The London Underground map, rearranged so that South London gets most of the stations, just makes you realise how little the tube serves South London. Is it a good idea to bring in a congestion charge where the public transport options are limited? http://www.colourcountry.net/colourcountry/content/South-London-Tube-Map/thumb.png It comes from this site

From the Urban Slang Dictionary: Caned: British slang for stoned, i.e. the effect you get from inhaling marijuana fumes. If you listened to the kidz you'd know what they're talking about. Ai.
-
I didn't say "ask them what it is they want", I said listen to what they have to say, there's a difference. I agree that they should be taught DISCIPLINE and RESPECT but I was suggesting that having a better understanding of the causes and culture may make for better teaching.

... by initially asking them for their thoughts and opinions, and listening to what they have to say.

I'm sorry that you read negative steroetyping that into my earlier comment but I was just drawing a picture of what happened. Who do I return rubbish to? Not three blokes in a sports car that could easily catch me that's for sure, it doesn't matter what colour it is.

If you knew about Operation Trident 'david', you would know that, in the Police's own words, "Trident was set up in 1998 to help bring an end to a spate of shootings and murders among young, black Londoners." Hmmm, I can't see them saying it's not a black issue there. In the real world that you mention, people already know about the issues you talk about, perhaps you should pay it a visit sometime and make some suggestions towards solutions.

Good halal indian restaurant in central London
Mark replied to Michael Palaeologus's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Top Table website allows you to search for Halal restaurants. The first one that comes up is La Porte des Indes, which I went to in December and it was excellent. Work paid for it so I don't know how much it cost. -
East Dulwich Fusion gym and pool are currently closed
Mark replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
...and as the roof's in a dangerous condition, no-one's been allowed on the gym floor to refurbish, mend or clean the equipment. Pleas can no-one go to the Waverly gym tonight as I would like to use it and there ain't enough room for the two of us. -
Yesterday as I was riding home from work on my scooter, I was coming up behind a car stopped at traffic lights and the front passenger threw his bottle of Lucozade (orange flava) out the window. Now I always stop, pick up the litter and politely give it back to the person in the car, or if they ignore me I throw it in the backseat. Sometimes they're really apologetic, sometimes they act like I've spat in their face, but yesterday, as there were three black guys in a Mercedes I decided not to. I don't like having to make that decision because I felt my well-being (and ability to attend a Valentines meal at Le Moulin which was great by the way) would have been under threat. I might be wrong and the passenger may have said "sorry, thank you for pointing out my error I must remember not to do it again" but my instinct said let it go that time. My point? Why does the guy in the car not know that throwing a bottle out of a car is wrong? I know it's petty but it's wrong. "Gives people jobs dunnit" Has he never seen the advert where the bloke puts the bottle down on the wall and says "I put it out the way" and in the next scene a little girls crying as she's knocked it off the wall and cuts herself. Why can't young people be taught the basics of right and wrong and respect? Anything to do with this report by the UN that puts the UK at the bottom of the league table for child well-being across 21 industrialised countries? Do happy children have more respect for their surroundings and others or do they just stab with a smile? I've no idea but if anyone says it's because they don't have god in their life will have to explain it thoroughly on another thread. I saw the yellow board outside the bank last night too. Bank robbers don't usually do jobs in their own area which means he (or she) is probably not an East Dulwich resident. And as the bank's a few hundred yards from our Police Station can I presume that the police were there within minutes?

Hi Matt Now, on my list of things to do for this site, I have 'create a field where people can write a bit about themselves so that it appears on their profile page'. God know when I'll get round to it though! Glad you like the site, thanks for using it Mark

We were walking past the East Dulwich Police Station at about half ten last night and there was an abandoned dog tied up to the scaffolding outside. The station was closed and so we used that yellow scuzzy phone on the side of the building to report it to the police. We were given the number for the RSPCA and told to call them. We called the RSPCA and after getting through their ridiculously annoying phone system were told, by answer message, that it?s the responsibility of the local authority dog warden. So directory enquiries gave us the switchboard number for Southwark council*, and we called them and were told that as it?s after 5pm it?s the police?s responsibility. So we called the police again on the scuzzy phone and they said a dog unit was on its way to collect it. I trust the dog?s now in safe hands but is there any point in having a police station that?s closed most of the time? Why are people petitioning to keep it open? What benefit does it have for the community? Is it just nice to be able to say ?there?s a police station in East Dulwich? but in reality it doesn?t serve much of a purpose? Maybe I'm just unaware of the fact that it's really busy in the daytime serving the local community? Could someone enlighten me please... * I should mention that Soutwark Council?s after hours emergency helpline (via the main switchboard number 020 7525 5000) was efficient and very helpful

