  1. Given that last week some old bloke sitting at the edge of the pavement minding his own business merited all-sirens police car screeching to a halt opposite Dulwich Library... I reckon this lot must have been expecting to find at least a gramme of coke :)
  2. The shape of things to come?.... Op-Ed Columnist America Goes Dark By PAUL KRUGMAN Published: August 8, 2010 http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/09/opinion/09krugman.html The lights are going out all over America ? literally. Colorado Springs has made headlines with its desperate attempt to save money by turning off a third of its streetlights, but similar things are either happening or being contemplated across the nation, from Philadelphia to Fresno. Meanwhile, a country that once amazed the world with its visionary investments in transportation, from the Erie Canal to the Interstate Highway System, is now in the process of unpaving itself: in a number of states, local governments are breaking up roads they can no longer afford to maintain, and returning them to gravel...
  3. Then there are the London City ones taking off... which sometimes I think I could reach out and touch ::o

His followers really believed he was a great guy. Unfortunately he was deluded and paranoid and killed many of them...
  5. 4,5000 feet or so.

You'll be better off leaving the snow there, igloo-style. My wood-burner gets installed tomorrow. Roll on winter B)
  8. Play dem bones!
  9. It would take me about 3 months to fill my enormous green (non-recycling) bin (if the rubbish wasn't collected). But the blue box is always full to overflowing, and likewise the blue bags (I have 2). I'd welcome the opportunity to send more stuff to recycling i.e. food waste.
  10. I was going to ask the same DJKQ :-$ Or perhaps we could start our own elderly band. The Rusties? Old Enough To Know Better? The Arthritics? The Faded Glories?

I bought a kitchen from John Lewis, and they use a third party courier for that - but a brilliant third party courier that provides the same excellent JL service.
  12. Anything will sell if the price is right.
  13. This means they can operate lorries with just a driver. The lorry will have a lift and a pallet trolley, both operated by the driver. But the trolley only 'delivers' (moves) as far as the kerb. Money-saving measure. Which as you say, creates something of a problem when the driver has a 105kg package, no driver's mate, and he didn't even know what he was carrying (i.e. that it was heavy).
  14. It's awright Pickle: we get bitten so that you don't have to :)
  15. I have an idea for alternative BBQ site. PM me.

I don't rely on Grove Vale library myself, but am concerned for the future of libraries, and have as you will have noticed a particular interest in St Aidan's projects in the area. Perhaps Southwark can impose a 'neighbourhood dislocation charge' on British Gas and others making our life a misery (see the Lordship Lane transport thread) to help pay for maintenance of such services. In these trying times we do need to be inventive! :-) (And on this issue, does not B Gas have to give an 'end date' for roadworks as well as a start date? There doesn't seem to be one.)
  17. Haven't seen that type, but I was bitten - while gardening - by another type of spider a couple of summers ago here in ED. The wound got so bad I had to go to hospital. They told me they were experiencing a massive upswing in casualties with bites. The bite went from tiny punctures, to dark blister the size of ping pong ball with halo-pattern inflammation throughout lower leg, to deep hole in leg. It took about 8-10 weeks to clear up.
  18. He he ruffers... There is these days good shopping at the market at Spitalfields, which is only 5 mins walk from the Whitechapel. Hundreds of independent stallholders. However, I'm not sure what happens there on a BH Monday (the usual busy shopping days there are Th, F, Sat, Sun). Also quite a few trendy independent (and often not expensive) shops in the surrounding streets. And my fave restaurant is just across the road from the market.

  20. Please no. There are so many things that are actually worth going to. But not Westfield. We are giving more and more of our hard-earned money to the big chains, which are pretty much the only businesses able to afford those rents. Why not go to a great gallery, such as the Whitechapel? (Aldgate: the 40 bus takes you right there) That Alice Neel painting of the twins is just fabulous. And then eat somewhere small and independent too.
  21. b-fly, there are no 'squirrel farms'. There are an estimated five million squirrels running around the country. The squirrels are shot. For a squirrel in motion, a shotgun is the best tool.

That's good. What a bunch of twits, though.

A lack of imagination but also a violation of copyright law (Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 etc.) Their good deeds just go on mounting up.

I'd say FH to East Croydon, as already stated, or, if it's convenient for you, catch the 197 to East Croydon. It stops opposite East Croydon station and should be quite quick in the evening. Savs you going to FH.
