  1. A couple of years ago we had to assert my baby son's canadian citizenship, which involved the production of an officially acceptable candian government head shot. Not only is the size and aspect of the face statutorily defined, so is the size of the picture and the size of the white border; i think if you have an hour or two to waste you can download the regulations from the government of canada. So shut up with the complaining at the back, just be glad your not canadian and one year old, eh? Ultra-canadian-consultancy
  2. I've been doing a bit of work for someone who does art supplies and stationery, more on a 'family' than 'business' or 'professional' service model. Anyone think it might be a runner? Ultraconsultancy
  3. Bob - I grew up in a military family, and went to a military boarding school; I sat down to eat every day with boys whose fathers had been killed on active duty; I was taught many of the truths in life by men who had fought in the second world war; I did a lot of voluntary work at Erskine Hospital, where there were still some old boys who had been in the trenches in the first. If my sense of unconditional respect for such men doesn't help, I'll live with that. God knows it's helped me for my entire life.
  4. This thread is so odd I'm beginning to think the man in question either has multiple personality disorder , or it's twins with radically different characters! UC
  5. If I weren't going to either the Guards Memorial or the London Scottish I'd be there. Britain's treatment of it's retired soldiers, and widows too, denigrates us all. The freedom you have to shrug and walk away was hard fought, and hard won, with the lives of such men and women. And i'm afraid to tell you that a soldier who loses a leg to a land-mine has not been "paid for the job". Far from it. Ultraconsultancy
  6. they are a bit further south on the east side of the road IIRC UC
  7. So. Peckham Rose. You've been to Camberwell, then...
  8. Have you seen the famous photo of Faustian guitar hero Jimmy Page in his mystical embroidered silk suit having a large JD fresh from the bottle? Thats the only way to do it. Mixers are for the under-5's...
  9. Hi Anna Are you thinking of Arboria, the tree planet where Timothy Dalton held court? Now that IS a good movie! UC
  10. crikey maybe that means it's a fantastic name for a business...
  11. Piers I think you've pasted the wrong link in? Thanks for the info chaps. UC
  12. Downsouth - have you thought about getting an allotment? My parents [both growing up in the 40's in Scotland] always scrounged a bit of derelict land wherever we were in the world and grew most of our own food. It's shocking just how small a patch of land will support a family. My mum's dad was a great veg gardener [like a lot of lanark miners] and consequently i grew up eating food either straight out the ground or off the tree. You can't beat it; and I haven't even mentioned how good it is for the soul to take someone a bag of your own red onions instead of a bottle of red wine.. Atila I pretty much do what you suggest; it is great, the customers are always interesting, the money isn't fantastic, but you're doing well by doing good. Then the landlord, tfl, the banks, and the local authority come along and take it all away, and destroy your soul. Simply because they can... Ultraconsultancy
  13. Oh yeah Ondine - "i knew these two people once..." ; the second most famous cough in cinematic history.
  14. I'm thinking of naming a business after Zenoria Steet, where it will be based. I think the word itself sounds kid of funky; and it also means we might get fewer marketing calls. But I'm concerned that Zenoria might be some ancient now-discredited fascist leader responsible for the death of thousands [these things happen you know], and would thus present the wrong image. So, apart from a town in Louisiana, USA, does anyone know after whom or what is this ED Street named? Ultraconsultancy
  15. This is the same shop as is being discussed in the Sugar thread nearby. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,60068 Ultraconsultancy This thread is now locked as the shop is discussed on the other thread - The Administrator
  16. Ladygooner/ suzette quite right, books do get released in paperback into airports [but only for airside sale] much earlier than high street, although usually in the larger [trade] format. it is for precisely the reasons of portability you mention, and it is a big source of annoyance and argumnet in the publishing trade. the portability problem is a big sales issue, most publishers think that with a big author you should be able to charge 15 plus for that initial wave. readers want to feel they are getting some 'added value' for their spend, so you sell them the hard back. but it's not true; if i were in publishing i'd either sell the PB for 15 for a year, then 5 afterwards; or else i'd put out the HB and PB at the same time. we're only talking lit fic here of course. I'm a remainder dealer by trade and there is a big temptation every year to buy the HB remainders of the booker winner; this very rarely works as most people want the convenience of the PB. There are still piles of HB remainders of the line of beauty out there; there are virtually none of life of pi, which came out in PB original. go figure. Ultraconsultancy
  17. Hi Chav - Famously, Tony Kaye took his name off the credits because the studio made him change the last shot. if you have seen the last shot as he made it you'd know why. it's a good deal more shocking than the crucifiction shot in the middle.
  18. I was having this argument with some mates [in a pub would you believe] a couple of years ago. I'm personally very offended by 'medical' swearwords like spastic, can't say why I just am. Our gay chum argued that 'fag' is by far the worst term for gay as it doesn't describe what they do [like shirtlifter] but refers back to the historical habit of burning them at the stake. Of course the women objected to c;;t. But a very eloquent chap thought long and simply said "kaffir". So offensive that even the minorities to whom it refers have not tried to reclaimit, like they have with n;gg;r, p;aki, and queer. UC
  19. oops - really sorry pablo, i momentarily forgot that the thread was just about suggestions and went off into exegetical meandering. could the thread title say "contains spoilers". still, at least i didn't tell you all that kevin spacey is keyser soze... or is he? UC
  20. Some councils have a blanket policy [unstated in some cases] not to allow any retail to go to any other use. But in a case like this [i mean no 2 LL] the retail site has been unused, and the owners offer is to bring it back into use so long as he gets the changes he wants. As I've said elsewhere and often, it's a dark art. IIRC no 6 has two slightly contradictory change of use applications in at the moment, both from its existing class D. I think these apps have been made by the owners, Parkhill, so that they can put the property on the market to let and attract that largest number of potential users for a broad spectrum of uses, with consents already in place. Which if one is a commercial freehold investor, is the right thing to do. Again if anyone knows better please feel free to say so. Ultraconsutancy
  21. Two hearts beat as one... Best wishes to you both. UC [and also Mrs UC]
  22. Mr James Brown shouting "Brothers I think I'm ready to get up and do my thing. Moving, you know, doing it, man. Can I count it off?" Unequaled Ultraconsultancy
  23. Gail - Go back and watch ET again. Like all Spielbergs, the script is awful with moments of brilliance, like Elliot kissing the girl while ET watches John Wayne on TV. And cycling past the moon. But like you, I cry at that last line - "Be Good". It has to be about last lines doesn't it; Saving Private Ryan's narrative body [ie the part after they get off the beach] is just terrible, until that last line where Ryan asks his daughter if he's had a good life - boo hoo! My favourite all time ending is Fargo - We're doing ok aren't we? Yeah, I think we're doing ok. - Terrific. Ultraconsultancy
