Rendle I take your point and my description was sloppy .My mother didn't walk along the cycle way or use it as an extension of the pavement but she did walk across it when crossing the road . She was always anxious that she wouldn't be able to see or hear a bike fast enough to give way to them .Possibly she should have walked back to the corner of Hanover and crossed at the lights at Primark . But no one else does . And unfortunately not all cyclists stick to the bike way but veer off on to the pavement to overtake/undertake . Edited to say that my mum was well aware of the bike way ( or whatever it's called ) as I discussed with her my concerns and my response reflecting them to the consultation that proceeded it's introduction .I also raised the matter on here but no one seemed concerned and JB was in favour as was the cycle group ( a formal association ,local ,can't remember name ) . All my family have cycled since toddlerhood, parents ,aunts and uncles riding tandems to Brighton and I used to love cycling . Sadly I don't think London's roads are very suitable for use by large numbers of cyclists .

That's a lovely cheery post Beulah . If my mum were still alive I'm sure she'd have appreciated your joy de vivre . Or possibly her poor sight and hearing and limited mobilty might have tempered her appreciation . Oh and the fact that she was terrified of being knocked over by someone on a scooter or bike .Especially on the shared pedestrian bike way in Rye Lane . What's wrong with walking to school ?

How to deal with neighbour's cigarette smoke?

Ah ,that's difficult then Ilona . I think the advised approach is to discuss issues with neighbours .But easier advised than undertaken . -
wrong thread .must focus!

I'd be thrilled if the display of a poster was the only thing that made the exterior of my dwelling look naff . Though having googled the expression naff I'm not sure if poster display fits into this category . Lots of definitions ,but I quite like this one * Naff is polari (or palare), the gay urban secret language developed in London to ensure conversational privacy in public when talking about gay sex or insulting straight people.Naff is an example of an acronym - Normal As Fuck - and means drab, unfashionable, dull. By extension, it is a defining characteristic of straight people, who lack the style and swagger of the urban homosexual."

How to deal with neighbour's cigarette smoke?
intexasatthe moment replied to IlonaM's topic in The Lounge
Another here sending sympathies .Interesting that the problem has altered - I wonder what is responsible for the change ( I'm presuming that before your neighbour went away the smell wasn't in your flat ) .Could the recent hot weather be a factor ? Open windows ? Is there asny way you could raise it with the neighbour ? I doubt I could ,it's hard to avoid causing offence . And Seabag "Much like tinnitus, you'll not cure it, but silicon sealing up the gaps will help" - that's also interesting ,I have tinnitus which I hate . But I fear filling my ear with silicone may be a step too far . -
I hate incidents like this ,but honestly sounds like you did all the right things . I think it's unlikely he could claim you did a hit and run if the damage is all to the rear of your car .

Oh, tricky . Sympathies .I think if the cat was completely drenched it was a bit excessive .

Isn't clay alkaline ? And I was guessing the "not banned here" = " should be banned here because it is elsewhere" ???? Who knows ,the first link I got when googling aluminium sulphate didn't look encouraging ,so use of that could probably also be debated .

I think I've read that wrapping as many of the plants as you can in large plastic bag ,spraying into bag and tyeing up neck of bag is effective . Personally I just keep grubbing them up . Oh yes to the million little bluebell bulbs being 30 thousand feet down .Embedded under a much loved plant that you really don't want to disturb .
-
Oh yes bluebells ....I'm growing to dislike them .Impossible to retain the delicate English ones and the brutish spanish ones just take over ,growing through the plants you want to retain .
-
Well I can offer lots of sympathy .It is very invasive . I think it's a question of digging as much of the roots out as possible and then being vigilant and pulling out plants as they sprout . And do your best to get them out before they flower as that adds seeds to the dastardly work of the roots . It's a question of keeping at it . I don't think ( but might be wrong ) that changing the soil's PH will help . Onwards - you'll get there !

Yes ,work with nature - your own as well as the planets .A perfect lawn is v hard work ,some lovely green grass with moss and daisies is more doable . I've had no luck improving drainage for my grass but have found the shady grass seed good . I've also mainly failed at reseeding - squirrels dig it up,it's hard to protect ,and can't be cut for ages .So I'm going to try producing a supply of my own little patches by growing grass in gravel trays .

Does this really damage the pavement and services underneath ? Do Southwark ever take any action ? -

Planning appeals - anayone had any success?
intexasatthe moment replied to pr5ined's topic in The Lounge
No personal experience of winning an appeal though a neighbour succesfully appealed and succeeded in getting planning permission which had previously been refused . He used Julie Greer at http://www.greerpritchard.com/services.asp for the appeal . Have you looked at appeal cases on Southwark's planning map ? Maybe that would give you some pointers ? http://maps.southwark.gov.uk/connect/southwark.jsp?tooltip=yes
