  1. Beth, I'm pretty sure the Administrator doesn't mind when topics naturally go off topic. Anyway, thanks for pointing out the difficulties and timings associated with childcare that make it hard for women to go at non-primetime, now I know (being an uncle hasn't taught me these things).
  2. It's the Forum's official 6 month birthday on March 18th, perhaps this momentous occasion could be celebrated by drinking somewhere on the following Thursday or Friday? And I think it would be good to try and encourage other forum users to pop down, not just those that post messages but all those who just enjoy reading the forum. And it would also be good for any business who have received work through the forum to offer to put some money behind the bar.
  3. How do I know? I have friends in places you know (but they have nothing to do with it). I found out by reading the minutes of the Thursday, 16 November 2006 Dulwich Community Council meeting which I have attached to this message for your perusal.
  4. I believe it was ?8,000 allocated to that roundabout so I hope they're orchids
  5. I have no idea. I'll add you to mine and we'll see what happens, buddy.
  6. Blimey, that's a bit harsh isn't it and I somehow expect Fusion aren't feeling ashamed. I can only speak for myself here but I'm not going to feel ashamed for saying things like "I'm not saying don't have women only sessions", "I don't want to ask for a 'men only session'" "a good outcome would be for both sexes to be able to use the pool prime time Thursday". I asked, it didn't happen, I got over it because it doesn't bother me that much. Until someone brings into the discussion... obstetricians cutting women open and lawsuits (here I go...). WTF? I'm just trying to understand the reasons why it's at primetime Thursday, I understand the reasons for women-only sessions, I understand and agree with Abby's points and I agree that they should happen as there's obviously a requirement for them but more people would benefit and be happy and a little healthier if they moved it slightly. Please. I'm just trying to understand the 'business' logic behind it, why turn away the majority when there's a perfectly easy compromise, so if I may, a suggestion: Change Thursday evening swimming session from: 18:00 - 19:00 Everyone 19:00 - 20:00 Women only 20:00 - 21:00 Women only to 18:00 - 19:00 Women only 19:00 - 20:00 Everyone! 20:00 - 21:00 Everyone! Anyway, like I said, it doesn't bother me anymore and I'm grateful we have a pool so close that we can all use, many people don't. Oh, and I don't agree with Domitianus and his way of doing things in this instance, it's just a pool session we're talking about here.
  7. Does anyone know what the rules are about cycling on the pavement in London? It's illegal all over England There are lots of adults who seem to do it around ED - is it allowed? It's still illegal Are children allowed to? Yes if they're under 16 (which I guess most children are) What if you're cycling WITH children? Best cycle on the road next to them, if my previous comment is wrong and they get stopped by the po-lice cycle off quicly, shaking your head and saying things like "their parents should know better" Taken from Living Streets (Pavement Cycling PDF) "It is an offence for a cyclist to hinder or obstruct the free passage of a footway or passage (Highway Act 1835, s 78) or to wilfully ride on any footway or footpath (Highway Act 1835, s 72). In 1999, the Government made pavement cycling a fixed penalty offence, with offenders liable to a fine of ?20 (now raised to ?30)."
  8. I live by Goose Green and I see people exercising their dogs and most of them do pick up their "dog's eggs", however there are a few who don?t. What can I do? I've better things to do and I'm not sad enough (yet) to sit there with a telephoto lens and capture the perpetrators on camera and report them to the dog pooh police. Am I legally allowed to rub their noses in it? Can I fling it back at them whilst shouting "excuse me, you forgot this"? Scenario: You're walking through Goose Green in the summer and there's people playing frisbee and children doing roly-polys(? ). You see a couple with their dog, the dog poohs and the three of them happily walk off without picking it up, what would you do?
  9. Hi Some of my post has not arrived and it just maybe at the sorting office so I want to call them to find out if it's there but I can't find the number. Directory enquiries don't have it, internet search came up with an old number and the Royal Mail/Post Office Customer Services helpline is an automated service that takes you round in loops. Has anyone got the number? I'm sure it's on the card that they usually drop through the door to tell you they've missed you. Thanks
  10. What do people think about the police's power of stop and search and the way it's enforced? Is it a deterrent for carrying weapons? Breach of human rights? Excuse for certain groups to be picked on by the police? If you got nothing to hide it's fine?
  11. So after TJS's first post 5 weeks ago I can confirm that the Dirty Old Lampost on Goose Green Roundabout has gone. I can wait to see what they replace it with.
