  1. pretty sure you're right there MP - the A1/A3 dispute is about the hot panini, IIRC
  2. Two euphemisms I really like but don't get nearly enough opportunity to use are "paul and marshall" = boring, ie I went to see the Blue aeroplanes last week but they've all gone a bit Paul and Marshall. "foot on the monitor" = with great verve or enthusiasm.
  3. saying "gate" at the end of another word or expression [foot and mouth disease gate] to imply in a weak-minded way that there is a government cover-up of some kind of misdemeanour.
  4. Thought for the day is the most infuriating thing on R4. I recently heard a correspondent suggest that the reason terminally ill patients should be denied euthanasia is so that their suffering can inspire the rest of us. It's just about the most offensive thing I have ever heard anyone say. Love Lionel tho - I don't think his jewish mama jokes are bad at all - and also John Sentanu, the Bish of York when he does it.
  5. Eh? - since when did R4 become some kind of guilty pleasure? I love it, but feel it has been dumbing down a bit over the past couple of years, economists explaining terms such as 'like-for-like growth' kind of thing. All this and Melvyn Bragg, too!
  6. It's the TFL part that would worry me. I use an oyster card to get the discounts, but I wouldn't register my personal details on it in a million years. Letting TFL have access to your banking details is something you will regret for the rest of your life, believe me.
  7. I saw The Corries with my Mum when I was eight or so. First real gig was Hawkwind, Choose your Masques tour, Aberdeen, October 1981! Never looked back since...
  8. Anybody know if the John Major legend is true, or was it made up by Steve Bell? I met Steve Bell once; rarely have I been more frightened of... just implied menace.
  9. What infuriates me are the ridiculous compound verbs that are in vogue just now; to self-harm to project-manage to better-communicate and the like. We're not german you know! Also those completely made-up plurals like foods, behaviours, and weathers. A chap has to get annoyed about something, you know... UC
  10. Hi Keen to join in this worthwhile venture; please do keep me informed. I think I can be chattier company when I'm away from work, and not completely knackered. And passing time over a curry seems a very civilised way to do so. Ultraconsultancy.
  11. The unfinished feel is of course due to it not being finished; the last minute planning worries last week caused a bit of a hold-up, and it was thought it was better to stick to the opening date rather than let it drift another week. But the smell of fresh paint and wood glue will fade; replaced by stilton, oysters, and second hand vinyl i hear. You're right about the sounds too Sean, so i put up my old technics cabs with some freecycled rotel hardware today, and enjoyed some elgar and mozart [ED Warehouse will soon have the most aurally cultured chippies around]; chet baker, hoagy carmichael, and charles trenet coming once i get deeper into the boxes. Pretty quiet today - is monday closing an ED thing? - but I kept to my target of talking to everyone who came in, and selling books to most of them. Once the remaining stalls are up and running the j is gonna be jumping [especially if mootown keep up their free port marketing technique] Sorry I missed the footy on saturday - I was just *SO* tired! 12. It's open today folks! Come on in! Discounts, samples, and an eclectic mix of new businesses! BTW birdseye I think that's a Sentarian [he says in geek style] Ultraconsultancy
  13. LOL luddite; if you had seen the state of the place on entry and the work that's gone in by the ED Warehouse team! I don't think anyone's going to turn into a millionaire overnight;small businesses working hard to earn a crust is more the model! UC
  14. Maybe they did karter... or maybe you've heard otherwise? Apologies for not making my usual caveat about being open to contradiction. Chin Chin Ultraconsultancy
  15. Some well chosen words there, Dave. The structural and fitting work must, understandably, have been a grind for the Zenorians. But I'm sure that once it's up and running everyone will get along famously, and that little corner of ED will grow to love its cheese shop and its book dealer! Now can we get back to the business of being rude about Foxtons? Ultraconsultancy
  16. At the risk of looking gullible... If I go in there and ask for a veggy scotch egg and a glass of pinot grigio, what will I get? A nice lunchington snack... or will someone quietly say "yerr not from rown' err, arr ya"
  17. Can I help by clarifying a couple of things? Firstly I dont think it's been shown that ED Warehouse is opening without the correct permissions in place; it may well be that while it has been empty or in use as storage it has all the time been coded A1 for retail use. Secondly planning permission does not exist simply to protect residents from retailers; its function is to ensure that developments fit in with local, regional, and national strategy. It's not a boo/hurray system. Thirdly, the Warehouse will either be a worthwhile addition and enjoy customer support; or it won't, and it won't. Hope that helps Ultraconsultancy [sorry dusty i hadn't seen yours while i was posting - you are quite right of course
  18. I have to tell you I popped into 'the allegedly notorious' Ralon stationers today with a pretty ordinary request and the lady behind the till was charm personified; said hello, i asked for directions, she showed me some options, i paid my money, made small talk and left. perfectly nice transaction really! 19. Polly D - what on earth is in a veggy scotch egg? The suggestion is so irrational that I think it must be a joke!
  20. hey ratty the weekend is still three days away! loads of time! i'm sure eddie will keep you all posted here...
  21. Breton - ED Warehouse is at 1 Zenoria street; essentially its tucked in behind Caffe Nero in Lordship Lane. Look forward to seeing you there.
  22. Hey Ben Didn't go see BSP at White Mischeif last weekend did you?
  23. A cheese shop. Oh dear. I'll have to buy some more bigger trousers, then...
  24. Very true, Charlie. I'm generally in the 'no to chains' camp, and would usually prefer retail to food/cafe; but frankly, before EDW took it on, it was a big empty space waiting to be squatted or arsoned. As EDKiwi says, uless the residents want to land-bank it themselves, keeping it empty isn't going to be an option. The great british public vote with their feet in the long run anyway...
  25. i've always had a lot of time for Lydon, myself. i especially remember a pretty lurid but in depth documentary a few years back; everyone says how nasty sid was, but lydon says he was a pitiful man, and seems genuinely sad. he's still plying his trade, but don't we all? UC
