  1. The problem with the women only sessions is that there's one at prime-time on a Thursday evening. It's not an issue that it's women only, it could be leprechaun only or people who like to dress up as Jan Leeming only, the problem is that it's excluding me from swimming between 6.30pm and 9.30pm on Thursday because I'm not one of the "6.30pm to 9.30pm on a Thursday" gang. Why not make it 6.30pm to 8pm? Anyway, I was just making a point, it's just something that I would like to see, I may be a minority but at least I've made my point known. Anyway I'm not really bothered now as I'm going to start playing squash on Thursdays at Dulwich Hamlets squash courts, where I believe anyone can use their courts no matter what their sex or sexual orientaion.
  2. It's the small warehouse behind Caffe Nero where the application for a gym's been made.
  3. Jeez, what is it with this hatred of others based on assumptions as to what their pay packet to work ratio is? I'm going to make my own assumptions here based on your comments but can I guess that you're underpaid, not buffed up and looking for somewhere to feel bad about yourself. You should be happy that whilst you're clutching your can of Tennants Super and lying in a pool of your own wee in a shop doorway somewhere, these undesirables gym members will all be in one place where you won't have to integrate with them. ;-)
  4. Hi Filiz I feel another gym would be good because Dulwich Baths/Fusion gym is in a state of disrepair and after three years of them telling me investment is going to be made to improve it I don't believe them anymore. Another local, convenient to get to gym would be welcome by me. Does it say anything other than a gym is to open on Lordship Lane in May? Quaywe, which one's 116? Mark
  5. I can confirm that there are now some reflective barriers surrounding a small pile of dirt (similar to a big molehill) next to the Dirty Old Lampost on Goose Green Roundabout. Some would say that's not a bad days work for a gang of council workers. Or a big mole.
  6. and there is of course an arcade of amusements at 52 Lordship Lane, which I assume has never won a window dressing award.
  7. I've added a 'no-cache' directive on the pages so that your browser should collect the latest version of each page each time you visit. Hopefully. Please let me know if works or not. I did get one logo from a lovely lady called Kelly which was a typographic mark of 'edf' which I haven't implemented. Although it was impresive it'll be good to get a few other options...
  8. Dulwich Community council Next scheduled main meeting: Date: Monday January 29, 2007, 7pm, Christ Church, 263 Barry Road SE22 Just gone planning meeting: Tuesday January 9, 2007, 7pm, Christ Church, 263 Barry Road SE22 Click here for the council's website if you want more details I've never been to one but would be interested to know the answers to your questions too
  9. here on Google maps It's on East Dulwich Road, towards the Rye if you're going from Goose Green. On the right.
  10. Firstly welcome to East Dulwich, secondly you can use East Dulwich as the base to vist some of the surrounding attactions: Dulwich Picture Gallery Horniman Museum Peckham Rye Park And of course show her our excellent array of bars and restaurants. How about you tell us all which night you're showing her round the area, we all wait in a pub and when you enter we're you best friends, pat you on the back and say things like "damn good to see you", buy her drinks, offer her our seats, crack jokes about Zapatistas, make her feel at home (!?) etc. Never fails. And tell us what you look like, so when we see you with her in the street we can nod and say hello, how you doing? Have you settled into the neighbourhood? You look well have you been working out? "You must pop round sometime the family are dying to meet you, little Jos?'s even made you a Welcome to East Dulwich cake.." etc etc How could she resist such a community?
  11. I look forward to Moxons opening too. I do hope they stay open late enough for me to pop in after work rather than have to go to Somerfield's (2 types of fish only) counter. Kiwi bashing has it's place here
  12. Last night in an evening of glitz and glamour never before seen in East Dulwich, The Black Cherry Bar accepted their trophy for being the Best Bar in East Dulwich 2006 as voted by you, the users of the East Dulwich Forum. Owner Angela Rush made excellent work of holding back her tears of joy and said "Thank you". She also said something like "we're proud to be the recipients of such a prestigious award, especially having beaten the high quality competition in the area, and especially after that incident when someone tried to fix the voting for another establishment. The Black Cherry prides itself on giving its customers a pleasant and comfortable experience, especially in the daytime when we offer quality teas, coffees and lunches in a non-chain store environment" Congratulations Black Cherry, officially the Best Bar in East Dulwich 2006 Black Cherry Bar 21 Lordship Lane East Dulwich SE22 8EW t: 020 8299 8877 website
  13. Wouldn't it be nice if our councillors didn't have to chase up Southwark council for us when they haven't performed basic tasks. Anyway thanks for the advice everyone, let's hope they don't miss a rubbish collection or there'll be a barrage of emails and phone calls for them to deal with ;-)
  14. To follow up Sara's post above ("You too can get things changed if you want, just attend a few Community Council meetings...": Dulwich Community council Next scheduled main meeting: Date: Monday January 29, 2007, 7pm, Christ Church, 263 Barry Road SE22 Next planning meeting: Tuesday January 9, 2007, 7pm, Christ Church, 263 Barry Road SE22 Click here for the council's website if you want more details
  15. If anyone needs someone to play squash with I'll give them a game. My level is ummm, ok although I haven't played for a few years so it's probably best if there's someone of similar standard who wants to get back into playing it. Thurday evening is the best night for me and I can get to Crystal Palace easily (although I've never been to the sports centre before). Let me know... Also I know JAGS have squash courts but I think you have to be a member to use them
