  1. I thought he'd popped his clogs. Esp when listening to the radio, news comes on and the presenter adopts that special 'hushed' tone they usually reserved for such events. Mick Mac's thread title doesn't help.

Uncanny. This is simply amazing! Good work sir. May I be as bold to suggest you had 'Shoot from the Hip' by Lloyd Cole & the Commotions on your brainpod when you started this fine thread? Which, come to think of it, is not unlike a rather sophisticated version of the song game thread. I would insert a smiley emoticon here if it wasn't for the fact I know you dislike them so.
  4. where's Huguenot when you need him? *dials Fisk Police*
  5. I've keeled over too and haven't even finished reading the first post but just wanted to say "Warm welcome back HB!" *goes back to reading thread, tries (and fails) to regain composure*
  6. thank you for my first venture into the wonder that is EDF's 'for sale' section. Much respect to dulwichcookie. If I wasn't so bloody far away I'd be having that grey filing cabinet, let me tell you!

oh wow thank you to everyone for fab suggestions and replies! lots to check out. yes, I have been to Boss Man, great selection there and a real asset to LL. daveR - yep the rake bar is a fave of mine too. never manage to get a seat inside but like all good pubs, you never have to wait that long to get served, no matter how packed the bar area is. am particularly interested to find out more about london microbreweries so cheers for that netts and voyageur, place in crystal palace sounds fab as does kernel brewery. I find I have to search out nice delis/specialist vintners to pick up local beers/microbrewery beers altho supermarkets sell more choices nowadays. maybe i am a sucker for nice packaging & labels dulwichfox!! I think I want to grow my own hops, go on a mashing course and sell beer for the rest of my life...:)) PS oooooh i loved Louisa on the street food thread, its all fun stuff. we can still appreciate street food, no? good debate was had.
  10. then you're okay Sue, that sounds perfectly balanced :))

sorry if you hate the term but I don't know what else to call it. I love trying out new beers/ales from the microbreweries that are out there. A cheeky bottle of St. Andrew's Brewing Co Crail ale went down nicely recently. I am not an expert btw just find it fun trying something new. anyone else got any others worthy of a mention?

Presumably you're > going to need to do that anyway to maintain your > weight once you reach your target? ahahahahaha jeremy, don't be so silly, what a ludicrous suggestion! healthy diet every day AND exercise, now there's a thing ;-) here's some more analysis on the diet (aside from last sentence, it comes across as fairly unbiased)- http://www.zoeharcombe.com/2013/04/the-2-day-diet/#utm_source=feed&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=feed gist (I think) is this bit: "I love maths, but I would lose the will to live even trying to work out one so-called non diet day of the triple simultaneous equation that would be my carb/fat/protein number and size of portions ? even allowing for the fact that the diet doesn?t know fats from proteins or carbs. This is a 7 day diet, delivering barely a quarter of the calorie intake needed on 2 days of the week. That?s 30% of your life starving and 100% of your life on a diet ? counting portions and measuring out 80g of vegetables. Don?t do it! This is obsessive and miserable and it?s proven to lose an average of 0.5lb a week ? if you stick to the diet for 6 months. Then we don?t know if you will regain. I can confidently forecast that you will need to stay on this kind of restrained eating for life or you will regain ? you will have trained your body to maintain on a lower calorie intake. Or you could just eat real food (meat, fish, eggs, dairy, vegetables, fruits in season and whole grains in moderation); three times a day and get on with your life."

Haggerston easy to get to from Peckham Rye on overground :) Here's mine - http://netilmarket.tumblr.com shack alley, lots to choose from.
  14. news just in: Pret's 'sandwich of the month', jellied eel on white parsley sourdough.
  15. hot dogs are now 'gourmet' and can only be eaten with champagne, y'know. fried chicken shops are now ...oh I can't be arsed. anyone got any street food recommendations? Maybe I'll start up my own mobile frittata service and make loads of money from the rich folks of ED.

  17. perhaps I'm being a bit dim but am not clear where sense of humour comes into this? isn't it rather patronising to assume that people should need to comment on the appropriateness (or otherwise) of this particular challenge, in order to understand a bit more about global poverty and hunger?
  18. there are good pie & mash shops and there are rubbish pie & mash shops. there are good street food stalls and there are rubbish street food stalls. not everyone that frequents trendy, over-priced, 'organic' street food markets is a 'hipster', not every 'traditional working-class person' frequents pie & mash shops. in the foodie heaven that is now exmouth market, the poor old pie & mash shop that was there for donkeys has finally shut up shop. my (working-class) friend & generations of her family that grew up in that area never went there tho. so I don't think you can blame EVERYTHING on the hipster blow-ins, easy as it may be to blame them for the changing face of an area.

  20. "sausages-inna-bun, rats-onna-stick, meat pies & mustard" ... for some reason this thread is reminding me of good ol' CMOT dibbler. *cut-me-own-throat if you're not a pratchett fan.

Why...yes, I think I possibly have. It certainly makes a pleasant change from the monotony of 'kitchen food, lovingly bought & prepared by myself at home' every night of the week.

  23. still haven't tried this Little Bird gin!! didn't they used to sell it in Franklins? the name has changed now but think it was the same stuff.

No thanks. well its clearly not for everyone but you might as well say 'restaurant-quality' food as 'restaurant-priced'. I've got a huge amount of respect for the hard-working,dedicated street food sellers who focus on quality and provenance. You can tell that some of them really care so much about what they are doing, its really admirable. and we get to try some really lovely different types of food. It's nice to treat yourself to something new to try. Although I've had a disappointing experience too with one that didn't live up to the hype. Same can happen with restaurants tho.
