  1. re: mothers and toddlers. sounds like a grand idea but to be honest, what time do you open in the mornings? i think the bishop have it right unlike EDT. edt picked an afternoon at a time when many kids are asleep. the bishop just keep a whole chunk of the pub non smoking during the day and the staff are great with the kids during the day. all you need to do is stock some organix snacks, make good coffee and let it be known that there is a lovely non smoking section that kids can run about in. a bit of cake for the mums wouldn't go amiss either ... i have 2 kids just a few doors down from you and my sister is about to have one so we would definitely be in there of a morning. one thing though, i've not checked out your wheel chair/ push chair access, i'm only familiar with the entrance on ivanhoe road. how easy is it to get in? i should really just pop in and ask you!
  2. it's a pants revolution on the high street, as the americans say: you're either with us trouser boy or you're against us ...
  3. are your friend fully practicing freegans then? i can imagine that a local M&S or Waitrose certainly provides a higher quality of fresh food thrown out compared to other competitors. have you eaten meals prepared by them?
  4. your ignorance is excused as i have only just read about it on the web, but i had read about it in a few articles. the principle is that as a society as a whole we throw away too much and beyond recycling and freecycle you can feed yourself perfectly well by using good food thrown away by shops.
  5. if you are do you go pick up any good stuff in east dulwich? i'd like to hear from anyone who is
  6. just looking on the white stuff website, this is back on thread subject, i hope that they're not planning to build a shop like the ones on the site. that would be a terrible eyesore on LL, even more so than the unit as it is now. i don't like it when shops strip any of the character out of the old shop front (not that this is the case with the old walsh building) but this does not seem to have affected the shop fronts down northcross road.
  7. even though this has nothing to do with the thread i will pitch in that michael hodges and time out in general have funny debate about back of bus juke box. seems to split people evenly between: they're just teenagers leave them alone to get on with their petty rebellion, or, if it bothers you say something. personally smoking on buses is the one that gets me ... i always say something. however, even when i was 7 months pregnant an italian argued me off the bus when i asked him to put it out.
  8. ha ha back of the bus juke box, at least the kids aren't interested in hanging out on the street of ED. man, if someone complains that there aren't any hoodies any more due to houseprices/phil and teds/gastro pubs i'll just give up ... move to sw2 if you're worried about gentrification, i'm putting my rep on the line here and saying i like this phase.
  9. ok, just looked them up. a clothing shop that looks more like it belongs in old street. now there's an area where the locals have lost out to development...
  10. right, sorry i am the last person to know. what is a white stuff? is it (a) one of those interior decor shops that sells only white towels and linen or (b) sports shop? again, please excuse the ignorance. i think east dulwich is settling into a new phase that probably is not going to change that radically from now, apart from escalating housing costs. walsh really was the last unit on LL that was big enough and apart from that eyesore the rest of the neighbourhood has only increased in charm yet retaining the DIY store, newsagents etc... it's all good and i'm sure there is much the same debate going on in herne hill but i can guarantee that all my friends in brixton are quite envious that they are not benefitting from any gentrification. that's my friends over 30, we are after all woefully old and unhip ...
  11. bob, i totally agree with you. let's see what the refurb achieves ...
  12. Blimey, this forum is full of contradictions, we want the old days of grime and grit, but we want it to look good, we don't want chains but seem over the moon when it is hinted that starbucks may open opposite the station (refer to other threads). i just don't get it. also, there are still plenty of units sitting empty on LL that no one is touching: ED is not and never will be the new islington, chelsea or clapham, stop being so negative and move to brixton if you want a reality check. east dulwich is a lovely place to live that will never seriously interest the big retailer because as suggested above the units just don't fit and the local economy just isn't attractive enough. everyone just needs to calm down, enjoy living in a nice nieghbourhood and stop complaining all the time. as for changes, what is going on with the old walsh glazing unit? it looks dreadful and all the work has halted.
  13. i think all the kids find it far more fun to hang out at mcdonalds in either camberwell, peckahm or brixton than they do outside sea cow or green and blue...east dulwhich is pretty joyless for the average teenager. to reply to the question regarding the estate since the 80's: apparently yes it was a lot rougher until the council cleared out the trouble. by the mid 90's (or there about) it became the place we know now. there is an odd block just at the beginning of ivanhoe road end of pytchley which is due for demolition, it's out of character with the rest of the estate and will be replaced with a new block.
  14. it's all fine (the walks you ask about). the empty flats, according to a local councillor, have just been or are about to be signed off to a housing corp to provide key worker homes. i think they remained boarded up as southwark had to make their mind up: keep or destroy the estate. then the council is refurbing the rest. i often walk along the railway tracks around the back of the estate and i have encountered no trouble at all in over a year and a half. dog kennel primary school is one of the best and the local community as a whole is a good mix. also consider that there are now 2 sets of 'luxury' flats on the hill which is surely a reflection that the estate is no problem. however, you can hear the locals moaning about escalating house prices...but judging by this forum it sounds like everyone is complaining!
  15. we live there, with se5 postcode. moving from brixton i was sick and tired of noise polution, dealing, anti social behaviour etc... so i was careful about checking out the estate at different times of day. i was pleased to realise that it's fine and actually rather calm and nice. the kids still play on the street outside their houses in the surrounding victorian terraces (how rare is that these days) and you are in the ideal position of being next to the train station, bellenden road and LL. the estate is also going to benefit from a major refurb. i highly recommend the area, plus it's not over inflated in price compared to se22 postcodes.
  16. starbucks is for people who don't like to drink coffee but frothy milk instead. give me a pret any day, they make better food and the black coffee isn't burnt.
  17. i like the idea of 'tubeshower' . i can see it now on a LDN news package. But, would there be first and second class? first maybe a power shower with door that closes, second a bucket of water and bin liner for protection. Would travel card/oyster card users get preferential treatment? would ken give free showers out of rush hour to london's great unwashed and teenagers? tube or no tube, who cares, commuting to work is a pig which ever way you go ...
  18. sorry, but it's trams (future), buses and trains for us. to be honest i'm happy with that. the tube makes it too easy for 'others' to come and polute a neighbourhood. not that camberwell doesn't have it's fair share of 'interesting' people.
  19. it would appear that because we are not lamenting the arrival of a chain/a dog spotted on goose green/or if ED is too posh this thread is soon to die ... and there i was thinking aliens and elvis really were front page news. maybe if i say 'alien spotted drinking frapaciono (sp?) whilst being driven around in foxtons mini' someone will pick up ... oh and he came by the equally believable tube in camberwell.
  20. my god, elvis works in the DIY store opposite the station selling a great line in old school brooms ...
  21. aliens would back the rumour that tom cruise is planning to open a scientology theme park in the place of peckham rye ...
  22. Ant Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- a single lane in > the middle for all other traffic that operates on > a permanent contraflow basis. > > > > (May not be 100% trufax) who would have right of way? going north or going south? will there be a 10 year multi million pound consultation that no one will reply to but to include lots of glossy shots of ED?
  23. first bus times, then estate agents...setting the thread on fire.
  24. apparently putin, bored of russia, has bought up LL but much to his annoyance dubya has invested in northcross road. fighting will break out as the U.S. stop the russians from satisfying their sugar fix by denying access to hope and greenwood. bush will live in said shop thinking that he has been transported by a time machine to the 40's. expect the newly built eurostar terminal on goose green to become a war zone, over taken by sincere international press talking drivel and drinking the area dry. visas will be required to gain entrance to ED which putin will have sold to alfayed. in turn mohammed has plans to destroy LL to create a massive memorial to dodi and diana. trust no one.
