  1. Just be glad you don't live in Peckham where the side streets off Rye lane have dumped rubbish ,doorways used as urinals ,as the norm . I can't help wondering why what seems to be lower standards ( cracked ,uneven paving stones general dirt and neglect ) operate in Peckham .
  2. Yes - Quickprint on corner of Oglander and Maxted . Couldn't be nicer or more helpful ,truly lovely people 020 7639 6764 .
  3. Just like to add - I don't think Sue is thick at all . In fact I think she's very perceptive - hadn't even occured to me that there might be a difference between a public meeting and a drop in .
  4. I got a second letter with details of a drop in session to answer queries 23 Oct ,4 - 7pm Rye Oak Primary School .Whorlton Rd ,Se15 Project Office 07809 530674 ,ref nos CAP 5 /BB 966778 This is re works in Nunhead/East Dulwich .
  5. Sounds an excellent idea to me ,sometimes I wonder if its just me worrying/being outraged by something and it would be nice to talk to other people .
  6. "What a stressful way to live if you have a sick child - ready to do battle......so sad." Prepares you for when you're fighting for medical attention for an elderly parent though . Hope people don't think that's an irrelevant comment in the "family " section of the forum .
  7. Sorry ,I see what you mean . Northbound cylists share the bit of the road - marked with bikes painted on to the surface - with buses .
  8. medley and tich juicy - the shared space cycle way between Boots And Smiths IS a two way cycle lane ,north and south bound ? Isn't it ?
  9. And the people who carried out the " consultation " on the improvements of which this cycle way formed part didn't care either . Having learnt of the proposal in the local press I went to the Peckham Pulse library expecting details or advice - no they'd no knowledge of it . Eventually I got a phone number of the consultants carrying out the "consultation " - they had no idea of where the nearest library was to the proposed works but assured me that they had leafleted all local shops and residential properties . None of the shops I approached admitted to receiving anything and my mother who lives very close to this spot had received nothing . Wonder how much Southwark paid for that bit of window dressing ?
  10. Oh I don't know Curmudgeon there seems to be endless possibilty for discussion here - the number of staff leaving might be attributable to a combination of maternity leave ,short term contracts ,sick leave ,and staff reaching retirement age .Or not. the TES article and it's mention of a letter from Ofqual's chief regulator saying that the exams investigation has been delayed by legal discussions instigated by the school might be a fiction ( that Kingsdale have chosen to allow to stand ).Or not . Kingsdale have responded to all allegations . Or not . the exam boards are wholly responsible for any negative views that may remain of the integrity of the system at Kingsdale . Or not . And if that fails us we can split hairs - Kingsdale isn't expected to have a section 8 inspection soon ,it's to have an ofsted inspection triggered by a section 8 inspection .
  11. I realise that Carbonara and ,where simple maladministration or malicious complaints have been made would agree with the confidentiality surrounding the process . Were the alleged problems with exams to be symptomatic of a greater malaise then I would welcome whistleblowing . Having a child whose education was badly affected when his school was used as a political football ,I am also acutely aware of how the lives of children ,teachers and parents are affected by publicity ,press coverage and political interference . However my personal experience and my realisation that as Debster fears " across most schools , colleges & Uni's some form of manipulation of results is happening " has made me want greater openness and clarity ,not less . Kingsdale enjoys a fantastic reputation and is in a strong position , I don't believe that the fact of an exams investigation is known to the public will damage the school . As Debster has also said " Maybe this current exposure will eventually show what a fantastic school Kingsdale truly is ?"
  12. I don't think that Kingsdale is any more high profile than say Pimlico Academy ( frequently visited by all colours - Balls latterly and now Gove ) . And they too seem to be keeping their latest exam results close to their chest . Pimlico seems to have managed being "scapegoated "
  13. I think there are more issues at Kingsdale than the alleged problems with exams . And I think the judgement that the public whistleblowing was inappropriate is a subjective one .
  14. My understanding ( from expressing dislike when this was just a proposal )is that the cycle lane between Smiths and Boots in Rye Lane is based on the concept of " shared space " . A reason for the apparent paradox that reduced regulation leads to safer roads may be found by studying the risk compensation effect.[7] "Shared space is successful because the perception of risk may be a means or even a prerequisite for increasing objective safety. Because when a situation feels unsafe, people are more alert and there are fewer accidents."[citation needed] "We're losing our capacity for socially responsible behaviour, ...The greater the number of prescriptions, the more people's sense of personal responsibility dwindles."(Der Spiegel quotes Monderman)[8] "When you don't exactly know who has right of way, you tend to seek eye contact with other road users... You automatically reduce your speed, you have contact with other people and you take greater care."[9] "To understand how shared space works, it is important to move away from reliance on 'rights' and laws, and to recognize the potential for conventions and protocols ... Such conventions and protocols evolve rapidly and are very effective if the state does not intervene through regulation." (Shared Space Expert Team)[10] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_space I don't think it works in this setting and when cycling I simply avoid it - although perhaps that's an example of how the concept "works" .
  15. I thought that the outcome of enquiries of this kind - into alleged exam malpractice -always remained confidential . Presumably to protect those students who have sat the exams under the system being investigated . I thought the investigation was completed but this article from TES suggests otherwise http://www.tes.co.uk/article.aspx?storycode=6243818
  16. I understand that Kingsdale is to be featured on the 7pm news tonight on channel 4 ,so perhaps a few things will be cleared up then ?
  17. I can understand that Tomasi - they look quite architectural ,like weird sculptures . Maybe in a different setting I would like the shapes ....though it would be a stretch . My real preference would be for them to look like trees and to have kept their leaves for as long as possible .
  18. Oh e-dealer no offence meant ! Was just smiling at your misreading of my user name as in to sex at the moment . And the spell checker reference was because I'd misspelled aeriel ,and I thought the original post ( yours ? ) was so funny .
  19. Do you mean the missrepresentation of my username or the content of the post ?
  20. Well my twopennyworth is 74 TV + 24 radio channels . Indoor ariel . Had very poor reception with Philips TV ,hugely improved with cheapo Celcus from Sainsbury . ?leads the problem rather than TV . No idea .
  21. Mmm telling off after child does something you told them not to ....must try that one .
  22. If I had a pound for every life lesson I've tried ,and failed ,to teach my son ... Poor parenting on my part I suppose .
  23. I thought the posts about statistics and looking at them carefully were interesting and helpful . Though ,if I understood them correctly ,and I may well not ,strike cold fear into my heart in that a childs expected perforance seems so closely linked to their performance when they were even younger . What I do find bizarre is that there is a state school with a very complex ,far from clear admissions policy ,an exams admin system that has had to be investigated ,teachers who have told Ofsted of their concerns over the SMT ,an alleged high number of teachers leaving and that discussion of such matters brings down no clarification but threats of legal action regarding libel .
  24. Be nice to have an idea of rates .
