Scratched cars on CP Road and North Cross Road
adonirum replied to WrightC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
@Sue You state...we've no idea why scratced cars...not possible to generalise.....don't leap to conclusions....but you probably hit the nail on the head when you stated...yes he might be a nasty little shit... remember the original posting mentions a total of eleven vehicles. How can this be anything other than unacceptable, as @KK wrote in his last post. I accept and take on board all your other view points, but the extent of the offending ie: the total numbers involved, surely give us the answer. A sustained course of action taking a period of time rather than a one off aberration ? -

@ KK Def not what I am advocating -no punishment- after all I started by stating "Well said DulwichFox". I would, in fact, advocate the strongest possible sentence. I was merely pointing out and agreeing with @Sue that this course of behaviour does indeed happen, as in the same manner appeasement also leads to further offending because the perpetrator will see themselves as having "got away with it". I was trying to point out the completely perverse, chip-on-the-shoulder that these types often have, and it probably stays with them from the cradle to the grave, this "I hate authority, I hate society, I hate people, I hate myself" attitude that we all owe them something/ a living. Jeremy Kyle fodder for the future I strongly suspect. -

I agree, this would be a somewhat similar scheme. HOWEVER, @Sue on Nov 15th makes a very very good and valid point, to paraphrase, "have the reverese effect - piss him off he does worse things". There is considerable evidence that this is precisely what happens in a lot of cases, the perpetrator feels so aggrieved that they continue to "hit out at society" in whatever way they can as a form of, in their perverse way of thinking, getting even with the rulers that have so wronged them ie: punishment after being caught. -
Thanks for that confirmation AndyC. I have already alluded to this on another thread on this forum, but have you seen the asking price for the (converted) flats at the North Cross Rd site? I appreciate that it is an old characterful building and they are probably very well appointed, but a million pounds!, for some quintessentially redundant classrooms!Crazy London and crazy E.D. property prices. However, good luck to the owners if they realise that sort of money. Wish I'd kept my old house in Thompson Road. Makes me wonder what that might fetch these days.

Otta, sadly have to admit it was tad before yourself, I left in 1971, but at least not as long ago as AndyC - sorry AndyC !! Is the school now based in Adys Road ? I have not checked it out for myself, but seem to recall being told in the distant past that it occupied the site of the old Thomas Carlton secondary school.

I have just remembered another "blast from the past" in that part of E.D. Anyone recall the sweet shop/newsagents on the corner of CPR and Upland, later a wood yard/merchants and now home to a bookies. Mr. & Mrs. Beattie. His name was Gordon and he was a gentle, quiet man. Mrs. Beattie was called Bessie, can't recall if that was her actual name or a nick-name due to the fact she was quite a large lady. A very indomitable character, used to give the police officers from the old station on the opposite corner a piece of her mind (and then some), and, even though they were proper hardened men in the force in those days, they daren't answer back!!!
-
Otta Don't recall actually being based at the hall for classes just going there for the gym-type sessions with the old apparatus that used to be pulled away from the wall, with its climbing ropes etc. Jah Lush You're quite right, it was Lacon Road, that is the one I was referring to, just got names of roads mixed up after all these years. ???? As AndyC said, the character Bronco, whom I was referring to, was in his 60's/70's back in the 1970's so chances are not the same person. Steveo You're quite right, forgot all about George having that "roller"

Hi Otta There was also the Scouts and Cubs (which I attended) that used to meet at what was then called The Epiphany Hall in Bassano Street and had its connection and ties with St. John's and St. Clement's School in North cross Road.

Just come acros this thread due to the recent posting and being a relative newcomer to the forum (and spending to much time on the "service L.L. thread"!!). What great memories. I realise some of this thread goes back a considerable amount of time but.. 1) Does anyboby remember the character at D.H.F.C. known as "Bronco" with his ditinctive white hat and his deafening bellow in shouting his support. I remember him being so incensed at one game that he had a real go at the referee who whistled for the police officer in attendance at the ground to remove him, unaware that he went to said officers house for tea after the game - P.C. Johnson cant remember first name about six and a half foot tall. Remember George Hammond as well, whilst referring to police officer, a true proper gentleman, ex- guardsman mop of blonde hair if I recall correctly. Police Officers , prison officers and his old regiment all queued to give blood for his extensive transfusions. 2) The war memorabilia shop on North Cross once had a dental crown claiming it to be Hitler's front tooth. 3) Joe's furniture shop on the other side of NorthCross 4) The off licence on the corner of North Cross and Ulverscroft 5) I remember Elvis taking over from his father George, so we really all did meet the bloke down the chip shop swears he's Elvis!! 6) Ken's sweet shop was "Ye Olde Tuck Shop" and he moved to Southend-on-Sea to a premises with exactly the same name. So many wonderful memories to read about and recall on my recent return to E.D. after an absence of more than two decades.