  12. oh you guys! Anyone out there got something useful to offer for the fair? Please
  13. Tonight I'm going to see the organisers about how this Forum can help the Festival and pehaps have something in the Goose Green fair on Sunday 13 May. I've mentioned it before but we would love to hear suggestions and ideas people have of how to represent the forum on the green, from just having a table and banner to a marquee with seats and some activities going on. So to copy and paste from a previous posting: "I'm thinking about having an East Dulwich Forum space at the Goose Green Festival, so I would like to hear your ideas how to create the Forum on Goose Green? What about a Speaker's Corner? How about a debating competition? Question and Answer session with Quaywe, Ibo, Huguenot, Snorky, DulwichMum (+ new entrant Jockey) and BatDog chaired by The Administrator? A blind taste-off between the different Indian Restaurants i.e. they all supply 3 types of dishes and people (ok, registered users) vote for the best ones. Then a drink-off where the local bars supply some of their beers and people vote for the best ones? Mud wrestling pit for the Mums? Stick the name to the face competition, a board with the faces of the users and you have to guess who they are? And an aftershow party somewhere nearby, I don't know where, but perhaps it could be sponsored by Upstairs at the EDT?" Please let me know if you can lend a big tent or have access to lots of seats and/or tables or just have great ideas (remembering the budget is ?tiny) I'm sure between the lot of us we can come up with something half decent. Either reply on here or feel free to send me a personal message or use the 'Email the forum' link at the bottom of the page. thanks
  14. when I went past the roundabout this morning there was a guy in a flourescent jacket standing there with a shovel looking at the hole. Has he done anything yet?
  15. How do you know ?
  16. horrah! the results are in, I've attached the questionnaire summary of results and the open ended answers (literals.pdf). (I'm sure there's going to be some classic answers in there but I haven't time to read them now). The email came from Ursula and said: "... I?ve just been given the go ahead to make the results public. I?ve attached them along with a summary. I?ll be alerting the users of Goose Green and Consultation respondents next week by email and poster etc. The summary was based on the Main sample and not the Booster sample because the latter was deemed a pre determined group. These booster sample results are interesting though and add weighting to various views held. |f you would like to discuss them at any point please email me or ring me. I work Mondays to Wednesdays, 9.15-3.15. A proposal for some changes is being put together at the moment and once ready I will let you know. Regards, Ursula"
  17. acerbic (ə-s?r'bĭk) pronunciation also a?cerb (ə-s?rb') adj. 1. Sour or bitter tasting; acid. 2. Sharp or biting, as in character or expression: ?At times, the playwright allows an acerbic tone to pierce through otherwise arid or flowery prose? (Alvin Klein). [From Latin acerbus.] just thought I put that there to save others having to look it up
  18. > Strange, I was going to sugest New Cross Gate. Bizarre, I was going to suggest Parramatta
  19. 'Julie', what other shops were in ED when you were here 12 years ago that have now gone? Which other local family run business do you miss?
  20. The drummer for 90's indie band Hurricane #1 is Gaz Farmer who lives up by the Gowlett. He's also the goal keeper for East Dulwich's Lordship Lane Sharks (you may have heard of them), who were recently promoted to Tuesday's Catford 5-a-side Powerleague first division.
  21. 12 years away from home eh Julie? You must have been really naughty.
  22. it's smokin'
  23. Le Moulin (up by the Plough/Library), we went there on Valentines day and it was great (not a heart shaped balloon in sight). It's a quiet, small French restaurant run by Margret and Eric and it's a step back in time (about 20 years). Clientele was generally 50ish and regulars ("bottle of the usual white please Margret"). Decor is pleasantly brown but it's very clean and they obviously look after the place. Food was OK, had a rack of lamb which was pleasant but the fact the protruding bones had those little, white, paper things on them that looked like small chef's hats made it more enjoyable. The lemon sorbet had a fanned out wafer in it like when you were a kid. It's not going to match other places for food but the experience was different and enjoyable. Like I said, there are regulars there and they're regular for a reason. It's a little gem of a place; we can't wait to take some visiting friends there for the experience. 2 of us x 3 courses + ?16 bottle of wine = ?40 + tip (it wasn't called a 'service charge' in the 80's) so no complaints there. I'd say if you're looking to move, it's another reason to do so.
  24. It seems odd that you're able to judge that EDKiwi was justifiably assaulted by the Panther Cars driver. Did you see this incident 'Bree'? I don't think so, I think it's probably that you're a couple of sandwiches short of a toolbox.
  25. a bar/cafe that has a download facility would be good. Hang out, have a few drinks, browse some tunes, plug in your mp3 player, download some music, off you go. Nice.
