4.69 Bit disappointing. Thought I was grumpier than this. Must have been dragged up by that time I faked interest in the conversation.

There's an app for that. I use one called Image Size, there are lots of others.

Road rage has driven me to write spoof news.....
peckham_ryu replied to TheCat's topic in The Lounge
MY SPEED HUMP TERROR Dulwich dad Mo Yewdown has spoken of his crippling fear of speed humps. "I don't normally worry about speed," the Porsche Cayenne driver said. "But something about the speed humps on College Road brings me out in a rash. I can't help suddenly braking three yards from the humps, I'm that worried about the suspension om my poor little car." Local GP's are reporting the condition is increasingly common in the area, but they are reassuring patients that there should be nothing stopping them from accelerating to full speed in between sleeping policemen. Mr Yewdown confirmed he has been formally diagnosed with a phobia of speed humps, and says he is "slowly getting over it". -
Settle an argument - was there a Costa in Peckham before?!

There is something particularly soulless about Costa's livery and styling, that seems to be brought out more in that location. Actually now you mention those other places, maybe the Greggs to BK section of the high street is where a smaller Costa would look less out of place. -

Some dogs may become distressed, but not all. And the ones that do are equally likely to be distressed if you leave them home alone. Whereas bringing the hound with you to the shops is healthy for both owner and Fido. Sorry DF but you're over-generalising, and many dogs will contentedly wait for their owner when told to do so. > A child might try and stroke the distressed dog and get bitten. > This practise needs to be made illegal and the owner fined. Dogs biting people IS illegal. The owner can be fined, among other consequences. If the dog might bite, the owner is responsible for keeping it under control and if necessary muzzling it. It's equally perfectly fine for the owner of a sedate, tame Labrador or somesuch to judge that the dog will behave itself if left leashed outside the shops. No need to go all Big Brother and make up unnecessary rules to deal with the 1% of idiots who are liable to let their packs of attack dogs roam rampant.

Costa just doesn't fit well there on Rye Lane, does it? Is there any chance everyone will give it a miss, and the space will become available for another use? Mind you, I think the same thing about 80% of the mobile phone unlocking shops and bargain tat shops too. Specifically, it would be great if the council could somehow plan for the crummier superfluous shops to make way for relocating businesses whose premises are on the demolition list near the station. Costa will doubtless thrive though. The nearby indy coffee competition doesn't seem very strong. Small White Elephant does nice things, but the tepid coffee I had the other day is not one of them :-/ If I could pick one coffee shop type chain that would fit the area, it would be Boston Tea Party. If anyone's looking for a franchise to run round here, that's the one I'd spend money in. -
What the heck do people do in Aeroplane toilets?...

Longer haul flights = getting changed and ablutions. No excuse on short hops though. -
I think sometimes the point of sale system can't tell what the use-by date is, meaning someone has to check the food is still in date before it lets the sale go through. That's just my theory based on when it's happened to me.

If they're saying that your friend has lost his no claims discount because of the 3rd party claim, it's worth insisting that the claim was withdrawn and therefore there have been no claims. Not totally clear whether that's what's happening, but worth a go. I got the third degree from my insurer this year when I was comparing quotes. One of the (many) things they quizzed me about was a claim they thought might relate to me. In the end, we established it was someone else anyway, but the person on the phone said "The claim was withdrawn in the end so it wouldn't have counted". (Yeah I know - so why ask in the first place? Same applied to most of their questions!)

Having a really hard time with estate agents
peckham_ryu replied to PINKSHARK78's topic in The Lounge
Always make your offer conditional on the house being taken off the market. Assuming the seller agrees, make sure you check the listings have been updated to 'sold' the next day, and phone the estate agent to chase them up if (when) you find they haven't. Also do a regular RightMove search until you have exchanged, in case the seller advertises again via another agent - that happened to me when buying my current house, and a quick call to remind them (via the original agent) that the offer was subject to the house being off the market, had the desired effect. Sellers will be cheeky and try to get a higher offer if they can. But they are often more worried about losing the offer they already have, so your position is usually stronger than you might feel. (In fairness, buyers are often cheeky too - simultaneous offers on multiple properties, fully intending to cancel all but one. Just the rules of the game really.) -
The apolitical thread. Discuss anything but - Please.

