You could try the old Bonnington Hotel. It is now called something like The Yewtree at the Hilton (or very similar). It is on the opposite side of Southampton Row to the large building, Victoria House.(Southampton Row is what Kingsway becomes after it crosses High Holborn). Avoid at all costs Parkers Restaurant in Parker Street. ate there once and when going to the loo saw rats in the toilets.

In answer to your question, Jeremy, 43 years and counting listening to the same song since the Quo adopted their present format, and yes, I do love them. Sorry Mr. Ben don't agree about 12 bar based sound. Love the clip of Freddie, fantastic,he's often forgotten among the other two "Kings". Got an old VHS recording of him on The Old Grey Whistle Test (with whispering Bob Harris) what a guitar player!! On that subject of great players, what about Leslie West of Mountain fame. When he plays the blues many would argue it is the most beautiful tone ever produced from an electric guitar. A talent that was massively missed in this country, just like the beginning of the Woodstock Festival recordings missed Mountain's set.

Just seen this thread, I know it's deviating slightly from original subject, but was this, Huggers, what all the sirens were about at approx. 5.00pm on Saturday, around the time the brief storm came in. Heard loads of them flying about and Police still up and down L.L. half an hour or so later when at the co-op store.

Otta wrote "I feel fine was the first time feedback heard on a record". Do you agree that at the time it was probably the greatest opening riff that had been heard to a track ? As you point out, Otta, it was entirely innovative.

vixstar87 If you don't have a lot of spare time, why don't you try a one off car boot sale (I assume you prefer to raise some funds for yourself in the first instance) but avoid the idiots at D.H.F.C. site and then give what remains to charity as suggested by lane lover in orderfor them to raise some funds. The St. Christopher's Hospice shop, on L.L., is recommended.

Although not living in E.D. ( or London for that matter ) at the time ( about six years ago ) I was still working here and that work took me into the homes of council tenants. During the course of this work, I came into contact with several older people who had exercised their right to buy back in the 80's.When work was carried out they were liable for, what was described to them, an equal pro-rata share of the bill. One particular case was a widow in her 70's who had received a bill for 16k, yes that's right, 16k for the fitting of a new uPVC front door and a double-glazed window installed in the wall, yes the wall, of the walk way balcony, replacing the iron post gaps. No. I couldn't figure that one out either. As she had absolutely no means with which to pay, Southwark Council had very "kindly" told her they would not persue her for payment, but would instead put a charge on the flat repayable by her family upon her death. Genuine sympathies to you, Hoak, if this is the type of situation you now find yourself in, but it has been going on for many many years and Pugwash is absolutely correct. It is perhaps the great swindle of the Margaret Thatcher era and policies, the full effect of which is probably still yet to come.

My wife has just received an e-mail informing her it was "time to say goodbye to wrinkles forever". As she said, she can't (and neither can I) ever recall knowing anybody called wrinkles, and in any event, forever is such a long time!!

With all the doom and gloom and aggressive rhetorc contained in some of the threads on this forum thought I might inject a bit of Xmas cheer. So how about some jokes/one liners to brighten up these long winter nights from all you regular witty contributors out there. Considering the media we are all using, I'll start off............

Some of the non-sensical drivel written by Meg 1001 on this thread makes me think that (apparently) there might be more brains contained in one of the pork pies on sale in his/her yearned for Waitrose supermarket !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't wanna be all doom and gloom but looks like my guess/warning about c/c could be spot on as I note most of the vehicles affected are " 4x4 ", with their higher clearance from the chassis to the road surface making them easier targets for these thieving scum-bags. -
Stretch of CPR was between NX / Upland Rd -and- Whately / Underhill Rd and when walking from the former towards the latter the stretch before the medical centre. @DST...Was your incident the same part of the road?

Sorry Sugarmouse but there is never ever "one", they are always in mating pairs and dependant on whether you caught the female or not, you may have got rid, as the male will move on in search of another mate, but if you caught the male then the female may well stay in situ awaiting the arrival of another mate or even if it has offspring will wait until a male amongst them matures (about 6-8 weeks) and then mate with them. Keep all your stuff down for at least two weeks ( I note you stated last week ) and only then will you be sure.

Sorry to have to inform you all but this activity seems to be a precursor to Catalytic Converter thefts It has followed this "M.O." where I used to live outside of London and also where family reside in Bognor and friends to the west of London. Local Police should/are probably aware of what comes next so report it to them if you haven't already done so in order for them not to have to play "catch-up". -

What about the graffitti that read "Dyslexia rules K.O." -
Following on from similar threads on this forum (Friern Rd, Underhill Rd, Lock Stickers, etc) I have just learnt that there were a couple of attempted break-ins on CPR, albeit about a week and a half ago. Having only just returned to E.D. after many years away, I am still slightly behind the times and as I state have only just learnt of this, so apologies if this is already widely known but I felt it entirely prudent to pass on the info just in case the immediate residents are unaware.
