Pruning of Trees on Barry Road
intexasatthe moment replied to trentk69's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have no doubt that the trees will sprout again . But I object to the works being done at this time of year ,many were pollarded in August . What is the point of a tree ,especially in an urban environment , is it to enhance the environment ? Physically and visually ? And aren't the leaves integral to that enhancement ? Now we have no leaves ,just poles and sticks . I guess the logical extension to this method of tree management will be to remove the trees and replace them with a few posters between March and July . -
Missing reception year
intexasatthe moment replied to Claribel's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Every child and parent is different - and I supose to a lesser extent teacher and school . But I wish I had delayed my summer born son's school start . He was always aware that he was behind the others ( perhaps he would have felt the same starting in year 1 ) and he continued to lack confidence ( academically ) into his secondary school years . -

I do wonder why the trees were pruned at this time - work started in August and ( fortunately as far as I'm concerned ) was delayed by nestgate. What you say about reducing root damage and water take up makes sense ....but I wonder if these were in fact a problem that warranted such severe action. And who and how these issuses were identified and asessed . If it was deemed necessary to carry out these works in Barry Rd ( and many younger ,smaller trees have ,for the first time ,had the same treatment as the large ones that have been pollarded in the past ) then presumably the majority of trees ( roadside/near buildings ) in the borough will be treated the same way . -

I guess they've had to make savings . But who knows - presumably it's a more tricky and therefore costly job to pollard trees in full leaf as opposed to after the leaves have dropped . And how we feel about such a drastic change to our environment doesn't come into it I suppose . I am really upset though ,very shocked by how it looks . -

Never been pruned at this time of year before . And Royal Horticultural Society's advice is that autumn is the worst time to prune/pllard trees because it leaves them prone to fungal infections . -
Mmmm ...but if people living in a certain area are aware that neighbours have been unsuccesful in applications in the past ( because the footpath route has not been allowed and the longer bus route has been used to determine distance )they might feel it's not worth applying . A map on the school website showing the route might counteract a local belief that there's no point in applying .

A neighbour of mine had problems ( sorry ,but a lot of long running problems ) because her car's number plates had been cloned .

Well yes ,I've suggested that the timing might have been planned to reduce street sweeping costs . -
What do you mean by deserving ? I don't think The Charter school's admission policy is designed to rank applicants as to how deserving they are . Unless you mean deserving in terms of who fits their admissions policy most closely . And to ensure that happens a clear and fair policy is needed . Fair in the sense that if it states safe walking distance is a criteria that criteria should be applied in the same way to all safe walking routes ,not picking some and excluding others . Fair in the sense that where a judgement is called into question and referred through the proper channels the outcome is recognised by the school .

Thank you for this Robin . For me I think the impact of the pollarding is greatly increased by it being done now and the sudden move from trees in full leaf to bare sticks . I have never known it be done at this time of year before . Will the RHS view that autumn is the worst time to carry out this work ( risk of fungal infections to the trees ) be considered when these protocols are discussed ? -
I just want to acknowledge the huge amount of work that must have been put in by those campaigning to get The Charter School to produce and abide by a fair and clear admissions policy . I imagine that individuals have also incurred the displeasure of the head ... a brave thing to do when one considers how much power the head has . For years the school have had appeals based on the question of whether a footpath can be considered as a safe walking route or whether the distance from school be measured by a much longer bus route . The appeals have been succesfully upheld but the school has persisted in refusing to recognising the route . The adjudicators exsaperation is clear from the first judgement https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B9GB1PQuo9iAODYyYzZiMWEtYzEzYS00Y2U3LWE4M2MtNTJiMzhiNjc5YzZl. All Southwark's secondary schools are their own admissions authorities ,this case illustrates that parents can't just assume that they are fairly administered and applied and that sometimes further action is needed . ( further action doesn't come close to conveying the huge amount of time and effort that must have gone into this ) . And for the record ,professionals who are paid to advise on admissions are referring to this latest judgement as a landmark ruling which has the potential to affect every admission authority using safe walking distance as an admission criteria .

Robin Crookshank Hilton wrote ( on stranded birds thread ) " There are discussions going on about whether severe pollarding is the best way to address regular tree maintenance " and " in addition to planning, trees are another one of my passions and I work very closely with the tree department. As Peckham Rose has suggested, I definitely intend to ask them to attend a Dulwich Community Council meeting " Robin - any more info on the discussions ? Can anyone contribute to them ? Has there been any outcome ? Will this be discussed at a CC meeting ? -

The RHS says "The least favourable time for pollarding is the autumn, as decay fungi may enter the pruning cuts ". But of course if pollarding is done prior to the annual autumn leaf fall I guess Southwark reduces the work load for street sweepers and saves money . I can't find words to express how unhappy I am to loose so much of these trees and to have the street scene so radically altered . I live in an upper flat and like you Becs can see every detail in the living room opposite me . I'm off to search for that thread on rescuing a nest as I believe there was mention of discussion of Southwarks tree pollarding policy at a Community council meeting . -

Surely any pollarding would reduce the amount of water needed . I don't understand why so much has to be taken off . I know they'll come back but we'll have all winter to look at them like this . I guess we still have trees but only for some of the year . The pollarded ones have the characteristics of a pole ,not a tree .