Ah yes, DML Contracting ( Steve Thorpe)..... Anyone remember them as Decorating Masters Limited with Dave Thorpe in charge ( Steve's father). They occupied the property on the corner of Northcross and Fellbrigg, now Delmar Glazer Solicitors and the Vintage Shop in their old stores yard. If anyone does remember them..... just saying that's all. -
Oh no....To save you all the bother, that really was a mistake.."that I have wrote about" please amend to " that I wrote about" or "that I have written about" Goodbye. Adonirum

Oh dear, that response would appear to indicate some embarrassment or feelings of humiliation. This was not, nor ever has been, my intention. I suspect the E.D.Forum community will be able to draw their own learned conclusions from this exchange. For my part, this will be my last post on this thread, but I will once again re-iterate that the experience that I have wrote about is an honest, truthful and accurate account of what transpired in Chener books on that particular day.

Fish You need to get a grip. Firstly, I have never used the language of violence against women. On one of your previous posts you advised me to "go read it really read it" with reference to one of my posts. You need to do likewise and read my original post properly and not put your own unique interpretation on it. I clearly refer to a" verbal altercation" if you will, an occurrence that was instigated by said lady, and for no earthly reason, other than her what might be called prejudices and, in any event certainly pre-conceived ideas, regarding the way an individual dressed. Secondly, I would refer you to your own posts on this thread -page 1 on 29th Oct @12.55 -page 2 @06.48 - and also page 4 on 1st Nov @ 04.49 and you have the audacity to vilify me for promulgating my personal experience. Have you not yet realised that in referring to "slapdown", describing myself as "extremely articulate and erudite", and then deliberately submitting something to the contrary, I have shown how people are/can be, in that , by admirably leaping to the defence of this individual, they then take precisely the course of action they are ridiculing me for. I do not seek to show up any individual during my research, but you seem to have taken this personally. I refer to previous in this thread, whereby at one stage I thought you had it. This is now said in all sincerity, try reading "Status Anxiety" by Dr. Alain de Button, this may aid you in understanding and indeed give you some insight into your own traits and characteristics. I wish you all the best and all that you would wish for yourself. Adonirum

All the foregoing is very good advice, coupled with the fact that PSV's, like LGV's, are fitted with tachographs. Many many years ago I had an experience similar to this whereby a coach didn't stop and, to cut the anecdote short, having been traced by the Police, the readings showed that the coach was speeding, which immediately made them "guilty" without argument or mitigation. I appreciate this was L.L. and probably speed does not come into play, but the tacho print-out might highlight other short-comings on the coach driver's part. The excuse used to be "I'm driving a large vehicle I didn't realise/ hear it" however, this tends not to be the case nowadays as the Police then go for "driving without due care" (used to be care and attention). Good luck with whatever course of action you take.

DaveR This is the second time I've been "busted" by you, and there's nowt wrong wiv that, John, know wot r mean. Genuine congrats.

On a very serious note, having indulged in a bit of sport on here and particularly having reeled in "fish" (see what I did there), this most definitely was not my motive or intention. I related my experience on here to point out as I stated the diametrically opposed points of view and experiences of different people, after this particular business received creditable criticism on here. Further, and perhaps the most bizarre aspect of my experience, I was referred to this particular shop by my sister who had received good service from the gentleman in there. To quote tallulah71 "most people's opinion you are wrong" it may interest you, tallulah71, that that was the initial response of my sister when I related my experience to her. My original posting regarding this issue remains an honest and truthful account of what transpired.

Reference your quoted post GOOD HEAVENS ABOVE. NO NO AND THRICE NO. I would never go there. I can ,however, be found frequenting a better class of establishment off of Pall Mall and St. James' Street, such as The Royal Oversees League or The RAC Club. See you there ? Nah I don't think so.