  16. Blimey, I see an ED Estate Agent's sold a one bedroom flat on Whateley Road for ?260,000! Is that a record?
  17. Hi Joe you're right, maps showing the local areas of interest would be useful, we've looked into various ways to improve this site and this is one of the main ones. We need to find a way to smoothly incorporate it into the forum, perhaps on the local info page have links to the various maps you listed above. It's not too hard to set up, we've got our Google API key and instructions but it takes time which we don't have especially as the day job's about to get really busy. If there's anyone out there who can help us please do let us know. Thanks for the suggestion Mark
  18. Imagine you find a dirty old lamp on Goose Green, rub it and the predictable Genie offers you three (or more) wishes for East Dulwich in 2007. Or let's pretend the people who action what goes on in East Dulwich are reading this, what would you like them to do in the new year? I'll start: Northcross Road closed to traffic on a Saturday so the market can expand and possibly include a farmer's market Pre-pay Oyster Cards accepted at ED Train station Police walking the streets all the time and not just around election time A decent sign/statue on the Goose Green/ Lordship Lane roundabout And your wishes for East Dulwich in 2007 are...?
  19. From IC South London Baby flung into air by crash car Dec 22 2006 By Anna Giokas A BABY girl had a "miracle" escape after her pushchair was hit by a car and flung through the air across a busy road. The baby's gran was pushing her across the road when the car smashed into the buggy, throwing it into the air. The pushchair landed in the road, skidded on to the pavement and came to rest under some tables outside a pub.It was only then that the baby girl inside, who had just a scratch on her cheek, started to cry. Karen Frances, 46, who saw the accident at the junction of East Dulwich Grove and Lordship Lane in East Dulwich at 3pm on Monday, said: "The car went straight across the road, taking the buggy with it. "It was horrific, I was standing there thinking this can't be happening.I thought there was no way the baby would survive." The car,a black Nissan Primera, slammed into the front of The Bishop pub in Lordship Lane as the buggy went under one the tables outside. Karen, a lettings manager at Wates Residential next to the pub, rushed out to help and was one of the first on the scene. She said: "There was a young girl who was walking along the road and the car missed her by inches. She picked the baby up out of the buggy and was in such deep shock that she would not let it go. "I can't believe the baby was unhurt. It was a miracle." As a crowd gathered, Karen took the girl holding the baby and the baby's gran into her office. She said: "The grandmother was in extremely deep shock and I thought, I have to get them away from all these people. "Everyone was crowding around the baby. She was a bit sleepy and had a graze on her face, but otherwise she looked fine." A helicopter and ambulance were dispatched but stunned paramedics called off the helicopter after realising the infant had no serious injuries. The driver of the car, a 58-year-old woman, was treated for chest pains and shock. The driver, the grandmother, the young woman who had nearly been hit and the baby were all taken to King's College Hospital, in Denmark Hill, to be checked over. A police spokesman said the accident was not being investigated as a crime. It is the second time an accident has happened at the junction. A car mounted the kerb this summer a little further along the road. The latest crash has prompted calls for the council to make the junction safer. Lindsay Dilley, who works near by, said: "It was amazing the baby wasn't hurt, but if this happened in the summer when people were sitting outside the pub it would have been devastating. "The junction is left turn only, local people know that, but the signs are very small and people don't always realise. "They need to do something before someone is seriously hurt." The council has responded by saying that it is aware of the problem and is looking into it. In a statement, a spokesman said: "We have secured funding to investigate improvements to this junction so that it is safer for pedestrians and easier for buses to navigate. "We will be visiting the site with the police early in the new year. "Following this visit and an investigation into the causes of the accidents at this junction, we will decide which measures are the most appropriate."
  20. ...and wishing you much Christmas cheer from all of us here at Forum Towers. It's been great fun setting up the Forum and it's great fun running it. We look forward to your company in the coming year and hopefully bringing some peace, goodwill and interesting discussion to SE22 in 2007, who knows, people might even start putting events in the What's On section. So to everyone who uses this website, those of you who contribute and those who just like to watch, have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year Mark & the East Dulwich Forum Team ps The Forum's open all over the Christmas period so feel free to drop by anytime
  21. James from Hindwoods kindly stated on the Lordship Lane thread: "2 of the shops (not the corner shop) of the former Walsh Glazing is going to be 'White Stuff'" They seem to be the sole Commercial Agents dealing with it, perhaps they could tell us (if they're watching)?
  22. I don't know if a similar study has been carried out on secondary schools but then who needs proof when it comes to religion?
  23. ... compared to West Dulwich, where a Bishop enters a car (rather drunk, bangs his head, blames it on muggers)
  24. Don't know what caused it and hopefully noone was hurt but look at this
  25. Have you noticed the street lights on East Dulwich Road (the quieter road that goes down the side of Goose Green)? Apart from being triffid like the two things that appeal to me are (notice how I'm easily pleased) that they're white light and that all the light is directed downwards. None of this let's make the night sky unneccesarily yellow rubbish. They light the ground below them, good work Bellenden Project. Now, can we have some in the rest of East Dulwich please?