Help! Our team the Lordship Lane Sharks (you may have heard of us) have had two players drop out and we desperately need a couple of players for tonight's game against Brockley FC. We play in Catford, 25 minutes each way, tonight's game is at 20:30 and I can give people a lift if they want. If you (or someone you know) can play please let me know as soon as possible on 07801 226 117 or send me a PM as otherwise we'll have to forfeit the game.

no way! Just picked up a flyer for the local gallery and you'll never guess what's on? I've attached a scan...

Imagine if someone opened an art gallery and lots of people came and enjoyed it (for free), then a few people came and painted graffiti over the walls and floor and ceiling and made it unwelcoming and said "it's a free gallery why can't we do what we want?". The (unpaid) caretaker replied "I like to keep this place tidy for everyone, I want it to be a nice place for as many people as possible and I'm afraid I don't want your crap graffiti everywhere as it detracts from the surrounding beauty. You may use that room over there, or that one over there for your art. Now excuse me while I scrub the nob and balls you have so humorously spray painted onto this canvas" and yet one of the hoodlums said "how dare you remove our crap graffiti... etc etc" I'm with the Administrator on this one ;-) and I've been told that now he's got his rant off his chest he's going to take a back seat for a while

From a sililar discussion on schools on this site: A report commissioned by the Department of Education and Skills from the London School of Economics says that "religious affiliation of schools has little impact on their results. Church of England and Roman Catholic schools have fewer children from poor backgrounds and are more likely to be targeted by pushy parents. The report focuses on the social intake and exam results of England?s 16,000 primary schools. ?There is clear positive selection of pupils into faith schools on the basis of observable characteristics that are favourable to education ? even when we compare pupils that originate in the same block of residential housing,? it says. ?Any performance impact from ?faith? schools in England seems to be closely linked to autonomous governance and admissions arrangements, and not to religious character.? The report says that pupils in religious schools are more likely to be white, and to have English as their first language and less likely to come from a family on a low income. The report found that voluntary aided schools (which are run by the church with public money) had some opportunity to covertly pick pupils based on what they could observe about pupils and their family background." Read the full report here (pdf) or on the Telegraph website In this modern age when reasonable people are trying to bring cultures together to live in harmony, it's a shame that they still bring up children in schools dominated by unfounded superstitious beliefs which install into children an 'Us' and 'Them' attitude.

I remember people discussing lack of/removal of trees on this site and in their publication put through my letter box the other day, the Lib Dems say "Tell us if your street needs more trees". So if you want more trees on your street tell your councillors, their contact details are on the local info page

there is a Catholic School search avaible on this site, and a more 'all seeing' search of all schools in the area on this 'schools finder' site

Bonnie, was your original post "a wind up" as Michael said? I'm intrigued how he knows... [edited once]

I gotta to get this off my chest: Put a space after a comma and a space after a full stop. I feel better now.

are they or aren't they, is there a point in rallying up over a rumour? I know that some people are requesting that double yellow lines are put in front of the sloping pavements to stop cars from parking in front of them and rendering their purpose pointless, but I did't know that it's already an offence.

what time's kick off?
-
...or you should have written "are not as good as " on the sign, and then told them how it's been defaced. Methinks they'd take it down very soon after.
-
I'd say that when it says "Sold" you can take it that it's sold. If you call them after 14 days and they say "ah ha, but it's not sold" then get them done for false advertising or kick their shins or something.
-
I see Dulwich Life magazine is charging one English pound for its publication now, I can't see that lasting for much longer.
-
by the way, if there's an Estate Agents board outside a property that says Sold or Let (not For Sale or To Let) it should not be outside a property beyond 14 days from the the sale/letting date. If it's longer than that and it annoys you, you can call the estate agent and ask them to take it down, they have to (Town and Country Planning Act).
