  1. You won't let it lie will you. When I was at school kids would ask you who was the champion of the world (this was after Ali lost to Frazier in the first fight), and if you dared to say Joe Frazier you'd get some righteous ras claat licks. This is what you got coming to you boy. Ali is the King of the world forever. Let that be a lesson to you.
  2. That's you again trying to have the last word is it LondonMix? FFS can we please move on?
  3. Actually, now I come to think of it I'd already left Tulse Hill School when this happened. I'd just started working at what was then IPC Newspapers and specifically I worked for the Sunday People and The Sporting Life at that time. I was lucky enough to go and see the Rumble in the Jungle live at the cinema at Marble Arch and Ali came to visit my old school after he'd won back the world title against Foreman and made a visit to Brixton. A lot of the kids that lived there went to my school. He was a massive hero to all of us. In the picture is my old school friend Tony Sibbleys sparring with Muhammad after he'd made a speech. He'd asked for the biggest, toughest kid to get up and spar with him. Tony was around 6ft 4ins and a lovely bloke. Sadly, I lost touch with him after I left. https://greatwen.com/2012/01/17/muhammed-ali-in-tulse-hill-1974/

  5. The Tulse Hill (Tavern) Hotel has made a much better fist of things with their makeover. You'd think in Dulwich Village they could go a bit more upmarket. https://www.tulsehillhotel.com/
  6. Crikey! I thought Vista went out with the Ark.
  7. Looks no better than a Travelodge. There goes the neighbourhood.
  8. I installed Windows 10 from 8.1 getting on for a year ago now with no problems whatsoever. *smug face*
  9. You're right on both counts Red Devil.

Ali was a great man. Someone I loved and had the greatest of respect for. One of my heroes. He transcended sport. One of my biggest regrets is that when he made a surprise visit to my school in Tulse Hill in 1974 I missed him because I'd bunked off. RIP champ.
  11. Sales aren't down though but the pubco obviously thinks they can gain mores sales than at present. The pool table is still there. It also serves the best pint of Guinness in Dulwich.
  12. I wouldn't know. All my grandparents were dead before I was born.
  13. Mac, first of all you spell his name wrong and then you get his quote wrong. It's 'float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.' I loved Muhammad Ali. He transcended boxing. A truly great human being. RIP champ.
  14. I remember some mad parties in the room upstairs back in the 70s.
  15. I'm much more looking forward to seeing how the Welsh get on. I think Bale could really light up the tournament. However, being English I'm going to be optimistic as we normally are when tournaments come around and say we'll make it as far as the semis. I've got a semi on just thinking about that. And another thing - James Milner has 60 caps. That's more than Jimmy Greaves, Glenn Hoddle, Alan Hudson and Gazza. He's a very good player but that can't be right can it?
  16. Fair enough DTR, I'm not a great lover of televisions in pubs but The Castle was THE pub to watch the football in the locale for me. PS: I like Penge too.
  17. The Irish. God love 'em.
  18. Ooh, I remember that one too. Lethal.
  19. Forget the Ramrod and Special. That was for wimps. The real mix to get you wobbly in a Youngs boozer was Special and Export.
  20. I heard about this last week and I've also heard they've sacked all other staff too. It's a bloody disgrace. Jenny is a part of the furniture and fittings of The Castle just like Mary was before her. I expect a refurb is imminent and the pub will be turned into another boring homogenised pub like the rest of them around East Dulwich.
  21. I'm still partial to a Boilermaker. A decent pint of ale with a whisky/whiskey chaser. And I used to love a Rusty Nail (Scotch and Drambuie), which reminds me I must have one soon.
  22. I think Martin runs the club, so you're probably right.
  23. I'm going tonight. I thought it was Martin's thing but there you go. It'll be a first for me tonight though I may get along to Hank Dog's Easycome later which is at Skehans, 1 Kitto Road, Nunhead. The Easycome is a longstanding weekly acoustic night every Wednesday which is great fun. Some members of the Fat White Family often sit it when they're not touring and the truly wonderful Flameproof Moth and Misty Miller are other regulars. Also at the Joiners Arms in Camberwell on Thursdays.
