Often when going to pubs with beer gardens, you are asked to pay at the bar when ordering, which makes perfect business sense and doesn't imply those sitting outside are criminals who will do a runner, but people do, I suspect, make a genuine mistake and leave without paying. McDonalds is also a business that makes you pay before you get your food, do you object to their business practice too (although I do object to their food lol) The tip is an interesting one and you can always leave them cash after you've eaten if you feel that's better. Maybe tell the staff about the Buddha bowl rather then posting on a public forum. Feedback direct to a business is always better then posting about it after.

One of the candidates for PM is proposing a £10 fine for not attending hospital or doctor appointments Avoiding missed appointments where doctors are left with empty slots is an obvious way to ensure some efficiency in the NHS, but there are also obvious issues with such a scheme. 1. How will it be enforced, will receptionists sit there with a card machine next time you go in demanding payment? Or will it be a letter and how will it be followed up if you refuse to pay ? 2. I've often had appointment letters either not arrive or arrive after the event, what then? Would I be fined for not attending an appointment I didn't know about ? 3. What about the times I've arrived at an appointment to be told the doctor is absent or overbooked and I've got to rebook? Should I then be paid for them missing my appointment? 4. What about patients using hospital transport that fails to turn up or gets them there too late for their appointment? Who pays the £10,then? So many concerns and also feels like the slippery slope to privatisation.

In answer to Sue, no stats but my and my partners parents both don't use Internet banking, they are all 80 plus and prefer going into a branch to do things In answer to jen.., I speak for my parents generation so not using elders as a stick to bash with In terms of paying in via the post, the issue there is that I have to request a paying in slip to be sent to me which takes about a week then whilst I could post it, with the state of deliveries recently and the additional cost of stamps it's not a great option. Simple solution is not to close all banks in a town and work with the population rather than an accountant at head office closing it to save a few Bob

Ex People aren't using it simply because to get to it they have to slog up hills either side It's not a case of cyclists wanting to use it but it's dangerous, it's a genuine concern that even when installed they still won't use it unless they have the legs of the incredible hulk to get up the hills to get to it. That depends on multiple factors with age being one. Most older folk don't do online banking or don't trust it so for them a branch is essential. For me, I recently got sent a refund cheque which sat there for 6 weeks till I had justification to go to a centre where my bank branch was as the costs associated with travelling (be it bus or car) made it expensive to deposit a small cheque. The issue with closing all branches is that it alienates portions of the public who need a physical bank the most and makes it harder for those who do want to visit a branch to do so as there are no longer local branches !

No one is objecting, they are simply questioning if it is a justified scheme giving how many cyclists actually use the route. If it's not justified then the money could be better spent elsewhere.

My question relates to the simple point that if cyclists don't use it, will a cycle lane be good value for money ? As said, I can see the need in some traffic calming, but is there justification for a cycle lane? A slightly more expensive, but possibly ground breaking could be to reopen the old train tunnels under Sydenham Hill and make them cycle and walking highways, allowing cyclists to avoid the hills to get to the other side of Crystal Palace.

Maybe, like the traffic, he hoped the report would evaporate away. Oh hang on, the traffic didn't either... It does raise the question of what a Freedom of Infornatiom request on the LTN schemes would reveal ?

I'm curious, with the big hills leading up to Sydenham Hill, is it popular with cyclists up there ? Traffic calming is possibly needed which is independent of my question.

Interesting issue as some banking apps (Santander for one) don't have the facility to scan cheques so you are forced to either go to a branch or request a paying in slip to be sent to you and then pay in via the post office... sheer madness 😠

Possibly devolved powers from the DVLA https://insidedvla.blog.gov.uk/2021/06/29/dvla-working-with-local-authorities-and-police-services-to-take-action-on-unlicensed-vehicles/ But it's my speculation over what they could be doing as just checking where a car owner lives is potentially a misuse of their contract with the DVLA unless they are seeking enforcement action against the car and driver It's the same principle why police can't randomly search their database for friends or family without just cause.

I think, that if your assumption is correct, then it's a clear breech of GDPR rules as the council have not got a legal reason to do so (legal reasons include enforcing parking infringements, moving traffic violation ...) Just seeing where a car owner lives without a legal reason could get them into hot water. I wonder if there's a different reason, for example checking MOT and TAX status?

There's a report on the London BBC website today that says Southwark will not exclude pupils for bad behaviour unless they put another child's safety at risk. BBC News - Southwark schools agree not to exclude students https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-62213675 I'm in two minds over this, whilst it removes potential education disruption for the pupil who would have been expelled, especially if it's caused by learning difficulties, autism or ADHD, but it could lead to disruption to other pupils and also give further incentive to pupils to misbehave because nothing of consequence will happen to them. I wonder how the disruptive pupils will fare in the work environment after?