Hi Fish I must freely admit, I am a bit perplexed at your fit of pique. I would refer you back to my post timed at 2.46pm, whereby I congratulate you on your( and, indeed, yours alone) perceptive ability to read between the lines. However, it is incumbent upon me to point out to you that such is the constitution of the society in which we live that it is by necessity that some must preside, teach and rule, whilst others must humbly submit, learn and obey. Initially, I had you in the former grouping. Does this need amending? In any event, this thread has its origins in the level of service (or otherwise) experienced by people in the local shops. The opening line of my first post still rings true, in which I refer to the diametrically oppossed point of view emanating from individual's own experiences. Who is to say that one is correct and another is not, it remains their interpretation of their experience. An angry man is seldom reasonable and a reasonable man is seldom angry. Men with clenched fists cannot shake hands

Hi Fish You are quite right, that should have read - exaltation - a "slip of the pen" due to typing in haste. I must, however, point out that a sentence should never begin with the word "and". I refer you back to the last line of my previous post.
-
Miga - shouldn't your post read "in this case it's its not it's " Sue - thanks for proving my opening statement " diametrically oppossed" Fish - you come nearest but I thought I only put twelve in there with a thirteenth consisting of the over use of apostrophes!!!! This was an actual occurence and the lady in question most definitely needed putting in her place as she was attempting, by a self-proclaimed exaltion, to reach the higher echelons of social standing frequented by myself and others of equally superior abilities, and would most certainly have immediately been exposed as an imposter. Think: invidious; paradox; magnanimity; paraleipsis; Who's zooming who ? Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast - Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) The formula for complete pomposity is to be very busy with the unimportant - Edward Newton

DaveR - Great reply...I luv it... Ted Max - LOL... Nice...but not quite. Incident in question was a few months back at the height of the summer and wearing jeans and a t-shirt (Best reply ever to one of my posts, by the way)

Read this thread with great interest, it's amazing people's different experiences and how their points of view are sometimes so diametrically opposed. Like mine here and now. Afraid I have to take issue with "New Wave" and their comments about Chener Books (although on this occasion I had dealings with the rather older lady I will kindly refer to her as rather than the gentleman ). Upon making an enquiry, I was met with the most disdainful, contemptuous and haughty attitude and reply it has been my misfortune to experience in many a long year from any person in any realm or walk of life. Fortunately, and I know that this comment will probably lead to some howls of derision, I am an extremely articulate and erudite individual, and managed to quite deliberately "slap her down" with a choice of words that I suspect she had neither heard before nor knew the meaning of. I further suspect that her attitude arose from the manner of my attire and some preconceived notion of the type of person I must have been. Yes, and this honestly is not meant as a pun, we are talking about the possibility of judging a book by it's cover!!! I left, somewhat confused and perplexed as to why an independent business would, from the outset, treat potential customers in this particular manner. and, obviously, without having conducted any business with them and, needless to say, taking my custom elsewhere. It would be interesting to learn if anybody else out there has encountered this lady and her pompous behaviour and air of superiority that was, it has to be said, and inevitably probably still is, somewhat misplaced!!!!!!

Followed this thread with a bit of interest as I visited a couple of times in the summer and was only charged 50p entrance!!! However, went this last Sunday and it was indeed ?1. I queried it, and this is where I now appreciate what"fluffy" wrote previously. The bloke on the gate was a truly rude ignoramus, telling me I did not know what I was talking about it's always ?1. and further, as I only had a small amount of change, wouldn't change a ?20 note for me. ( Yes, I do accept it's a bad strategy to go to a boot sale without copious amounts of change). I left, but as I was walking away there was another guy directing traffic, so I asked him about 50p and ?1 to which he informed me it's 50p when you come later in the day. Now this is despite my arriving earlier in the summer than I did on Sunday. I said how I only had a small amount of change, at which he became quite abrupt and sneering, stating " so you couldn't buy anything then" When I pointed out that his colleague wouldn't change a note, he said " I'll give you the other 50p to get in if you like"!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO WHY ARE THEY CHARGING ?1 IN THE FIRST PLACE IF THEY WERE EFFECTIVELY PREPARED TO LET ME IN FOR 50p!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Avoid this boot sale at all costs. Organised by a couple of blue collar, working class "heroes", living the fantasy of Del Boy from Fools and Horses. Morons one and all.
