Yep precisely. I do use buses, but not for time critical journeys where I have a set deadline or appointment. They're not reliable enough. Hope ???? enjoyed his ride with Joe Punchclock of the post room. ;-)
  2. Exactly, I'm not being snobby - it's obvious that buses serve a different demographic as Jeremy mentions: the elderly, school kids, those with kids, those not in a hurry, lower income groups due to bus pass prices, better for the disabled etc etc - commuters in peak hours I would not count among these. 'Get up earlier' is a straw man, not an actually meaningful solution to travel issues. Otherwise, why not all just walk everywhere?
  3. It might be a bit better at weekends if the Blackfriars train went through via Kings Cross, which would give a few more options. The bus is not a substitute, it's unpredictable, uncomfortable and not everybody has a spare hour to sit in traffic. Different demo though, so happy for buses to continue for their purpose.
  4. Can they both not exist? Close yes, but very different catchments. Although it would lessen the case for the Bakerloo coming this direction! But would be a relatively easy one. Maybe if the Bakerloo tracks do head to Burgess Park, they could have a Walworth Rd station at least before turning off towards Old Kent Road. It wouldn't help ED that much, but might be easier and quicker to connect from bus to Bakerloo there than the awful current Elephant arrangements.
  5. Agreed on both cinemas surviving ok. One is a cheap and dirty 'blockbuster and out' (excellent for cheap 3D films too), the other will be more of an experience, with the bar, better service etc... How about we let the market decide rather than doom everything off the bat... especially with rubbish weekend train services (and none to the West End), the more diversions in the local area for leisure time, the better.
  6. The buses around Camberwell and up the Walworth Road alone make the case for this - must be about 10 different routes! I saw plans for the Old Kent Road route, which is quicker to New Cross which I think was the big aim. Perhaps Camberwell and Peckham could be served by a shorter branch and the whole line could have two halves? Even if we only had 12 trains per hour (Bakerloo is 24) that would still be a great improvement. And don't the lines at Elephant already extend some way down the Walworth Road?
  7. God people are callous. Can you not keep your backhanded, snide advice to yourselves for once? Every burglary or mugging thread has a passive-aggressive insinuation of blame. Leaving your coat on a chair in a library isn't the same as leaving it on the table of a pub! 9 days out of 10 it would be fine, but this was just bad luck.
  8. I find it as shame as some backstreet pubs (like the Gowlett) can still work, although I wonder how profitable they are. But I think it would probably need to hit a different demo to the previous incarnation and be a bit more like the Victoria Inn... decent food, wifi, child friendly, craft rather than camra beers etc etc
  9. Otta, they're just numbers. I know 500k/1m seem symbolic, but it just creeps up and happens. I couldn't believe when someone I knew paid 250k for a one bed flat, but now it would be a steal. People are aren't idiots for buying 500k houses which then become 1m houses. The people that don't are surely the fools.

Which came first - product of bad luck/unfortunate upbringing, or the opportunism and greedy to scam a few lazy quid through lies?
  11. She sounds interesting, and that she's actually lived a life. People in politics should represent all parts of society. I'd be keen to hear what she stands for though, locally and nationally. Better someone a bit kooky than another career politician, a bored law firm partner or shiny grad scheme twerp like Chuka.
  12. Where we are (Ivanhoe/Grove Hill Rd triangle) seems to be mental. ?1m houses are not a rarity and it's quite scary stuff. I guess it's also overspill from the Grove Park/Camberwell Grove market as well as ED/Bellenden ones. But on the other hand, if you get ?1m for your house, then it is worth that. And property doesn't have a static value, nor do areas. They're constantly evolving and shifting, so you could never say it's "too much" because the market dictates that. And you can guarantee corresponding areas are going up similarly so it's not unique to the area. Anyone tempted by the HS1 Javelin trains? Could have a palace by Seasalter!
  13. The Crooked Well is the best place to eat in the area, bar none. The Camberwell Arms will give them a run for their money. Victoria Inn roast is decent too.
  14. May also be to try and see if you're out, or alternatively - to do a recce on what is within grabbing distance from your front door. So rather than ignoring it, it's best to always open (have a good chain fitted) to get them to bugger off. And don't keep car keys/phones/loose change within eyesight and reach of the front door or letterbox.
  15. Major lols to the post talking about evangelicals and yam eating. So true - you'd think human culture (London especially) should be static and not evolve. What about all the middle class white folk pushed out of Brixton post-Windrush!? Should the new black population have not opened up patty shops etc and respected the white culture of the time?! Ridiculous. Bellenden Road is ace. I worry it'll get a bit LL, but for the moment, it's independent, not packed with chains/estate agents/buses and enterpreneurial. Nowt wrong with a good, indie coffee shop or deli. Not everything has to be appropriate to all income levels and common tastes! Rye Lane and the High Street are still there for the local community and aren't going anywhere. Louisa, you can pick up your fish heads and get your weave did with aplomb. Oh wait, you're just a (likely middle class) a keybaord warrior, not a member of the 'real Peckham'.

I don't know it that well but what a first impression and a sign. The bits around Ladywell/Crofton Park/Hither Green stations is cheaper and less rough - unless you're at the Catford and Lewisham ends. Crystal Palace seems a popular one these days too.

  18. Gumption seems to be lacking in this case. OP ignored the many serious responses (erm, call them... and so on) and went victim-y on the slight ribbing. Bet the sign is still there and no calls have been made though. Can we see a picture of this non-standard, elephantine sign, with scaling? It sounds gargantuan compared to the 1000s of others that we are all au fait with and have tackled. How on Earth would we win the war today etc...
  19. I can't understand the passiveness of people that would have this sitting in their garden for 2 year before querying it?! Comedic fish slap needed. Bin it for heaven's sake...or take it down to LL and drop it off at the agents if you can be arsed.
  20. Yes I believe you can. But call them to be 100%. Many out of town stores are 24 hour which includes booze.
  21. Have done so, including requesting trains until midnight from Victoria (Mon-Sat) rather than an incremental lateness, and a decent service on Sunday too.
  22. An update: http://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/news/latest-news/southeastern-consults-on-changes-to-timetable-in-december-2014/ and a PDF at the bottom of that. But in short: - Later Dartford via DH/PR trains, Mon-Sat - No mention of Sunday just yet. - Victoria to Gillingham trains (some of which stop at DH in morning peak, i.e. the wonderfully clean and quiet 08:30) to stop off-peak hourly too, giving three trains each hour to DH. Will become Dover trains, so a direct train from the area out to Bromley, Faversham, Canterbury and Dover - might be useful?
  23. Not to mention whatever floods might have happened, even last week. It's too tenuous. Heathrow is in the best place, objectively. It's a pain living under the paths sometimes though. But it's part of what makes up London and its economy and success.

I wouldn't assume anything about burglary. Yes it could be kids, but no harm opening the door or being a bit more on guard - especially if you read this forum and see all the various ways, tricks and yes, times.
  25. Tell him to f*** off and if he persists, pepper spray him square in the boat. Having reported him to the Police beforehand, and documented how you've felt threatened in your own property.
