, sensational and intolerable Guardian has a few good stories, probably the most readable individual source Telegraph - interesting and the physical one comes free with a bottle of water Times and FT - a few good stories but you have to pay for all the rest Facebook or Twitter - Don't touch that Daily Mash / Daily Mail - Fun comics to dip into every now and then Motor Cycle News - Great but a bit too specialised The Google News (aggregator) seems to be my go-to now as it has a fairly good spread, it's simple and you can block sources (see comics above) https://news.google.com The Independent - today it has "Breaking News - Brown backs Corbyn as Labour leader" - that's not breaking news, that's someone's opinion on someone. A bomb going off in London is Breaking News. OK, you're never going to get something perfect where you read every story and enjoy it, I just don't want adverts between every paragraph, pictures of Kate Middleton or sensationalising every little fart in a parliamentary chamber. I'm happy to pay a small charge if necessary. Have you any suggestions?

Sorry, BBC rant again: Twitter/Facebook and how they're used to fill up space: "This woman sent pictures of herself to her insurers instead of her car" - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41928752 "Instead of trying to forget the awkward blunder, Alyssa ... decided to share the photos on social media" Cue pathetic news story "One Facebook user commented: "I read this last night and laughed sooooooo hard! So funny! And I see where the confusion came from."" Oh fuck off Doctor Who: First look at Jodie Whittaker in character http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-41928500 "Fans have already started dissecting the look" On Twitter Simon Crossley says "I like it looks cool". BBC Radio 6 "Dave from Marlborough has just tweeted to say this song reminds him of his 23rd birthday in Southend". Really? Why did you talk over the song to tell me that useless piece of information.

Seconding what DuncanW said. An individual does something wrong, and because they're part of an identifiable "tribe" then they whole lot gets branded wrong-doers which then creates a bigger divide between them and us. It happens to politicians, drivers, the forum ("typical EDF slagging off a victim..."), cyclists, yoof, races, football supporters, the police, local shops etc. all tarred with the same brush. Been happening for years but it's good that people recognise it for what it is. I hope.

seenbeen, please can we see it from a few different angles, and next to something so we can see how big it is? Edited to add: I'd chuckle if it was the size of an Argos pencil -

I guess it depends on the skill of the builder/armourer -

Broken off piece of baton (batten?) with nails in it dropped by a builder? What makes you think it's a weapon? Is there blood on it? -
Agree. Legalities aside, she took something that she knew wasn't hers, she's a thief. ETA: Assuming she's not taken it to a police station, handed it in etc etc of course.

How sensationalist the BBC News has become. Man inappropriately touches woman's knee 15 years ago, he said sorry, she says she ain't bothered. BBC front page news says "Michael Fallon 'apologised for touching journalist's knee'" That's not news. It's an old, miniscule incident that's trying to be used to stir up more stuff to make yet more shit news. Note to self: Stop reading the news you moron, it's irrelevant rubbish! Go re-read the chapter on Why you shouldn't read the news in that book The Art of Thinking Clearly.

I did "read ALL the posts", pugwash didn't mention anything about conversations being secure. Anyway, the police eh, should be out catching criminals not feeding themselves.

DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Does not sound too secure having Police (Work > )matters being discussed in a local caf?. Why? Do you really think the police are that stupid? Next you'll be saying there's not enough of them out there being seen in the community. I think it's great they eat in a local cafe, I hope they eat donuts, call each other by their surnames and look for suspicious people going into the bank opposite.

Pop in and speak to them. We used to run a shop and people who came in to ask for jobs were more likely to get them as they generally passed a few simple "tests" (ability to speak, approach people politely, ability to get off their ass, show initiative etc etc)

Dear neighbour, we only live next door, you know where we live so please come and let us know as we don't read the forum and if we don't know that it's an issue for you then it'll only get worse. (It's not us by the way, our children are locked in a soundproof room until they're old enough to play outside quietly) #responsibleparentsANDneighbours

I assume if it was an industrial/commercial property Zoopla won't list its sale price as it only lists residential property sales. -
There was me thinking this thread was about handlebar moustached gentlemen taking over the area, but no, it's gentrification: "the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste" https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/gentrification renovating and improving = good conforming to middle-class taste = not sure what middle class taste is but I wonder if there's one or two people on here willing to enlighten the rest of us ...

MissWiggy Wrote: > > Such negativity on the forum but I don't know why > that surprises me any more! A couple of people saying they don't like it/having a different opinion to yours doesn't mean the whole forum's negative about it. It's like saying you found a bruised apple in your bag and so the veg shop's got to pot. I thought the building was nicely done, keeping the original ironwork and original front doors out on show* was a nice touch. Not what I would have spent the money on but respect for people who tastefully push boundaries, which is always going to rattle a couple of locals' cages. Oh, and good to have a local talking point on TV that's not about crime. * that's two for you edhistory -
It's a legal requirement to turn off the engine. Highway code rule 123 "You MUST NOT ... leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road. Generally, if the vehicle is stationary and is likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should apply the parking brake and switch off the engine to reduce emissions and noise pollution." Not sure how you can enforce it though.

I forgot to ask, was the guy ok in the end? And how long did the ambulance take to arrive? -

I assume there was a proper reason for the doctors not to attend, they have an oath to do the right thing (paraphrased) but it'll be interesting to hear the other side of the story. ------------------------------------------------------- > perhaps the most shocking was the receptionist asking if the guy was registered with the practice. Really? The medical practice could have found out useful medical information if this guy was registered there. On a side note, I'm a bit surprised (sort of) that people in a pub can't deal with someone having a fit, and also don't know the difference between a stroke and a heart attack. I'm really not knocking the original poster for running off to get help, which is more than most will do but please spend 4 mins reading the following. It could stop someone from dying / save someone having to run 10 mins to a doctors / make you a hero / whatever your motivation. Stroke symptoms http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/stroke/Pages/Symptoms.aspx Heart attack symptoms http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Heart-attack/Pages/Symptoms.aspx -
