  1. Hi all Any idea if there are any alternatives to the RSPCA locally? I just called about a fox I had seen outside ED station at about 8.10. They say they can?t come out unless I have caught the animal or am watching it (I.e. it is in my garden), which, although frustrating, I understand as animals do move, especially wild ones. He/she was out at an unusual time of day though, and limping, and was very close to the road so I?m concerned it could be injured further or cause an accident.
  2. Yep - I've found them to be exceedingly rude in there too. I went to drop off some items some weeks ago and was also met with an unhelpful staff member who acted exceedingly rudely. I get that they are volunteers but some service training surely wouldn't go amiss. No point spending so much renovating a store when your staff act as if it is below them to interact with the public! I take my things to St Christopher's clothes shop now and think the ladies in there are lovely and polite, even when they are busy.
  3. I loved the artwork they had up in the restaurant - hope they will be keeping it... or some of it!
  4. Just popped into Mind at the top of lordship lane with a small bag of items - pretty surprised by their attitude. I asked if I may leave my bag and the woman sighed audibly, said "I suppose you may" and and pointed to the ground. I said I could take it somewhere else if it was too much trouble - and she sighed again and said "as long as it's not books, we'll manage". I shouldn't care - it's about donating goods so that a worthy charity makes money....but it really annoyed me, so I took it to st Christopher's instead (the smaller one on lordship lane). Anyway, the ladies were nice, and actively asked me to sign up for gift aid. I had a dress in there with tags still on so I'm pleased my donation will mean slightly more money is raised.
  5. Yes, I have seen him a number of times. The first several months ago - I gave him some money, I've wondered a few times since about whether he was visiting a friend in the hospital, or sleeping rough and getting help from the Salvation Army. I've seen him on/off, perhaps every other week since. I wonder how he has ended up here - it's so odd that I have questioned whether it is genuine or just a story for passers by.
  6. Louisa - I don't think that's necessarily true! For example - dulwich fox has posted for years about his love for animals, including how they care for local wildlife and also (if I remember correctly) how they avoid certain animal products like foie gras because it is cruel. I don't perceive that any decision to eat enriched cage chicken is down to a disregard of animal welfare, just not really believing that free range is that much better. I think it is better - better for the animal but also better for you! I'm not pretending I am spending/wasting money to make myself feel better. I pay more per kilo but consume less overall.
  7. I agree with you Fox - we can never be sure and in an environment where restaurants are pushed to cuts costs in order to trim margins, it's quite likely that if it isn't listed as free range/organic, what you are buying won't be. But I think that is different to a restaurant charging a higher price for free range but then not providing that. I believe that the chicken in Hisar will be free range because they advertise it as such. Raising an animal free range genuinely does give a better standard of living- it costs more to provide better welfare standards, and this manifests in a higher price for meat. It also means that produce raised in this manner has higher protein and lower levels of fat (meat) and in eggs, lower levels of cholesterol.
  8. Sometimes I can't figure out if you are real! I understand what free range is: I have been to a free range farm. I have also been to a farm that kept caged hens, completely de-beaked. I try and make the choice, wherever possible, to eat free range meat. If I'm at home, I buy organic. Yes - it means my meat isn't cheap.... so I just eat less of it. I'd rather pay for a product that tastes better. However I think we are getting away from the main point, which is that somewhere quoted you close to ?9 for free range chicken - which you maintain is a label that ordinarily has little bearing on price. Just as a little test of that, I looked at Sainsbury's- their free range chicken breast fillet is priced at ?16.75 per kilo. Non free range? ?6.63. Organic, in case you wonder is ?19.50. Edited - for grammar, spelling & unintentional curtness

Well said Sue! The chicken at Hisar IS free range, and it says so very clearly on all their menus in the restaurant - take away or not!
  10. I know this is off topic but I couldn't resist.....What's been banned is the sale of new stocks of hoovers that produce more noise and heat than suction...how is that a bad thing? A lot of manufacturers spend time making products "sound" more big and powerful than they actually are - meaning the machine costs more to run as it's less efficient and uses more energy! Turning now to finding milk in DV - I remember when I first moved I went down to the village as I had heard so much about it....I thought I was completely lost, and asked a passer by where all the high street shops were - they directed me back to East Dulwich!
  11. I think Natty is a guy from some previous posts(pre the two current threads on here) but perhaps I'm thinking of another user. Not that this would explain either of the above posts.
  12. The current glamorous nails have a sign on their door to say they will be relocating.
  13. R. Soles was also on the kings road, inbound. https://rsoles.com
  14. ... and as we have found out, on your front doormat. Nothing compared to that soft squelch when you hurriedly step out of your house in the morning running for the train. 🙁
  15. Thanks for posting MP - hope you are ok, not harmed, not too shaken?
  16. If you're raising the roof - is that not then a mansard roof (even if for less than a full storey)? I think Southwark have historically been quite "anti" raising roof levels in the area. If your neighbours roof line is higher than yours (I.e. Their roof is currently higher in altitude than yours) or there is another property on your road with a raised roof line then you may have a more successful outcome.
  17. I've really enjoyed everything I have had in peddler - and the food is great too! It really depends what you are partial to. The French house mixed me a very refreshing take on an aperol spritz while I was in there last week, and it's really laid back so you might like to try a few aperitifs with an appropriate snackette (olives, saucisson etc) in there!
  18. Does anyone have any idea when this might end? I've spent some time looking online for any sign of a resolution... but nada!
