  1. DF, didn't see yours before I posted but I think I must be odd because two hours after porridge I'm really hungry again, which doesn't seem to happen with protein. Wish porridge worked for me.
  2. Trying to motivate myself by thinking of nice food that's also going to help me lose weight. In the spirit of putting off getting into the shower for another ten minutes, here's what I'm going to make for lunch this week: Morroccan carrot and lentil soup 1 medium onion, diced 200g red lentils 3-4 carrots, diced Stick of celery, diced 1 litre veg stock (Kallo is lovely) 1 tsp each chilli powder (or a few drops of tabasco), ground ginger and dried coriander 1 bay leaf Ground black pepper Put it all in a saucepan, bring to the boil and simmer until the lentils are soft, c.20-25 mins. Remove bay leaf and blend. I'll have it plain the first day and for the rest of the week I'll add a spoonful of something or other to keep it interesting - peas, raw spinach, a bit of chicken or bacon, seeds, chopped apricots or prunes, pasta etc. Just going to listen to songs from Frozen for a few minutes on youtube and THEN I'll get in the shower.
  3. It's only really noticeable in the Lounge, and much, much less than in the past as people have moved on. Perhaps there's a parallel one in the Family section by now, who knows.
  4. For me the issue isn't how to lose weight - it's pretty obvious and I've done it enough times - but feeling motivated enough to actually do it. Any ideas?
  5. Posted too soon: two months is ambitious, though. How do you plan to do it?
  6. If you're starting a diet thread I'll join; need to focus myself on knocking off a stone or two but can't get up much enthusiasm on my own and b@ggered if I'm shelling out for Fat Fighters. I'll start by putting the packet of marshmallows back in the cupboard in fact.
  7. IKEA is an allegory of the descent into hell.
  8. numbers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > have no idea who moderates the forum (how do > people know this unless they are serial long-time > lurkers/posters?) A few of them have mentioned it from time to time.
  9. I wondered too. I've reported quite a few spam posts which are all by the same user name but it doesn't seem to have been blocked. Not sure how the language is getting through either. Something strange going on.
  10. My niece told me I was singing it wrong. She's four. Crushed.
  11. The endless trolling. Really very tedious.
  12. Much of the South Bank these days, sadly, especially Tate Modern. Covent Garden piazza. Canary Wharf, mainly the shopping centre. Heathrow terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4.
  13. You're in it, obviously.
  14. I also sometimes find that people who have been involved in moderating the forum can sometimes bring a bit of that into their personal posts (the phrase I'm avoiding here is 'sound judgmental'), but I'm sure it's not consciously done.

But you can usually guess. > > Hope that helps > > DulwichFox I wonder if it's almost the opposite - those who perceive themselves as 'outside' think there is a clique they're not part of, while those who don't feel like outsiders aren't aware that others may be having a different experience from them?
  16. Nice attempt at deflection Louisa, but to put it more clearly, my point was that what seems to be behind a lot of your critical comments is plain old class prejudice.
  17. I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth, but to me the subtext of the argument seems to be about perceptions of class. The development of the area just seems to be the context. That itself is interesting as for much of the 20th Century - like many of the suburbs - ED seems to have developed to give clerks and lower managers access to the City. From the comments I heard from the older generation when I moved here, that was in fact the real stigma - nothing being as irredeemably beyond the pale as the lower middle class back then.
  18. Just thinking aloud here, but what happens if you move here then have children - do they count as local if they've lived here all their lives and been to school here? Does that change if it's a fee-paying school? And then does that change if they got a scholarship or a bursary? What if they moved here to do a key worker job - a teacher or a doctor, say? Or how about if they moved here as the demographic of the area changed to set up a local business which has created some jobs? Interesting.

I think you may have inadvertently put your finger on it there, though - why do you feel you are at war with anyone who has come to live here since birth? It seems to echo the immigration debate but I don't get the impression that the incomers want to do anything except integrate and enjoy living here and contributing to the area. This isn't intended as a criticism (though your posts do make me laugh sometimes) - I'm genuinely interested.
  20. (Deleted as system somehow posted twice, sorry.)

  22. I was in a small town in Taiwan a few years ago and saw people casually pile up firecrackers in the street and then set light to them. It was just outside a busy cafe, with cars parked on both sides of the road, in the middle of the afternoon. No one turned a hair (except me, the only westerner present). In Amsterdam at New Year I've had firecrackers thrown at me while cycling as snow was falling, and narrowly avoided rockets that people were letting off in the street. While I'm not a fan of the noisy kind of firework and I'd be in favour of a noise limit, it's actually pretty under control here when you compare with other places.
  23. Surely you should get double points for two in a row, AM?
  24. You do sound a little scary, but I'm saying it in a respectful kind of way. I know I'd be useless in a fight situation but I admire women who can take care of themselves if they have to.