I'd like to get some cheap conditioner and put it in a posh looking vessel. I have identified cheap coconut conditioner in Savers, which seems identical to the expensive equivalent. I just don't like the container. What's a good option? -
These online petitions are way too easy. 10 actual signatures won by shoe leather and freezing afternoons at a trestle table on the high street are worth 100 keyboard warriors. Let's start simple: petition to banish the infamous CCTV car. You've got the soup sorted; I'll bake some vegan brownies. Think I remember seeing a great recipe in the Guardian :)

Southwark camera car parked with engine idling (as usual)
peckham_ryu replied to kford's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
At risk of veering out of the ED topic zone, there's an event at Somerset House this weekend called Space to Breathe which looks interesting for finding out about combating city pollution: https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/space-breathe -
Nothing wrong with balance. Bonus points if you get into a public argument with the workman. Target to beat is probably Nailgate: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?30,1504218

Bad luck, it's a real pain. I've had one in the last year, my partner has had two. Pretty sure its just carelessly discarded nails rather than sabotage though. Mine was repairable, cheaply. My partner's was a replacement job, as it was near the edge. If yours is in the main tread area, hope it will be repairable this time.

Laptop squatters - the new Japanese knotweed?

I like this very polite notice I saw recently: http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn185/idiotboy77/BD17EE83-8658-4670-996A-80B8E4D2F1AC_zpsxavafjjv.jpg On the next table, a man wrapped up like an Arctic explorer, working on his laptop. (It was a bit chilly in there.) -

The mayor has issued a 'very high' pollution alert today, and asked drivers to avoid idling in stationary traffic. Whoever the CCTV car is catching, they need to be very naughty indeed to justify adding to today's winter haze. http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn185/idiotboy77/8B16E6DA-3727-4FF5-B319-D55ED79D9BD2_zpsyfanyrjv.jpg http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn185/idiotboy77/093A5A16-C02A-4684-8114-A42CD517509C_zps0hmef2ll.jpg -

A year on, I think the OP 'won' this thread. The main loser on the current layout is the motorist, stuck on Bellenden Road when vehicles are attempting to pass each other and the parked cars and vans. The changes don't improve the motorist's lot. Pedestrians are adequately catered for. You can't rely on right of way at some of the zebra crossings (especially at Warwick Gardens), but unfortunately that's the norm everywhere. I don't see my walk to/from the station improving in the changes. Cyclists have to be on the ball when changing lanes, and assertive in their road positioning, and thick-skinned when it comes to impatient motorists. I don't understand the drawing well enough to know how much the cycle lanes will improve life: cycle lanes inside parked cars sound to me like a recipe for passenger door collisions, and cycle lanes with parked cars on them are not really helpful. As rendelharris points out, the cycle lane takes a less safe line than an assertive cyclist. Some posters have said they are not confident on the existing route: I strongly the suspect that some proper training would be far more use to address this than the the physical changes proposed. Overall, I'd have been happier for the consulatation and highway budget to have been spent on something more beneficial. For example, a crackdown on careless driving in this area. All the main problems I see around Bellenden Road are from impatient and inconsiderate road users: overtaking and parking on the zig-zag lines; forcing progress past the parked cars; failing to stop at zebra crossings; driving too fast; cycling the wrong way in one-way sections. Just fine the buggers, and forget about fiddling around with paint on the road! Oh, and give cyclists some decent training :)

Rendering the cycle lane a complete pain when passing parked cars. Confusing drawing but ive never seen cycle lane inside patked cars, and doubt they would be introducing such a risky innovation here.
