ianr replied to MunDanity's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The Battersea Park train also stops at Peckham Rye, usually at 20/50 mins, which makes it convenient to connect with via the 14/44 from ED. -

> "Spelling" is the gerund of a verb. You can, if you wish, use it as a verbal noun, such as in > "her spelling is poor"; that is what gerunds are for. But to claim a gerund as a countable noun, > and then to pluralize it, is a manifest error that would once have warranted corporal punishment. Cf entry 2b below. From the OED Second edition, 1989; online version March 2012: spelling, n.2 1. a. I'd be glad of feedback of experience of any of the different modes of managing a shared freehold -- eg, via a company, dormant or otherwise, or through a trust deed. Mine would be as owner/occupier of one of two leasehold flats in a converted house. Anything about specific problem areas would be of particular interest.

A police helicopter hovers low over ED and no thread?!
ianr replied to EDmummy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There was a radio programme, based on a night on the helicopter, on R4 this morning. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01cwvp1 -
> You can always close your eyes and pretend its a radio. Not such a bad idea actually. Quite a large part of my TV consumption is listening to it via a Freeview box whicle doing something else. It's not nearly as information-dense in the speech department as radio is. Dodo1, my first quick cheap guess would be that you need to change a menu setting, to switch from DVD to digital TV input. I won't indulge in any more, as there's no real substitute for a precise account of all signs and symptoms and the beast's reactions to your actions.

> As far as that petition: Closes on 8 August 2012. And then... how long till action is taken? From http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/how-it-works#commons "If your e-petition reaches more than 100,000 signatures, it will be sent to the House of Commons. The Office of the Leader of the House of Commons will check it against: the terms and conditions for e-petitions the rules of the House of Commons Successful e-petitions will be communicated to the Backbench Business Committee. It will decide if your issue will be debated in the House of Commons." The existence of an e-petition doesn't of course preclude or substitute for any other action, such as making written representations. -

I'd have thought the Dynamode you describe would have been the right one, sizewise and interface (IDE rather than SATA). What was the problem? Does he want to do a one-off transfer, or have it available permanently? I've the means of doing the former; might even have a spare old 3.5" caddy too, though I can't remember their state.

Odd 'solvent' smell coming from kitchen??
ianr replied to MrsMc's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It really would be helpful to work out whether it's an airborne thing. Could the instances have resulted from air coming in from outside? What directions do the affected rooms face? -
Odd 'solvent' smell coming from kitchen??
ianr replied to MrsMc's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
There was a strange smell thread a few months ago. I thought the only 'explanation' given was probably some kind of joke. But the reports of a widespread stench were real enough, so worth mentioning: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,695706,695850#msg-695850 -

Is it coming up through the water waste pipe? In my previous place, I was once affected in my ground floor flat by a solvent that had been poured down the wastepipe in the upstairs flat, though I don't know what to make of the spread of the reports here. If it does seem a possibility, has anyone asked Thames Water's opinion, with a list of properties affected? -

If the 2 December newspaper report cited on page 5 by ibilly 99 is accurate, that's more likely what would have happened had it not been for the publishing of the video.

HELP PLEASE - Door stuck on washing machine full of washing

> You could also try putting the make and model name into the search - other people may have had the same problem with this model. D'oh! I did, but I stupidly put them in angle brackets so that they were ignored, and didn't preview. Thanks Sue. I fear that, short of mantras, jemmies and pickaxes, we're running out of sensible suggestions. -

> ETA: And the power had to be on in order for the child lock to click off, if that makes sense. I don't know, but have assumed that, having finished a cycle, it would also default to off eventually if unpowered.. Gina, a web search on washing machine door won't unlock might be worth trying. -
Simply compare the tariffs and their changeability. For checking electricity usage, I've found a single ?8 plug-in socket meter, that measures consumption of one device at a time, plus the ability to read a main meter, record readings, and do a little mental arithmetic, provide all the information I need. For checking gas usage, ditto minus the socket meter. Not even a smart meter is going to tell you how much fuel you use for individual devices or functions, is it?
