  1. Well my twopennyworth is 74 TV + 24 radio channels . Indoor ariel . Had very poor reception with Philips TV ,hugely improved with cheapo Celcus from Sainsbury . ?leads the problem rather than TV . No idea .
  2. Mmm telling off after child does something you told them not to ....must try that one .
  3. If I had a pound for every life lesson I've tried ,and failed ,to teach my son ... Poor parenting on my part I suppose .
  4. I thought the posts about statistics and looking at them carefully were interesting and helpful . Though ,if I understood them correctly ,and I may well not ,strike cold fear into my heart in that a childs expected perforance seems so closely linked to their performance when they were even younger . What I do find bizarre is that there is a state school with a very complex ,far from clear admissions policy ,an exams admin system that has had to be investigated ,teachers who have told Ofsted of their concerns over the SMT ,an alleged high number of teachers leaving and that discussion of such matters brings down no clarification but threats of legal action regarding libel .
  5. Be nice to have an idea of rates .
  6. Aaah now I see it ,it's all to ensure good TV reception . "This problem exists with digital television too, but the interference by rain is far worse than it used to be with the old system. Even tall trees nearby with wet leafs rustling in the breeze can wipe out a digital picture." http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/2012/sep/30/weatherwatch-storms-digital-media-switchover
  7. I see that the mumsnet thread on Kingsdale referred to by prickle has been deleted " for legal reasons " .
  8. I have no doubt that the trees will sprout again . But I object to the works being done at this time of year ,many were pollarded in August . What is the point of a tree ,especially in an urban environment , is it to enhance the environment ? Physically and visually ? And aren't the leaves integral to that enhancement ? Now we have no leaves ,just poles and sticks . I guess the logical extension to this method of tree management will be to remove the trees and replace them with a few posters between March and July .
  9. Every child and parent is different - and I supose to a lesser extent teacher and school . But I wish I had delayed my summer born son's school start . He was always aware that he was behind the others ( perhaps he would have felt the same starting in year 1 ) and he continued to lack confidence ( academically ) into his secondary school years .
  10. I do wonder why the trees were pruned at this time - work started in August and ( fortunately as far as I'm concerned ) was delayed by nestgate. What you say about reducing root damage and water take up makes sense ....but I wonder if these were in fact a problem that warranted such severe action. And who and how these issuses were identified and asessed . If it was deemed necessary to carry out these works in Barry Rd ( and many younger ,smaller trees have ,for the first time ,had the same treatment as the large ones that have been pollarded in the past ) then presumably the majority of trees ( roadside/near buildings ) in the borough will be treated the same way .
  11. Is it a public meeting ,can anyone attend ?

  13. I guess they've had to make savings . But who knows - presumably it's a more tricky and therefore costly job to pollard trees in full leaf as opposed to after the leaves have dropped . And how we feel about such a drastic change to our environment doesn't come into it I suppose . I am really upset though ,very shocked by how it looks .
  14. Never been pruned at this time of year before . And Royal Horticultural Society's advice is that autumn is the worst time to prune/pllard trees because it leaves them prone to fungal infections .
  15. Mmmm ...but if people living in a certain area are aware that neighbours have been unsuccesful in applications in the past ( because the footpath route has not been allowed and the longer bus route has been used to determine distance )they might feel it's not worth applying . A map on the school website showing the route might counteract a local belief that there's no point in applying .
  16. A neighbour of mine had problems ( sorry ,but a lot of long running problems ) because her car's number plates had been cloned .
  17. You can check bus routes and stops on the TFL site . The C10 is shown as stopping at Victoria coach station . http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gettingaround/maps/buses/
  18. Well yes ,I've suggested that the timing might have been planned to reduce street sweeping costs .
  19. What do you mean by deserving ? I don't think The Charter school's admission policy is designed to rank applicants as to how deserving they are . Unless you mean deserving in terms of who fits their admissions policy most closely . And to ensure that happens a clear and fair policy is needed . Fair in the sense that if it states safe walking distance is a criteria that criteria should be applied in the same way to all safe walking routes ,not picking some and excluding others . Fair in the sense that where a judgement is called into question and referred through the proper channels the outcome is recognised by the school .
  20. Have you read the first judgement ? Any views on that ?
  21. And your views on the fact that after the first appeal regarding use of Wanless Rd was succesful ,the school carried on refusing to recognise the route and further appeals had to be brought ?
  22. Thank you for this Robin . For me I think the impact of the pollarding is greatly increased by it being done now and the sudden move from trees in full leaf to bare sticks . I have never known it be done at this time of year before . Will the RHS view that autumn is the worst time to carry out this work ( risk of fungal infections to the trees ) be considered when these protocols are discussed ?
