  1. saw billy childish out for a drink the other night - now that's a beard though why someone his age would want to look like a smelly geography master i know not
  2. had to read that a couple of times there libra, and think you mean 'voila!' - there it is! wallah is the hindi word for 'man who does' ie char-wallah, dhobi-wallah, gin-wallah. but i'll take correction on this from any hindi-speaking-wallah.
  3. As a general rule, I have always refused to eat anywhere that has a photograph of the food on display; if theres a photo in the window, there's a photo in the kitchen so the bumbling fool can make the freeze/fry look right. recently a friend said to me he won't eat anywhere that has a ubiquitous nut warning on every menu page; contract jumbo-suppliers 3663 insist that restaurants taking their stuff run the warning as they can make no promises to the contrary. Whatever happened to publicans wives rattling up a daily pot of stovies/scouse/hotpot, and a block of cheddar for the veggies?
  4. a great shame indeed - i haven't been in ED all that long, and finding myself wanting a bacon sarny last week, was advised to go to the tulip. i've had one every day since. nero's panini's just dont cut it...
  5. For me - Noggin the Nog. But basically anything by Postgate and Firmin. uc
  6. I have started chucking out my vinyl - no requests please I have good homes arranged, and the rare 4AD is staying - and decided to become a psychotherapist. Keef - did the same thing a couple of weekends back; decided to kick the sauce for a while. Well done pgc - round to yours for a dansak soon then? Hows the new arrival? UC
  7. I used to live inside the Bonnybridge Triangle. Some nights you could'nt sleep for all the UFO's flying around.
  8. I think I've seen posting elsewhere that suggests this shop has a VERY rapid turnover with good quality stuff barely staying on the shelves for a few seconds! Ker-ching!
  9. macroban - yes there did seem to be some clipboard cross checking going on.
  10. DVLA are out and about in the steets off LL checking road tax discs, clamping vehicles that are out of date.
  11. I stand corrected - as usual - beagle. you work in the commercial property business? i'm a retailer, so my experience, as you will have noted , is broad but informal.
  12. Makes sense to me Oldie; but try finding an enlightened landlord on the high street.
  13. I have it on good authrity that, even for a politician, Clare Short is incredibly vain about her good looks.
  14. Legalbeagle - can't comment on the specifics of G&B's lease but it's quite likely to be expensive, long term with upwards only reviews, and FRI [Full Repairing and Insuring]. These clauses mean that the tenant takes on the liability for insuring and repairing the premises, from the roof to the drains. So when something happens like a collapsed drain then the tenants choices are to fix it, or pay the landlord to fix it. And try getting a shop lease without the dreaded FRI? can't be done I suspect. so criticising or pressurising the landlord will just annoy him. This is the modern world...
  15. Mike, Camberwell Police station is due to close soon too I think, in fact it may already have ceased to function. And while it may have a meritoriuos facade, I'm not sure that it is adaptable to any new use, probably having small and heavilly built rooms throughout, and no disabled access. ED's option to tear down the station and re-use the site for something useful is an opportunity to be taken.
  16. You're right BJL, independent record stores are one of those businesses which lots of people think would be successful, but which just can't make it in the retail rental market today. indy bookstores look to the decline of record shops in the age of digital downloads and crepe themselves, i tell you. the damage has been fatally done.
  17. Brendan I think I'm right in saying the banks can freeze pending claims as some of the earlier refusals have ended up in court, so everyone is waiting for a precedential judgement. So you can still lodge a claim, but the banks can reasonably put it in pending until those initial cases are settled. again I'd say subscribe to Martin Lewis's MSE to keep up to date. Has anyone had success with similar reclaims on small business current accounts? uc
  18. yep i'd say hold fire and keep reading martin lewis's MSE newsletter. i used his stock letters last year and got about 75% of my total charges over six years as a settlement. the man's a champion.
  19. A smaller, cheaper branch of Andy's of Denmark Street would have done me fine.
  20. ...is to be an Oliver Bonas gift shop. nice! http://www.oliverbonas.com/ ultraconsultancy
  21. Currently listening to Mozart Violin Concerto 5; bang on the money about edwyn Collins, sean. I was in touch with him briefly last year, and with the love and support around him he continues to make a slow recovery from his ills. I spent most of 07 listening to the same old, and whenever i hear current stuff i'm non-plussed. The most performed piece of music in the world is now the tune you hear when you switch on your computer [assuming it has windows]; written by Brian Eno IIRC. sadness all round, i feel. UC
  22. Not only that, woodie, but they also make smells that induce unmediated euphoria, calm, and paranoia.
  23. The guys who were stripping it out in December told me it's to be a dental surgery, and they seemed to think it was going to be part of the same surgery that will open at 2 Lordship Lane [which I think has been granted planning recently]so it would run all the way round the back of numbers 4 and 6 LL. Clearly thats going to be the most orally well-catered street; the first house on the right as you walk along zenoria street is also currently a dentist's outfit! Ultraconsultancy
  24. jah, mockney, am i to understand that gandb sell wine at shop prices for consumption on the premises? is that what that means? crikey, i feel some substantial wine drinking afoot!
